Elite Nebraska 2029s On Our Rankings Radar after GJNC (Pt. 1)

We're approaching that point in our yearly coverage cycle where we ponder an initial ranked list for Nebraska's rising sophomores. This year's onus falls on the Class of 2029, and we've already seen these emergent athletes separate themselves on big stages. Freshman reps from last fall have given way to many more highlight moments during the 2026 club season. It's a lot to think about, and Nebraska's 2029s wrote new narratives all the way into the summer stretch. USAV Nationals was its own chapter.   Naturally, GJNC is an ideal venue to get a barometer on elite talent. The Great Plains Region was well represented in Indianapolis, adding to the Class of 2029 scouting report before our rankings deliberations. So, as we mull over these decisions a little longer, we wanted to give a sneak peek at which names have consistently found the spotlight.   Settle in for another multi-part series.    The future of Nebraska's setter spot is in good hands--literally. Meister guided her Nebraska Elite 15 Apex team through the Open circuit, eventually earning a GJNC berth through wildcard selections. This provided another opportunity for the Omaha Westside sophomore to prove herself as one of the state's top underclassman setters. Indianapolis was treated to the creative, gun-slinging style that has characterized Meister's game since her early prep days. She did not shy away from the chance to lead Omaha Westside through the state tournament last fall, so GJNC was just another big stage for Meister's ledger.     We have another elite distributor to discuss, but this one was hanging out with the 16s crowd. Vejraska was a game-changing signal-caller for VCNebraska 16 Elite, lifting the team to Open status during the qualifier campaign. Her confidence grew throughout 16 Elite's GJNC stint, especially via VCN's quartet of three-set victories. Vejraska can play around the dial and fearlessly square up with opposing left-side hitters, making her the ideal heir apparent at Norris' setter position.     Grand Island Northwest has contributed yet another unstoppable pin to the VCNebraska stable. Payne has the power and athleticism to hit some unfair angles on the pins. This quality jumped out on her USAV Nationals highlight tape as VCNebraska 15 Elite scrapped through the 15 USA division. Whenever 15 Elite needed a momentum-altering swing in Indianapolis, Payne was often the first target. Her explosive step-close is ideal for short-string sets and scramble plays. That leads to plenty of attacking volume, and Grand Island Northwest will readily feed their hot hitter after Payne logged three kills per set as a freshman.     Premier Nebraska 15 Gold's stacked cast of attackers is only part of the picture. Mertens has been a "glue" player since the team's early January reps, delivering the touches needed for everyone else to thrive. She wields a steady, adaptable platform that can cover any open seams next to her fellow passers. The tough serving gauntlet of GJNC's 15 Open division was another test of Mertens' command of the contrasting jersey. She passed every time.     Dabbert's stock has exploded through her late-season production with Premier Nebraska 15 Black. She's the kind of ultra-physical athlete who can command the net in the middle or on the right side. 15 Black has unlocked Dabbert's ability to tee off in the gap and punch through opposing blockers with ruthless efficiency. Many scouting reports dedicate two blockers to slowing Dabbert down, but this high-flying middle goes over the top anyway. Millard West has the makings of another dominant frontcourt force.     We're on a run of setters in this one. O'Neil is the kind of athlete who can lead Omaha Westview to a meteoric rise in the prep hierarchy. She looks ready to pilot the newly formed Wolverine crew after she excelled with this year's Club Legacy 15 Alpha group. Her penchant for clutch performances stood out as 15 Alpha clinched a late-season Liberty berth, and the good times kept rolling at Nationals. O'Neil's persistence yielded a Gold bracket run and more summer triumphs before Year 2 at Westview.     Here's another chance to check in with a trend-setting 2029 on Nebraska's rural circuit. Hinton immediately climbed the leaderboard among first-year scorers last fall, producing 3.5 kills per set for the tournament-bound Patriots. Adams Central got the most out of its freshman star, and South Central NE 15 Black accomplished the same in the spring campaign. Hinton returned to her terminal ways with South Central NE while layering in some incredible first touches as a primary passer. Her all-around influence peaked as 15 Black raced to a 5-0 start at USAV Nationals. Expect a little more postseason volleyball from Hinton before her prep career is over.
