Hitters are often judged by the swings college coaches remember.

The kill that ends a rally. The big block. The highlight that shows up on social media.

But becoming a complete hitter involves much more than scoring points.

It requires learning how to adjust to different setters, recognize what the block is giving you, make smart decisions when the play breaks down, and continue competing when things are not perfect.

At a recent college camp, these 2029 hitters were challenged to do exactly that. They stepped into unfamiliar environments, worked with new teammates, received instruction from college coaches, and competed in situations that required them to think, adjust, and communicate at a higher level.

As the 2029 class continues to develop, many athletes are beginning to gain a clearer understanding of who they are on the court. Some are learning how to score in new ways. Others are building confidence as six-rotation players, improving their volleyball IQ, or discovering how communication and leadership can impact a match just as much as a kill.

The athletes featured below are all at different stages of their volleyball journey, but they share something important in common. They are becoming more intentional about how they impact the game and developing a stronger understanding of the role they play within their teams.

This Prospect Check-In offers a look at where they are today, what they learned from the college camp experience, and the areas of their game they continue working to refine as they prepare for the opportunities ahead.

Sienna Cicero knew she would not have unlimited opportunities to make an impression.

With athletes from different clubs, age groups, and backgrounds sharing the court, every touch carried a little more importance. Rather than focusing on statistics or highlight plays, Sienna focused on something she could control every rep: communication.

She felt her competitiveness and willingness to stay positive helped her perform well throughout a recent college camp. More importantly, she recognized that creating energy for teammates was especially valuable in an environment where many athletes had never played together before.

One of her favorite moments came during a demonstration that pushed her outside her comfort zone. Athletes were asked to either option the second ball or take an approach jump set to a pin hitter, neither of which she felt particularly confident doing. Instead of backing away from the challenge, Sienna volunteered. She successfully scored on the first rep and then executed the jump set on the second.

The moment reminded her that confidence is often built by trying things before you feel completely ready.

As she looks ahead to beach season, and her sophomore year, Sienna is excited to continue expanding her game while building on the confidence she gained throughout the college camp.

Charlotte Smith enjoyed the parts of the college camp that forced athletes to think quickly.

One drill in particular stood out. During 3-on-3 back-row play, the pace increased and players had to make decisions with very little time to react. Charlotte felt her volleyball IQ showed up naturally in those situations, especially when opportunities arose to send the ball over on two and catch the defense off guard.

When reflecting on the day, she kept coming back to the importance of supporting teammates and competing with maximum effort regardless of the score or situation.

Her favorite moments were not necessarily the most complicated plays. They were the long rallies that ended with a kill and rewarded patience, persistence, and teamwork.

As summer continues, Charlotte plans to spend time training in both beach and indoor volleyball while focusing on improving her ability to read the game. She believes better reads create better opportunities, and that understanding continues to shape the way she approaches every match.

Rylie Chandler takes pride in being a complete player.

Throughout the college camp, she felt her volleyball IQ and overall training translated well as the level of competition increased. While many athletes focus on individual skills, Rylie repeatedly returned to mindset and composure when describing her performance.

I take pride in being able to brush off negative points, stay focused, and turn those moments into positive plays.

One moment that stood out came during 6-on-6 competition. Earlier in the college camp, coaches taught athletes how to attack tight balls by getting their feet to the ball, jumping straight up, and using the blocker's high hands. Later in game play, Rylie found herself in the exact situation they had practiced.

The adjustment worked.

For her, the moment was rewarding because it represented something bigger than a single point. It showed that she was listening, learning, and immediately applying new information.

As she continues training this summer, Rylie is focused on becoming a more complete player by expanding her attacking range, improving ball control, and continuing to grow her volleyball IQ.

Charli Ramsey enjoys the parts of volleyball that require creativity.

When the pace increased and rallies became less predictable, she felt comfortable working through out-of-system situations, attacking in faster tempos, and using the block to her advantage through swipes and high hands.

One swing during the college camp captured that confidence perfectly.

Facing a large double block, Charli attacked a go ball down the line for a clean kill. The moment stood out because it reflected the aggressive style of play she has worked hard to develop.

That moment really felt like me.

It is a simple statement, but it says a lot. Athletes spend years trying to discover who they are on the court. Charli seems to have a growing understanding of the type of player she wants to be.

As she continues competing and attending camps, her focus remains on becoming stronger, more explosive, and more consistent against high-level competition.

Kylie Eskridge left the college camp feeling balanced.

Throughout the season, she often felt like one part of her game was receiving more attention than another. Sometimes it was attacking. Other times it was defense or passing. At the camp, she felt those pieces working together more naturally.

Her defensive reads stood out as the pace increased. She moved aggressively, trusted her instincts, and committed herself to keeping balls alive. At the same time, she felt her back-row attacking translated well against stronger competition.

Beyond the volleyball skills, Kylie appreciated the lessons surrounding communication and energy. She realized how much information teammates can share during rallies and how important positive energy can be in helping teams perform at their best.

She also noticed how much coaches appreciated athletes willing to step into unfamiliar roles and compete without excuses.

As she continues training, Kylie plans to focus on increasing her explosiveness, improving her agility, and developing a stronger vertical while continuing to build on the balance she felt throughout the college camp.

Madison Nolting's work with unfamiliar setters created timing challenges early, and finding an offensive rhythm took patience. Rather than forcing the issue, Madison focused on finding other ways to score.

Tooling the block became one of those solutions.

The adjustment helped her stay productive while continuing to learn the tendencies of the setters around her. As the day progressed, she felt herself becoming more comfortable, more confident, and more aggressive.

One of the biggest takeaways came from the college coaches themselves. Madison learned more about generating power through her core instead of relying primarily on her shoulder, a change that can improve both efficiency and long-term durability.

Looking ahead, Madison is focused on continued development while exploring what type of college environment feels like the best fit for her future. She sees the summer as an opportunity to learn more about both her game and herself.

🔥 Athletes

The hitters featured here are all developing different parts of their game, but many shared a similar theme. They are learning how to adapt.

Some talked about adjusting to unfamiliar setters. Others discussed using the block more effectively, trusting their volleyball IQ, communicating through difficult moments, or finding ways to contribute when things were not going exactly as planned. What makes this group interesting is not that they all play the position the same way. It is that they are becoming more aware of the many ways hitters can influence a match beyond a single swing.

Study this group closely. Notice how they talk about confidence, decision-making, coachability, and learning from new experiences. The hitters who continue growing are often the ones who can make adjustments, stay engaged, and find solutions when the game becomes uncomfortable.
