There are plenty of athletes at the USAV GJNC Showcase looking to make an impression, and sometimes that means stepping out of your normal role. Not every player came into the showcase playing the position they play most of their club season in. A few are natural middles. Some spend most of their time on the outside or even running the offense as a setter. But when the chance appeared to fall into place on the right pin, they seized it.

That's what made this group of players so fun to watch. There was no hesitation. They took on the duties of playing the right side, shutting down blocks against physical outside hitters, becoming dependable out-of-system options, remaining available in transition, and finding ways to score when the ball wasn't always delivered perfectly. They didn't seem like players filling a role. They looked like real pins that knew how to make a match.

The volleyball players below made me realize that the best volleyball players can play multiple positions. They are defined by their ability to compete, adapt, and make a difference where their team needs them. Those girls did just that at the showcase, turning a different role into one of their biggest strengths.

[player_tooltip player_id='734122' first='Grace' last='Hoverson'] is the type of athlete who reminds you that versatility matters. Though a middle blocker, she played right pin at the showcase and never seemed to be limited by the change. She attacked confidently from the right, was available in transition, and always gave her setter another quality option when the play went out of system. She pushed well over the tape at the net, sealed the line, and helped take away quality attacking angles. Her ability to make an immediate impact in a different role shows how complete her game is. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1002516' first='Taimalle' last='Tejada'] displayed her range well past the middle of the floor. She aligned on the right pin and delivered the same physical presence that has powered her career. She built a disciplined block, worked beautifully to close seams, and attacked from a high contact point that kept defenders under pressure. What struck me was how easily she managed the duties of the position. She was not only playing the right side but also producing from it. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

At the showcase, Abisola Adeyemo proved that versatility can be one of your biggest strengths. It was easy to see, while watching her compete on the right pin, how her athleticism translated across the front row. After the transition, she immediately rebuilt her approach and attacked with range, consistently challenging the block and not giving away easy swings. Defensively, she played over the net with strong hands and made quality block touches to keep rallies alive. Her ability to score points from multiple spots remained a bright spot throughout the day. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Melissa Thacker may spend most of her time running an offense, but the showcase showed how complete her overall game has become. She was able to bring out her volleyball IQ in a different way by switching to the right pin. She saw the block coming, attacked into open space, and changed up her shot selection rather than taking one swing. She also stayed active in transition, giving her setter another reliable outlet and showing her skillset is more than just setting the ball. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Shelby Damron is a versatile outside hitter, and she brought the same kind of confidence to the right pin in the showcase. She attacked with purpose, was patient against disciplined blocks, and found different ways time and again to finish off from the right side. I also liked how she took on the blocking responsibilities of the position, closing well at the middle and forcing opposing hitters to adjust their attacks. Her performance reinforced the idea that complete players don't just excel in one role. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
