Instagram can be your resume and help you gain exposure, but it will not stand on its own. College coaches may be scrolling to be entertained, but they are also evaluating, especially when it comes to learning more about your character. A coach's primary recruiting evaluation still happens on the court. From there, they look in their email inbox, review your recruiting profile, and often take a pass through your social media. Your Instagram account is frequently the first snapshot of who you are as an athlete, how you prepare, and how seriously you approach your development. When built correctly, it becomes a living resume that works for you around the clock, sharing your game, your mindset, and your consistency long before you ever step on a court in front of a coach.

Start With a Strong Bio

Before a coach ever presses play, they read your bio.

Your Instagram bio is the header of your resume. It should immediately answer the questions a college coach, recruiter, or evaluator is asking in under five seconds.

A strong athlete bio includes:

This is not the place for inside jokes, emojis with no context, or quotes that say nothing about you as an athlete. Your bio should say, clearly and confidently, this is who I am and this is the level I'm working toward.

Once that foundation is set, your content becomes the proof.

Think of Instagram as Sections of a Resume

Every type of post you share serves a purpose. When used intentionally, your feed shows coaches how you compete, how you prepare, how you think, and how you carry yourself.

Here is how to build your IG resume using content that actually matters.

Single Posts: Your Resume Bullet Points

Single posts are your clean, professional statements. These are easy for coaches to scan and easy for you to control.

Use them for:

Game day photos that show presence and confidence

Highlights that demonstrate decision making, not just power

Practice photos that show work ethic

Game schedules so coaches know where to find you (Pin Box 1)

Team photos that show you value the group

Study tips or academic moments that reflect balance

Behind the scenes moments that show commitment

These posts tell coaches you take your role seriously and understand that volleyball is more than one swing.

Reels: Your Game Film With Context

Reels are where coaches see movement, timing, effort, and instincts.

The most effective reels show:

Training or behind the scenes reps

Game highlights with full plays, not just the finish

A day in the life that shows structure and discipline

Study sessions that reinforce accountability

Pre game routines that show preparation

Game recaps that show reflection

Practice drills that show coachability

Fitness clips that show durability and intent

Reels do not need to be viral. They need to be honest. Coaches are watching how you move between plays, how you transition, and how you respond under pressure.

Carousels: How You Think About the Game

Carousels are one of the most underused tools for athletes.

They allow you to show depth.

Meet the team posts that show leadership and connection

Stories: Your Real Time Personality

Stories are your daily interactions. They do not need to be perfect, but they should still be intentional.

Use stories for:

Game day updates

Polls that engage your community

Athlete Q and A moments

Matchday routines

Countdown posts before events

Short highlight clips

Asking thoughtful questions

Stories show consistency. Coaches notice athletes who show up regularly, not just when something big happens.

Final Thought: Be Intentional, Not Impressive

You do not need to post everything.
You need to post with purpose.

Your Instagram should tell a clear story:

Who you are

How you prepare

How you compete

How you think

How you show up as a teammate

When used correctly, Instagram becomes more than social media. It becomes a living resume that works for you even when you are not in the gym.
