SoCal UpNext Showcase MVPs

I had the privilege of directing the SoCal UpNext Showcase at Prime Volleyball Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, and this event was electric from start to finish. One of the most rewarding moments came when on-site coaches named their own MVPs, shining a spotlight on players who stood out not only for their talent but for the complete package they brought to the game.   These coaches weren't just watching highlight plays. They were tuned in to the intangibles that truly separate athletes: communication, coachability, hustle, and the way someone can lift up an entire court with their presence.   That is the same lens college coaches use when they scout. It is not just about who can jump the highest or swing the hardest. It is about who shows up with skill, effort, and character, creating a lasting impression every time they step on the floor.   What made this MVP selection so powerful was that each coach had the freedom to define excellence in their own way. For some, it was leadership and vocal energy. For others, it was resilience, relentless effort, or the ability to change the game without ever touching the ball. [player_tooltip player_id='773032' first='Blake' last='Perry'], an Outside Hitter and Middle from Woodcrest Christian Middle School, was selected by coaches Aleela Duncan and Darlene Staker as their MVP choice at the SoCal UpNext Showcase. They highlighted her versatility and praised the way she attacked with confidence, making smart shot selections and continuing to swing with determination even after mistakes. Blake's attention to cleaner passing and quicker defensive reads was evident, along with her ability to stay balanced, read hitters early, and direct her teammates through strong communication.   What sets Blake apart is her maturity and her eagerness to grow. She takes pride in being coachable and adaptable, always looking to use feedback as a way to raise her game. Her goals this season include improving her vertical, refining her passing, and becoming an even stronger defender, and the showcase gave her the chance to push those skills against top competition. Off the court, Blake enjoys drawing, playing piano, and reading Harry Potter, a glimpse into the creativity and balance she brings into everything she does. [player_tooltip player_id='851158' first='Mikayla' last='Cuevas'], a Defensive Specialist and Libero from Harvest Hill Steam Academy, was selected by coach Tshwjxeeb Vaaj for her aggressive play and constant leadership at the SoCal UpNext Showcase. He praised the way she led with her voice, followed instructions, and kept the gym energized with her positive presence. Mikayla's ability to compete with intensity while also showing discipline stood out, as she brought both effort and communication every time she stepped on the floor. Her background in beach volleyball had sharpened her endurance and stamina, helping her move quickly, stay versatile, and transfer those skills into her indoor game.   Mikayla was motivated by the challenge of raising her consistency as a passer and delivering quality touches to her setter. She saw the showcase as a chance to test herself against strong competition, get feedback from high-level coaches, and build the confidence needed to achieve her seasonal goals. What she wanted remembered most was her ability to lift up teammates while competing fiercely, showing that leadership is about energy and effort as much as it is about skill. [player_tooltip player_id='698064' first='Makala' last='Baker'], a Setter and Right Side from Day Creek Intermediate, was selected by coach Rachel Smith for her relentless energy and competitive drive at the SoCal UpNext Showcase. Rachel described her as a force on the court, bringing aggression and high-intensity play that elevated everyone around her. Whether running the offense, making a play, or motivating teammates, Makala showed that she could impact the game in more ways than one. Her jump setting stood out as she worked with tempo, sped up the offense, and delivered accurate balls to her hitters.   Makala approached the showcase eager to compete against strong talent while gaining insight from experienced coaches. Her personal goal for the season is to improve her ability to read opposing defenses and put her hitters in the best position to score, and she used this event as a chance to sharpen that skill. Beyond her on-court execution, she wanted others to see her as a great teammate, coachable and supportive, always helping those around her succeed. [player_tooltip player_id='768566' first='Seanoa' last='Te'o'], a Setter, Opposite, and Outside Hitter from Sapolu Destined Academy, was selected by scout coach Kantessa Bryant-Miller, who praised her as more than just a volleyball player, calling her a true athlete. Seanoa showed no hesitation in demanding the ball, attacking fearlessly at the net, and leaving her mark on every rally she played. Her leadership stood out as she encouraged teammates, kept the energy high, and showed a maturity that elevated those around her. The showcase proved that her presence on the floor is impossible to ignore and that her potential for the future is very bright.   