Lightning strikes twice in Philadelphia.

Here we are again. Just over a week ago, we discussed [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy's long-awaited Open triumph at Philly's Northeast Qualifier. NEQ is an unorthodox stop for Great Plains Region competitors, but 17 Synergy proved that Nebraska teams can take high-quality volleyball to the East Coast. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black must have discovered the same roadmap.

NEQ's second weekend brought the 17 USA division into the spotlight, and [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black carried the banner for the entire Great Plains Region. This group came close to a USA triumph at last year's Show Me Qualifier, so we knew the kind of ceiling this Lincoln-area squad could bring. NEQ raised that ceiling a little higher.

We're running it back in Philly.

Pursuing Perfection

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black looked like a team competing for more than a 17 USA bid. This group was out to make a statement, even while far away from home.

The team's Philadelphia stay began with a 3-0 run through Friday's pools. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] did not drop a set in the effort and quickly cemented its foothold in the crowded USA race.

Good times rolled into Saturday. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] was finally pushed to a third set by Elite 17 National, but the Great Plains squad got the job done with a 15-10 win in the tiebreaker. Two more emphatic sweeps over MADFROG and SMASH completed the round-robin hot streak.

Even with pressure mounting for Sunday's single-elimination Gold bracket, [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] remained at peak form. 17 Black had its eyes on a semifinal appearance to snag one of the four possible bids available at NEQ. An early-morning sweep over Houston Stellar brought the team one step closer.

One more Texas team stood in the way. Sunday's quarterfinal foe was TAV 17 Blue, and these two squads produced a thriller. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] pounced in Set 1, but TAV answered with a narrow 29-27 triumph in the second stanza. A race to 15 would decide a bid.

17 Black would not relinquish its goose egg in the loss column. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] pulled away to a 15-10 win and locked up a spot on the final NEQ podium. This placed yet another Philadelphia bid in the [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] column, putting the Great Plains Region in front of a national audience.

The barnstorming tour has expanded.

New and Familiar

Kroll

17 Black's 2026 lineup is a medley of returning stars and new additions. These combinations have clearly panned out.

Let's start with the cast of veterans providing 17 Black's all-important continuity. It all starts with [player_tooltip player_id='458146' first='Alex' last='Kroll'], the Lincoln North Star junior who has transformed the setter scene in Nebraska's capital city. Last year's state tournament breakthrough with the Navigators was impressive enough, but Kroll's leadership and distribution have set a new standard for [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']. She can connect with whichever hitters are patrolling the front row.

Of course, it helps to have some familiar faces on the 17 Black roster. Fellow Navigator standout [player_tooltip player_id='807924' first='Elsie' last='Schmidt'] has elevated her game on the left side after excelling on the Class A stage in 2025. She set the pace for last year's [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] crew and has added an impressive six-rotation repertoire to her scouting report.

We might as well extend the North Star conversation with [player_tooltip player_id='774919' first='Marie' last='Paneitz'] in the back row. This 2028 prospect has stonewalled some elite opposing attackers throughout her career, whether it's on the prep side or the club circuit. Paneitz carries a variable DS role with 17 Black, allowing her to prove herself in any zone across the end line.

Paneitz has an impressive backcourt supporting cast with 17 Black, too. Waverly High School stars [player_tooltip player_id='575157' first='Ansley' last='Real'] and [player_tooltip player_id='521256' first='Emmalyn' last='Quinn'] have stepped into the lineup and bolstered 17 Black's serve-receive pattern. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s in-system opportunities have escalated with Real and Quinn in the back row, giving Kroll everything she needs to operate the offense.

Timmons

Did you think we were done with Lincoln North Star? Of course, we're not. The Navigator contingent expands to four with [player_tooltip player_id='521263' first='Ashlyn' last='Jensen'] adding extraordinary depth and versatility in the front row. She has experience on both pins with [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] and is a key part of 17 Black's new-look rotation. Stocks are rising for this under-the-radar 2027 athlete.

We can venture over to Lincoln Southeast to find another wicked net tandem. [player_tooltip player_id='521271' first='Emery' last='Williams'] and [player_tooltip player_id='773370' first='Blaine' last='Franklin'] create a formidable wall when blocking on the right and middle, respectively. 17 Black is also not afraid to leverage this pair of Knights in transition situations. The NEQ trip was a huge outing for LSE's hard-hitting stars.

Finally, we venture outside the Star City to address our final pair of front-row terminators. Fairbury outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='365054' first='Evelyn' last='Timmons'] has always been a can't-miss athlete in the [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] gym, but she had primarily been playing up a year during her club career. That changed in 2026, unleashing Timmons as a focal point of the 17 Black attack. Her effortless elevation on the left side was the perfect catalyst to [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE']'s repeat effort at NEQ.

The same can be said of [player_tooltip player_id='521297' first='Reagan' last='Rinne'], a dynamic junior hitter fresh off a state title with Freeman High School. Rinne can anchor the middle or the right while being equally efficient in both roles. Her prowess as a show-stopping middle blocker took precedence at NEQ, but Rinne will keep developing throughout the year.

That development continues in preparation for GJNC. [program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] will be well represented.

Bid Tracker

18 Open

Premier Nebraska 18 Gold - KC MLK

17 Open

[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 17 Elite - NLQ

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy - NEQ

17 USA

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Black - NEQ

16 Open

Premier Nebraska 16 Gold - MEQ

16 USA

VCNebraska 16 Elite - NLQ

15 Open

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold - MEQ
