Club Team Preview: Boss CLE 17 Black

Their 17 Black national-level team is one that will likely compete with a lot of purpose over the next several months as several members of this team recently fulfilled a reserve role for some good high school programs in the greater Cleveland region of Ohio. Included on this [program_tooltip program_id='431711' first='Boss' last='CLE'] 17 Black roster is a 2028 DS/L prospect in Taylor James and a 2029 setter in Nicole Barney, who will undoubtedly get a lot of great experience playing against some strong veteran teams at this level. This group will take on teams at some of the best Ohio events and other larger competitions outside the area. Here are five athletes to get a look at in the coming month, including a trio of core attackers that bring good pin versatility.    Stanik will certainly be a primary arm for this team as she makes the move to compete for [program_tooltip program_id='431711' first='Boss' last='CLE'] this club round. She has a fundamentally sound arm that she can control for range and to bring some aggressive pace. With a more prominent double-arm lift she can add to her elevation and balance in the air, which will increase her point scoring impact. She complements her offense around the court well with good all-around skills to make plays in other areas.     Heuser showed some big moments of offensive success for Midview this past high school season. When she is on time with approach momentum and lift, she can swing with a high elbow and good authority. She's also a savvy attacker in that she can control her contact to find space with off speed options. Look for her to get a lot of opportunities to swing this club season.     Heavey was one of Rocky River's top offensive options in 2025 as she terminated 1.7 k/s. Her arm is effective from both sides of the court and will help comprise a corps of offensive options that should provide some balance in their point scoring effort. She can swing with good control to challenge the defense or find space through the block and around the edges.     Hanratty brings the best length to the team at 6'2 and in the middle phase of the game. She played in a reserved role for Avon Lake this past fall season but saw good action with this club team a season ago, which should pay dividends in her skill advances and confidence to take the floor with a big role between the pins on both sides of the ball.     At 5'7, Russell is not afraid to take big swings against taller defenders in front of her. She moves well through her approach work and elevates well to swing aggressively. She is a confident competitor that brings good energy to her team. For Steele, she was part of their core offense adding nearly two kills per set through a .201 efficiency. She led the Comets in aces while also finishing among team leaders with 183 total digs.     Baughman is an aggressive attacker with good awareness and instincts to swing with purpose. At nearly two kills per set this past fall high school season for Avon Lake, she will be their top returning offensive contributor next season due to graduation. Taking ample swings on the right side, she also can score with touch and finesse.
