This group had unfinished business in Minneapolis.

When we covered last year's Northern Lights Qualifier, VCNebraska 15 Black generated plenty of storylines with a perfect run through pool play. Unfortunately, the team came up short of a bid in the single-elimination bracket. 15 Black thrived in the spotlight, but USAV qualifiers can be unforgiving on Championship Sunday.

2026 would etch a narrative that felt new and familiar. VCNebraska 16 Black watched their counterparts from 17 Elite and 16 Elite lock up NLQ bids at the event's first two weekends. So, naturally, 16 Black would look for the club trifecta at Minneapolis's third and final weekend.

Which perspective provided more motivation? Was it last year's near miss, or VCN's prior 2026 success at NLQ? We can't know for sure, but the results speak for themselves. 16 Black got its Minneapolis breakthrough.

Our next entry to the Nebraska Bid Tracker brings us back to Minneapolis. The VCNebraska takeover is complete.

Sunday's Sustained Success

As we alluded to in the intro, last year's VCNebraska 15 Black group roared to an unblemished record in pool play. 2026 gave us a Minneapolis reprise for 16 Black.

Early pool play served as a reminder of 16 Black's sky-high NLQ ceiling. VCNebraska tabbed three sweeps over IA Juniors, Crossfire, and OVA to start its journey in the 16 Liberty division.

Saturday's storyline remained the same. Despite facing stiffer competition in Round 2, 16 Black did not surrender a set after the re-seed.

So, here we were again. Just like 2025, 16 Black was 6-0 heading into Championship Sunday. A maximum of three bids were available in 16 Liberty, and VCNebraska was determined not to miss out.

However, despite the first two days of dominance, 16 Black did not receive the privilege of a first-round bye in the final Gold bracket. This left the team two wins away from reaching the semifinals and assuring a bid with a third-place finish.

No problem. 16 Black extended its sweep streak to seven with an early-morning win over VC United. However, adversity finally surfaced with TK 16 Mavericks Elite claiming the opening set of Sunday's quarterfinal.

This left VCNebraska with its first 0-1 deficit in the final obstacle to a bid. Fortunately, this pressure brought out the best in 16 Black.

VCNebraska rebounded in Set 2 and won a 15-11 tiebreaker to lock up a bid. The team's podium placement completed the VCNebraska trifecta in Minneapolis and strengthened the club's foothold in Indianapolis this summer.

We're well acquainted with what makes VCNebraska teams successful. A combination of offensive balance and quality ball control tells the story.

Let's start in the back row. 16 Black's defensive corps is stacked with familiar faces, along with a few emerging assets along the end line. [player_tooltip player_id='625558' first='Eva' last='Gutz'] returns from last year's squad to anchor the libero jersey. This 2028 prospect flourished in the contrasting jersey with Lincoln East last fall, laying the foundation for her continued excellence with 16 Black.

Gutz is joined by fellow 2028 standouts [player_tooltip player_id='730560' first='Norah' last='Beran'] and Brianna Hull, both of whom have meshed perfectly into 16 Black's backcourt operation. This crew can slot into any spot in the back row. Beran has been particularly impressive in the middle-back area while adjusting to a new club in 2026.

Of course, 16 Black's defensive specialists aren't the only ones contributing to the ball control effort. [player_tooltip player_id='774609' first='Alexis' last='Valish'] is another key name in this area. This is one of the most versatile athletes on the roster, as she can command either pin position in addition to her defensive prowess. We watch Valish take some clutch swings on the right side at NLQ, adding new layers to her scouting report.

Any of 16 Black's outside hitters can play around the dial. [player_tooltip player_id='774612' first='Braylyn' last='Wood'] and [player_tooltip player_id='774602' first='Claire' last='Holle'] form a wicked left-side tandem around the dial. Both will readily transition from pass to attack as frontcourt attackers. Wood's quick transition footwork was a highlight of our NLQ coverage last year, and nothing has changed in 2026. She has only reached higher.

Crete junior [player_tooltip player_id='877321' first='Kylie' last='McMillan'] adds to VCN's ever-expanding pin depth. This multi-sport athlete has already made her mark with the Cardinals, and her contributions on the club side are equally impressive. VCNebraska usually has its share of small-town stars on its top rosters, and McMillan carries that banner well.

The pin conversation continues with Meredith Masters carving out a major role at the opposite position. 16 Black favored a two-setter offense throughout NLQ, allowing Masters and Valish to deliver constant firepower behind the setter. Masters's cross-court shot was a game-changer in Minneapolis.

Let's credit those setters. [player_tooltip player_id='571950' first='Adeline' last='Hunnicutt'] and [player_tooltip player_id='774611' first='Lindyn' last='Stutzman'] provide seamless transitions between one end of the 6-2 and the other. Hunnicutt has instantly established iron-clad connections with her new teammates, and Stutzman's continuity has been invaluable. 16 Black made the right moves at this position.

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about the middles. This is where [player_tooltip player_id='738511' first='Anna' last='Bauer'] and Rosie Franz run the show. Bauer, a Class of 2029 prospect from Grand Island Northwest, has been on our radar for a while after multiple appearances on the Prep Dig Circuit. But we're quickly growing familiar with Franz's balanced, well-rounded game along the net.

And there's that word again. Balance. 16 Black brought that VCN brand up north, as several of the club's other teams did, too. Keep that storyline in mind for Indianapolis.
