Prairie State AM Highlights

<p>The atmosphere in Illinois was electric as the Prep Dig Prairie State Showdown kicked off its AM wave Saturday. With about 10 courts in action between 2 venues, the opening sets provided a clinic in defensive tenacity, high-IQ setting, and Midwest grit. Scouting virtually allows for a bird's-eye view of the momentum shifts, and several teams have already distanced themselves as the ones to beat heading into Sunday.</p>   <p>Here are some standout performers and matches that I caught this morning.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">17/18s: DuPage Elite Edges Ultimate in a Three-Set Thriller</h2>   <p>The toughest 1v2 pool play match of the 17 Open division saw DuPage Elite 17 United take on Ultimate 17 Gold in a battle. DuPage Elite controlled the opening set with a dominant 25–10 win, but Ultimate responded with a resilient 26–24 victory in the second to force a decider. DuPage took the third set 15-10, but here are some standouts from that match. </p>   <p>The Ultimate libero had a wicked serve and put pressure on DuPage. Alyson Hedrich had a swag about her that visibly showed confidence, and it forced an opponent timeout during a critical third-set run. For Chicago Elite keep an eye on [player_tooltip player_id='966991' first='Evelyn' last='Shehorn'], who ripped a couple of swings while I was watching, and Avery Tercek, whose ability to read attackers from the back row kept them in extended rallies.</p>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/04/RG1A3691_0a45e6.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-967063" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">[player_tooltip player_id='966991' first='Evelyn' last='Shehorn'] - photo by Chris Fitzgerald</figcaption></figure>   <p>Iowa Select's Addison Tharp knew how to be deceptive and trick blockers to give them better opportunities to put the ball away. Her setting was quite exceptional, and she was making really smart decisions, even in an out-of-system situation. Isabella McMeekan was a force at the net, most notably building a roof over her opponent. She does a great job staying active as a scoring threat in the middle. Taylor Camarena's low, flat, wicked serve and it provided to be a nightmare for Chicago Elite's serve receive.</p>   <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/04/RG1A3647.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-967064" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Taylor Camarena - photo by Chris Fitzgerakd</figcaption></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">16s: Shock 16 UA and Mindset Premier Battle for Tempo</h2>   <p>The 16s division featured a tactical clash between Shock 16 UA Shock and Mindset Premier 16 Red. Shock took the opening set 25–18, relying on a fast-paced offense and aggressive middle routes.</p>   <ul class="wp-block-list"></ul>    <p class="text-gray-700">Dennis displayed one of the fastest arm swings of the morning. Her body language demanded the ball in transition, and she was able to work through the block with ease.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">I started out praising Boensel for her defensive grit. She sacrificed her body over and over again to keep plays alive and knew how to reset the offense immediately.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Hermann impressed me with her persistence in moving the ball around to involve all hitters, even when the offense faced heavy pressure from a looming block and gritty defense.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Di Benedetto proved to be a slide specialist who powered through the block multiple times to keep the second set competitive.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Extras!</h2>   <p>Impulse 18 Red took an early lead in their battle against Lions Starved Rock. They were anchored by their Libero, Kendyl Neukomm, who showcased elite court coverage and great pursuit in every play. In the 14s division, Stars 14 Blue's Ella Nelson was a standout, providing consistent pressure at the service line and demonstrating high-level floor leadership for a young squad.</p>   <p>As the AM wave concluded, the level of play suggests that the Prairie State Showdown gold brackets will be a dogfight. We'll be watching closely as teams battle it out.</p>   <p></p>
