Tips and Trends: Your Platform Tells on You

There is one skill that every volleyball player shares, regardless of position.

Passing.

It does not matter if you're an outside hitter, middle, setter, opposite, or libero. At some point, the ball is coming your way, and your team is counting on you to deliver a quality first contact. In many ways, your platform becomes a reflection of your habits. It tells coaches whether you move your feet, stay disciplined, and understand the details that keep an offense in rhythm.

That is why great passing is never just about getting the ball over your arms. It is about building trust.

Your Platform Shows Your Habits

Long before a coach notices a big swing or a huge block, they notice how you handle first contact.

Players with consistent platforms square themselves to the target, and stay balanced through the pass. They allow their legs and body position to guide the ball instead of swinging their arms. As a result, the ball comes off their platform cleanly, giving the setter more options and allowing the offense to stay in system.

On the other hand, a platform that is constantly moving often tells a different story. Reaching late, swinging at the ball, or changing arm angles at the last second usually creates passes that drift away from the target. Those small details add up quickly over the course of a match.

Great Passing Starts Before the Ball Arrives

Many young athletes think passing begins when the serve crosses the net.

In reality, it starts much earlier.

Elite passers are already reading the server, recognizing tendencies, and moving their feet before the ball reaches them. Because they beat the ball to the spot, they rarely have to make dramatic last-second adjustments. Instead, they stay calm, create a stable platform, and let solid body position do the work.

The best passers often make difficult serves look routine, not because the serve was easy, but because they prepared for it early.

Every Player Should Value First Contact

Sometimes players think passing belongs to the libero or defensive specialist.

That could not be further from the truth.

Outside hitters pass almost every rotation. Setters frequently take first contact when the serve finds them. Middles chase free balls and cover broken plays. Even right-side hitters find themselves delivering critical passes during long rallies.

Volleyball is unpredictable. The athletes who stay on the court are usually the ones coaches trust to handle whatever comes their way. A reliable platform gives your team confidence before the attack even begins.

The Little Things Create Big Results

Passing is not always flashy, but it might be the most valuable skill on the court.

A clean platform creates better sets. Better sets create more hitting options. More options create a faster offense, and faster offenses score more points. Everything starts with first contact.

The next time you step into serve receive, remember that your platform is saying something before you ever touch the ball. Make sure it tells the story of a player who is prepared, disciplined, and ready for every opportunity.

For more Colorado volleyball tips, recruiting content, and player features, follow along on Instagram @prepdigcolorado.
