When Oak Grove and Hillsboro take the floor, you know it's going to be a night of energy, grit, and high-level volleyball. Tuesday's matchup in Oak Grove proved just that, as the Grovers took control from the very first serve and never looked back, sweeping Hillsboro in three commanding sets: 25-10, 25-17, 25-14.

The victory was more than just a season-opening statement. Oak Grove plays in one of the toughest regions in the state, with several programs ranked among the best in North Dakota. Every match is a grind, and every point has weight. Yet last night, the Grovers looked like a team already battle-tested for November. From pin-to-pin, back-row to the service line, Oak Grove executed with precision and showcased the kind of versatility that makes them a legitimate state contender again this year, even in a new division.

Oak Grove's Firepower

[player_tooltip player_id='724955' first='Calleigh' last='Weisgram'] – Middle Blocker

One of the most impactful players of the night was [player_tooltip player_id='724955' first='Calleigh' last='Weisgram'], who delivered an all-around clinic in middle blocking. Her ability to shut down Hillsboro's big hitters at the net was a difference-maker. Weisgram wasn't just putting up walls; she was reading the opposing hitters' shoulders, timing her jumps perfectly, and sealing the seams. More importantly, she turned blocks into transition opportunities—covering tips, swinging on quicks, and finding open space with smart placement. Her composure and volleyball IQ at the net kept Hillsboro constantly adjusting their attack lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id='723329' first='Alayna' last='Foster-DeVold'] – Outside Hitter

When Oak Grove needed a momentum swing, it was often Foster-DeVold's arm that delivered it. The outside hammered balls from both antennas, finding success whether she attacked cross-court into the deep corner or snapped sharp angles into the 10-foot line. Hillsboro threw blockers her way, but Foster-DeVold adjusted with roll shots and tips, forcing the defense to stay honest. Her presence on the pin was overwhelming at times, as she not only tallied kill after kill but also demanded constant attention, opening opportunities for her teammates. Simply put—she put on another show, proving why she's one of Oak Grove's most feared offensive weapons.

Molly Welsch – Right Side

Welsch was a steady two-way threat on the right pin. Offensively, she was aggressive, taking confident swings and tooling blockers, while defensively she held her ground against Hillsboro's outside hitters. Her block timing and ability to close seams with Weisgram in the middle shut down multiple Hillsboro runs before they could even get started. Welsch's presence as a blocker also shifted Hillsboro's hitting strategy, forcing them into shots they weren't comfortable taking.

[player_tooltip player_id='724977' first='Rachel' last='Christianson'] – Setter

At the heart of Oak Grove's success was Christianson, who ran a balanced offense with pace and creativity. She spread the ball with confidence, finding her middles in rhythm, giving her outsides clean looks, and keeping blockers guessing. Beyond her setting, she made her presence known at the service line. Christianson dialed up pressure with tough, consistent serves, creating scoring runs that broke open sets. She was also quick in transition, chasing down passes and making smart second-touch decisions to keep her offense flowing smoothly.

Addison Hunt – Middle/Right Side

Hunt's impact was felt most on the defensive side at the net. She provided Oak Grove with an edge, consistently matching up against Hillsboro's top attackers and turning rallies with her blocks. Her ability to press over the net and funnel attacks into Oak Grove's defenders was critical in neutralizing Hillsboro's attempts to regain momentum. Offensively, she chipped in timely swings, showing versatility in running both middle quicks and attacking from the right side.

[player_tooltip player_id='800289' first='Aspyn' last='Kjos'] – Defensive Specialist

Kjos anchored the back row with calmness and precision. Her platform was steady, and she displayed excellent court awareness, adjusting to serve angles and reading hitters' tendencies. With Hillsboro sending aggressive swings and off-speed shots her way, Kjos stayed composed, putting the ball on target and giving Christianson the chance to run the offense. Her volleyball IQ stood out—whether it was knowing when to step in for a teammate or anticipating a tip, she was always a step ahead.

Hillsboro's Resilient Fight

While the scoreboard tilted heavily toward Oak Grove, Hillsboro did not go down without showing fight and flashes of brilliance. The Burros are a program known for their toughness, and even in defeat, several players had standout moments that highlighted their skill and potential.

[player_tooltip player_id='724933' first='Aaliyah' last='Hjelmstad'] – Libero

Hjelmstad was the glue for Hillsboro, working tirelessly to cover seams and keep her team in system. Oak Grove's aggressive serving and high-powered swings put her under constant pressure, yet she battled, making multiple diving saves and cleaning up out-of-system plays. Her willingness to sacrifice her body and cover deep balls allowed Hillsboro to extend rallies.

[player_tooltip player_id='724935' first='Malia' last='Bryl'] – Outside Hitter

Bryl brought energy to the left pin, taking fearless swings against Oak Grove's block. While Oak Grove's defense made scoring difficult, Bryl mixed in shots to all zones, proving she can adjust her attack based on what the defense gives her. Her effort to swing through tough situations gave Hillsboro important points and showed her potential to be a reliable six-rotation player moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='724934' first='Abigail' last='Anderson'] – Outside Hitter

Anderson was another bright spot, showcasing her athleticism with strong approaches and powerful swings. She tested Oak Grove's defense with deep drives into the corners and occasional back-row attacks. Anderson's offensive presence forced Oak Grove's block to stay honest, and her hustle in coverage helped Hillsboro stay competitive in rallies.

Paityn Olson – Net Presence

Olson did her part at the net, contesting Oak Grove's big hitters and contributing with offensive touches of her own. She was particularly effective in forcing Oak Grove's attackers to think twice before swinging away. Olson's blocking, though challenged by Oak Grove's fast-paced offense, showed promise in slowing down attacks and redirecting balls back into play.

Elisa Jennen – Setter

Perhaps the hardest-working player on the court for Hillsboro, Jennen was everywhere. She hustled into tight passes, chased down shanked balls, and did her best to keep her offense organized against relentless Oak Grove pressure. Her ability to get the ball to her hitters, even when out of system, demonstrated both grit and leadership. Jennen's court presence and refusal to quit were inspiring for her teammates.

The Bigger Picture

Oak Grove's straight-set win wasn't just about dominance; it was about setting the tone for the season. Playing in a loaded region, they know that consistency and depth will be key. Last night, they proved they have both. With Weisgram and Hunt controlling the middle, Foster-DeVold hammering from the pin, Welsch contributing on the right, and Christianson orchestrating it all, the Grovers showcased a balanced lineup that can attack from anywhere. Add in the steady defense from Kjos and others, and Oak Grove looks primed for another postseason run.

For Hillsboro, while the result stings, there are positives to take away. They showed grit, fight, and flashes of brilliance from players like Bryl, Anderson, and Jennen. With Hjelmstad anchoring the back row and Olson patrolling the net, the Burros have the tools to improve as the season progresses. Playing against a powerhouse like Oak Grove so early only sharpens them for the battles ahead.

Final Thoughts

The atmosphere in Oak Grove last night felt more like midseason volleyball than the early weeks. With strong serving runs, explosive swings, and relentless defense, Oak Grove controlled the match from start to finish. Hillsboro, though outmatched, showcased the heart and determination that will carry them through their season.

Final Score: Oak Grove def. Hillsboro (25-10, 25-17, 25-14)

Both teams walked away with lessons, but for Oak Grove, it was a loud statement: this group is ready to chase another state tournament berth, and possibly more.
