High School Preview: Northwestern Building Off a State Run

The loss to Bennett County at state still fuels this group, and the work happening over the summer already feels focused on taking another step forward this fall.

What makes Northwestern dangerous heading into the season is the balance throughout the roster. The senior class brings leadership and experience, while younger athletes are already proving they are ready for bigger moments. This does not feel like a team rebuilding. It feels like a team reloading with athletes who understand what it takes to compete late into the postseason.

The biggest thing this group brings into the season is composure. They do not look rushed when rallies become chaotic, and multiple athletes understand how to impact matches outside of just scoring. The setters control tempo, the middles continue applying pressure at the net, and the back row does the little things that keep the offense flowing.

Expect Northwestern to enter the fall with confidence, chemistry, and a roster capable of making another deep run.

Brenna Halvorson may still be young, but she already shows confidence running the offense. She stays calm during broken plays and continues looking for ways to create offense instead of simply pushing free balls over.

What grabbed my attention is how willing she is to trust her decisions. Younger setters sometimes hesitate once matches speed up. Brenna keeps competing aggressively and looks comfortable leading the offense.

[player_tooltip player_id='799347' first='Tara' last='Blachford'] brings steadiness to the back row and gives Northwestern a player they can trust during pressure moments. She stays balanced in serve receive, handles pace well, and works hard to keep first contact under control.

Defensively, she does a great job reading hitters before contact happens. Players like Tara become incredibly valuable late in the season because they help settle the floor when momentum starts shifting.

Breelyn Satter continues giving Northwestern a strong physical presence at the net. She moves well laterally, competes hard as a blocker, and stays aggressive offensively during transition play.

One thing that stands out is the energy she brings point after point. Middles who continue pressuring offenses deep into rallies wear teams down over the course of a match. That competitive edge matters.

Elexis Kramp already looks advanced offensively because she understands how to create points without forcing difficult swings. She sees the court well, adjusts during rallies, and continues making smarter attacking decisions.

You can also see the confidence building in her game. As she gains more varsity experience, expect her role offensively to continue growing.

[player_tooltip player_id='578407' first='Lila' last='Johnson'] looks like one of the biggest players to watch for Northwestern this season because of how versatile and dangerous she can be. She controls tempo well, communicates constantly with hitters, and understands how to keep defenses guessing instead of becoming predictable.

What makes her difficult to prepare for is the way she impacts multiple areas of the game. She brings leadership, composure, and the ability to change momentum quickly with smart decision making. Northwestern is going to lean heavily on her experience this season.

Sophia Troske brings toughness to the defensive side of the court and competes hard every rally. She works to extend plays that many defenders give up on and continues fighting for points long after rallies get scrappy.

Her platform discipline also stands out. Even against tougher servers, she stays controlled and works hard to keep the offense in system.

Kylee Henjum looks like a player who could quickly become a go-to piece for Northwestern this season. She attacks aggressively, competes physically at the net, and continues working hard through transition instead of disappearing during longer rallies.

What really stands out is her motor. She keeps applying pressure offensively and defensively, and you can feel the confidence growing in her game. The upside here is extremely intriguing heading into the season.

Chesnie Heim brings experience and emotional steadiness to the right side position. She competes confidently offensively and never looks rattled when matches become tight.

That consistency becomes huge during long stretches of the season. Players who stay emotionally level help younger teams stay composed during difficult moments.

[player_tooltip player_id='932687' first='Faith' last='VanHatten'] gives Northwestern another setter capable of controlling rhythm offensively. She stays composed under pressure and works hard to distribute the ball effectively throughout matches.

I also like how engaged she stays with hitters during rallies. She communicates constantly and continues adjusting offensively as matches evolve.

Lilly Haven continues developing into a middle who can impact both sides of the ball. She transitions quickly offensively and keeps working to stay available during longer rallies.

Defensively, she is beginning to understand how to take away angles at the net instead of reacting late to swings. That growth should continue making her an important piece for this roster.

Taylor Vetter enters the season as one of the most complete players on the roster. She contributes heavily in serve receive, competes defensively, and continues finding ways to score without forcing low-percentage swings.

You can trust her in multiple phases of the match, and those athletes become incredibly valuable during postseason volleyball. Her leadership and ability to stay composed during pressure moments should make a major impact this season.

Northwestern enters the summer with expectations after last year's state finish, but this group looks prepared for that challenge. The senior leadership gives the team stability, while younger athletes continue bringing energy and growth into larger roles.

The biggest thing this roster brings into the upcoming season is hunger. After falling short of a state title, Northwestern looks motivated to keep building, keep competing, and put themselves back in position for another deep postseason run.~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

In Case You Missed It
