Kills often steal the spotlight.

However, some of the most important plays in volleyball never show up in the highlight reel. One of those plays is the block touch.

A block touch may not always result in an immediate point. Still, it can completely change the outcome of a rally. Instead of allowing the ball to hit the floor, a blocker can slow down an attack, redirect the ball, or force it higher into the air. As a result, defenders have more time to react and make a play.

Those extra touches matter.

In fact, block touches often create momentum. They allow teams to transition into offense and can frustrate opposing hitters throughout a match. Additionally, they help neutralize players who carry a large portion of their team's offense.

When a defense starts generating block touches, rallies become longer and opportunities begin to appear.

Why Block Touches Matter

Not every swing can be stuffed straight down.

Sometimes the best block is simply getting a hand on the ball. A small touch can disrupt timing, change angles, and give the defense a chance to reset.

Furthermore, block touches help teams stay connected. Defenders can read around a block more effectively when they trust their front row to take away space and create deflections.

The best defensive teams understand this.

They celebrate touches just as much as they celebrate blocks because they know those plays often lead to points a few contacts later.

During the high school season, Brynley Warta made a tremendous impact at the net through her ability to seal blocks and close space effectively. She consistently pressed over the net and forced hitters to adjust their swings. As a result, she generated countless block touches that allowed her defense to stay involved in rallies. Even when she wasn't recording a block, her presence created opportunities for teammates and helped swing momentum in her team's favor.

Raeana Gibbs proved to be a difference-maker at the net throughout the high school season. She did an excellent job closing seams and taking away attacking angles from opposing hitters. Additionally, her timing allowed her to create valuable block touches that extended rallies and gave her defense opportunities to work. Whether it was a huge stuff block or a subtle touch that kept the ball alive, Gibbs consistently found ways to impact points before they ever reached the back row.

Looking Ahead

Blocking isn't always about recording the final touch.

Sometimes the most valuable play is the one that gives your teammates a chance to make the next one.

As the game continues to get faster and offenses become more dynamic, block touches will remain one of the most underrated aspects of volleyball defense. They create opportunities, build momentum, and help teams stay connected throughout a match.

The next time you watch a rally unfold, don't just look for the big block.

Watch for the block touch that started everything.
