This could be a big year for the 2028 setter class.

We've spent a lot of time with this group over the past year, and some setters are ready to take on serious responsibility this high school season. Some already have plenty of varsity experience. Others have made big jumps through club and are walking into the fall looking like completely different players.

That's what makes this group fun. There isn't one type of setter sitting in these rankings. They run the court differently, they win in different ways, and several have made a strong case for where they sit heading into the season.

The 2028 setters are taking control, and this could be the year we really see this group take off.

[player_tooltip player_id='763236' first='Chesney' last='Weber'] did a little bit of everything last fall, and that's what I remember most about her sophomore season. She could run the offense and then turn around and become an attacking option herself, finishing with 165 kills while handling a major setting role. That takes a player who understands more than one part of the court. Now into her junior season, Weber has that experience behind her, and she looks comfortable handling different jobs. She can set, attack, and make plays defensively without looking out of place in any of them. That all-around value matters in our 2028 evaluation because Weber offers more than what you see next to her name on a position list.

[player_tooltip player_id='880845' first='Jaelee' last='Grupe'] can make you forget which position you're supposed to be evaluating her at. She has the hands and court awareness to set, but put her on the right side, and there's an attacking piece there too. Last season, we saw her contribute well beyond assists, including matches where she took on a big defensive load. Grupe can impact a point from different spots on the floor, and she understands the game well enough to adjust to what her team needs from her. That versatility has kept Grupe actively involved as we evaluate the 2028 setter group.

[player_tooltip player_id='737263' first='Finley' last='Luze'] has had a lot of volleyball between the last high school season and this one, and her setter/right-side background gives her a different view of the court. She understands what a hitter wants because she's been on that side of the ball herself, and you can see it in some of the choices she makes with the second contact. Luze can also become an offensive option when she's on the right, which gives her another way to stay involved. The more complete that setter/right-side game becomes, the more interesting Luze gets when evaluating where she fits among the 2028s.

[player_tooltip player_id='932595' first='Jordan' last='Rhead'] looks more comfortable taking ownership of the offense. She isn't just chasing the second ball and putting it somewhere hittable. She thinks more about who she's finding and when she goes there. Rhead will stay with something that's working, move the ball when the block starts leaning, and work to keep her hitters involved when the passing gets uneven. Those decisions happen quickly, and that's where I've seen a difference in her game. For me, that growth in how she thinks through the position is what has strengthened Rhead's place in this 2028 setter group.

With [player_tooltip player_id='730064' first='Camryn' last='Albrecht'], I find myself watching where the ball goes after the defense starts adjusting. She doesn't have to keep feeding the same area of the net just because it worked early on. Albrecht sees when something opens, moves the ball, and can change the offense's rhythm instead of letting the block get comfortable. Her club season gave her plenty of reps making those decisions against good competition, and that experience is showing in how she sees the court. When we're sorting through a deeper setter group, that ability to read, adjust, and make the next decision is something that matters.

The clean ball isn't where I learn the most about Khloie Kinkhammer. Watch what she does when the play breaks down. When the pass pulls her off the net, Kinkhammer competes to get underneath it and still tries to give a hitter something useful rather than simply sending the ball somewhere safe. She stays composed, finds an option, and keeps the offense alive when the original plan is gone. Those are the possessions that have kept Kinkhammer in my 2028 conversation, because they show me something an assistant total never will.