Seanoa entered the event focused on becoming a stronger leader, lifting her teammates in tough moments, and staying consistent in her passion for the game. Her personal goal of improving one percent each day guided her mindset, and the showcase gave her the perfect stage to learn from new coaches, adapt to different teammates, and showcase her competitive fire. She wanted to be remembered for her passion and effort, qualities that defined her throughout the day. Off the court, Seanoa's fun side shines...she is the oldest of five siblings and sixteen grandchildren, and she loves to dance, even winning a best dancer award. [player_tooltip player_id='879482' first='Sophia' last='Kiely'], a Setter and Right Side from Notre Dame Academy, was selected by coach Mikayla Arimura, who called her the most dominant hitter of the day. Mikayla highlighted her hunger combined with humility, noting her complete all-around game and her willingness to step in wherever she was needed. Sophia impressed with her ability to attack from different types of sets, staying creative with her hitting choices while also showing she could deliver the same level of quality sets to highlight her teammates' strengths. Her balance of skill and selflessness made her one of the most impactful players on the court.   Sophia approached the showcase eager to test herself alongside other serious competitors, using the opportunity to build her confidence as a vocal leader. Her goal was to grow more comfortable directing the court, and she embraced the challenge of playing with new teammates while finding her voice. What stood out most was the way she combined mental toughness with enthusiasm, showing that her energy could be felt even in the quieter moments. Beyond volleyball, Sophia carries a spirit of adventure. She has already visited five of seven continents and has set her sights on visiting all 195 countries. [player_tooltip player_id='769075' first='Ioanah' last='Niko'], an Outside Hitter and Middle Blocker from Raymond Temple Elementary School, was selected by coach Corbin Tidwell, who praised her for always playing for her teammates and lifting them up. He described her as the type of MVP every team should want, a player who puts others first while competing with energy and focus. Ioanah worked hard to improve her timing as a hitter, sharpening her ability to read the set and connect cleanly with her setter. Her communication on the court showed that she was committed to being organized, intentional, and ready to elevate her teammates with every touch.   What stood out about Ioanah was her eagerness to connect with others and build lasting friendships through the game. She saw the showcase as an opportunity to not only test her skills but also to fellowship with players she normally competed against, recognizing that support and community make the journey stronger. Her personal goal this season is to become a more vocal communicator, and the showcase gave her the chance to grow in that area while realizing that many athletes share the same struggles and determination. She wants to be remembered as a young athlete working toward the best version of herself, and she left her mark with positivity and character. [player_tooltip player_id='780024' first='Kaeley' last='KJ Johnston'], a Setter from Talega Prep, was selected by coach Patrick Villanueva, who described her as a conqueress who controlled the court with presence and precision. He praised her ability to execute the smallest details with the same diligence she brought to the biggest moments, noting the physical quality she displayed that far exceeded her stature. At the showcase, KJ focused on being an aggressive setter in both the front and back row, using a quick jumpsetting release and high extensions to run an efficient, dynamic offense. She competed with confidence while also making it clear that her priority was putting her hitters in the best position to shine.   KJ entered the event with a mindset rooted in growth, explaining that pressure is a privilege because it signals untapped potential. She embraced the showcase like a tryout, arriving with positive energy and a determination to be the most supportive voice on the court. Her goal was to be remembered as a communicator who believed every touch deserved a conversation, and she achieved that by keeping her team connected and composed in every rally. Off the court, KJ brings a creative spirit. She was cast in youth theater productions as Ursula, Matilda, and Anna, and despite nerves and self-doubt, she delivered performances that audiences remembered for her stage presence. They highlighted her ability to communicate clearly, calling for the ball and using strong volleyball language that kept her teammates engaged and connected. What stood out most was her willingness to go after everything, showing determination on every rally and proving she was ready to take ownership of her role on the court.   Emma's energy and communication set her apart as the kind of player who raises the level of those around her. By combining effort with leadership, she created opportunities not only for herself but for her teammates, showing that she understands the complete game. Coaches took notice of how she balanced skill with maturity, proving that her ability to step up and take charge is just as valuable as any single highlight play.
