If one has gone to a game involving the Scott Eagles this fall, they've noticed not just two of the Grigsby triplets on the floor at the same time, but all three. [player_tooltip player_id='500587' first='Ryann' last='Grigsby'] has been the starting setter for three seasons and [player_tooltip player_id='604595' first='Payton' last='Grigsby'] has contributed on defense and on the outside all three seasons. [player_tooltip player_id='795190' first='KaLeigh' last='Grigsby'] saw limited varsity action the last two years, but has contributed on defense this season.

Ryann and Payton helped the Eagles (26-11 overall) drive to the state semifinals as juniors last year. The three hope to help the Eagles repeat as 10th Region champions starting Tuesday in the quarterfinals at George Rogers Clark at 6 p.m. against Harrison County. The three talked about growing up with each other among other things.

Growing up Playing with Each Other

Ryann: The biggest joy of growing up playing with my sisters is being able to make memories. And being proud of the players they have become.

Payton: The biggest joy is that we have grown together as people and as players. We are doing something we love together.

KaLeigh: My favorite part about growing playing with my sisters is that there is always someone to talk to and I am never alone. There is also always someone to help.

Playing for the Scott Eagles

Ryann: Some enjoyable aspects of playing for the Scott Eagles is the environment and the people surrounded by them.

Payton: Playing with these girls has been the most enjoyable aspect. Everyone has such a close bond and it helps us as players knowing we all have trust in each other.

KaLeigh: Some of the enjoyable aspects of playing for the Scott eagles volleyball team is how easily everyone gets a long and the celebrations. It is so easy to talk to everyone and everybody is willing to help.

Pregame Superstitions

Ryann: My pregame superstitions is I always pray during the national anthem.

Payton: I always have to put my left sock on first. I have to always hand my mom my necklace before games, and wear a certain sweatshirt and slippers on championship game days.

KaLeigh: My only pregame superstition is that I have to have my hair a certain way.

Handling the ebbs and flows of a volleyball game

Ryann: How I handle the highs and lows is I always tell myself next ball mentality no matter what if we are up if we are down.

Payton: I always take a minute in between points to breathe and clear my mind.

KaLeigh: I feel like the highs in games is a celebration then reset to lock in for the next point and the lows I tell myself everything is going to be fine and have the help of my teammates to help me up.

How playing for the [program_tooltip program_id='430241' first='Northern' last='Kentucky Junior Volleyball'] Club has helped on the varsity level

Ryann: NKJV has helped improve my speed by keeping the ball in my hands, keeping me active and maintaining my tempo with my sets making it faster while the tempo in Northern Kentucky is getting faster every year.

Payton: It has helped me practice my control and tempo that we know.

Improvements as a setter

Ryann: The key has been my coach Andrea Sullivan always pushing me to be better then I was yesterday. She always says, 'Be one percent better than how you were yesterday.' I've taken that with me through the four years I have been in the program.

Connection with Ryann as setter as a hitter

Payton: It has helped me as a hitter because I can communicate with her and tell her what I need changed and she can give me feedback as well.

Contributing more as a senior

KaLeigh: I focus on what I can do and I don't dwell on the mistakes like I used to. I believe that I have grown as a person and a player. The connections I have made on this team this year have also helped me significantly.

Scott head coach Andrea Sullivan said Ryann is a great setter who continues to work on her craft. Sullivan credits Ryann for running a quick tempo offense and being a great server. Grigsby is a sound passer and mixes in setovers and setter dumps well throwing opponents off-guard. Before the season, Sullivan said she wanted Grigsby to work on putting up solid blocks in the front row and Grigsby has delivered. Grigsby has 29 assisted and one solo block on the season to go with 968 assists, 55 kills, 253 digs and 42 aces.

Sullivan said Payton is a great defender, reads opponents well and makes adjustments when needed. Before the season, Sullivan said she wants her to work on being more of a vocal leader on the court and that's shown on the court. Grigsby does a good job drawing blockers off teammates and makes sound passes. Grigsby has 193 kills, 395 digs and a team-high 55 aces on the season.

KaLeigh has been productive along side of her sisters this season. Sullivan credits her for developing a great float serve. Sullivan said Grigsby can come in and serve, play defense or back up Ryann as a setter if needed. Before the season, Sullivan said she wants Grigsby to work on her consistency and confidence. Grigsby has done that to help the Eagles. Grigsby has 153 digs and 35 aces on the season for Scott.

Note from Mom and Stepdad

The most enjoyable part of watching them grow up playing volleyball has been seeing their passion for the game. It's a love-hate relationship at times. Their competitiveness and willingness to push each other - not just to be better than one another in that sibling rivalry kind of way, but also to help each other improve - has been incredible to watch. Even when they struggled or things didn't go their way, they threw in the towel. They kept pushing themselves, always their own toughest critics. Through it all, their passion and love for the game always prevailed. At the end of the day, they overcame every challenge they faced. They're always willing to teach - not just each other, but anyone who asks for help or guidance.

They've absorbed knowledge passed down from me, their coaches and teammates - with all three of them on varsity court at the same time - is a true testament to their determination and drive to achieve what they want and desire. The friendships they've gained along the way have been amazing, but most of all, it's been a joy just watching them grow and develop. - Mom and Stepdad (Amanda and Brian Williams)
