"Setters don't play defense."

Wrong.

Setters need to be ready to play defense at all times. Yes, their job is to run the offense and put their hitters in a position to score. However, the setter position does not stop there. A well-rounded setter can impact a match from every part of the court.

Defense starts with digging the ball, reading hitters, and staying ready for whatever comes next. However, it can also mean stepping into a blocking role when playing in a 5-1 system. Setters need to understand blocking assignments, close seams, and take away space at the net. Those skills matter just as much as making a great set.

The more a setter can do, the more valuable they become.

Hall stays locked in through every phase of the game. She doesn't disappear when she isn't setting. Instead, she stays ready to contribute wherever she is needed. Her quickness, agility, and athleticism allow her to make plays in the back row and at the net.

More importantly, Hall is reliable. You can tell her team trusts her to be ready for whatever comes next. Whether she is defending, transitioning, blocking, or running the offense, she stays focused and ready to make the next play.

Hannemann brings an all-around mentality to the court. She can be involved in nearly every phase of the game, and that versatility only makes her stronger as a setter.

She can defend, block, set, and step in when a rally gets messy. That ability to stay involved helps keep her team moving forward, even when the first contact isn't perfect. Furthermore, playing every phase gives Hannemann a better feel for the entire game and helps her become a more complete offensive leader.

Setters Need to Be Defenders, Too

The best setters aren't waiting for the ball to come directly to them. They are reading the game and staying ready to make the next play.

That means digging when the ball comes their way. It means blocking when they're in the front row. It means covering hitters, chasing down tough balls, and staying engaged when the rally gets unpredictable.

Hall and Hannemann are great examples of setters who understand that their position is about much more than setting the ball. Their ability to contribute across the court makes them more reliable teammates and more complete volleyball players.

So, let's retire the idea that setters don't play defense. Great setters do it all, and the more comfortable they become in every phase, the more they can bring to their teams.

For more Colorado volleyball coverage, player features, rankings, recruiting content, and more, follow @prepdigcolorado on Instagram!
