Balls that looked down kept coming back, tough serves were turned into quality first contact, and rallies lasted longer because these defenders refused to quit on a play. There were simply too many impressive back-row players to stop at one list.

The athletes below earned another look and showed why Minnesota's future in the back row is so promising.

Maddie Wirkkala's platform was one of the cleanest in the gym. She absorbed the pace without letting the ball drift, consistently delivering passes that kept the offense in rhythm. What impressed me most was how early she established her angle before contact. That's a habit that separates experienced defenders, and it's easy to see why she's a player worth following. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Some defenders make the play in front of them. Makenna Korus made plays outside her zone. She covered an impressive amount of court, closed quickly on tips and short balls, and refused to let rallies end easily. That willingness to chase one more ball changes momentum, and it's a trait every coach values in the back row. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Ainsley Kvasnicka played like the quarterback of the back row. She communicated early, trusted her reads, and kept everyone around her organized. Her platform stayed steady through contact, but it was her ability to see the play develop before everyone else that kept drawing my attention. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Kaylee Kleppe was the kind of defender who seemed to show up right when her team needed another touch. She covered for teammates, chased balls into open space, and kept plenty of rallies alive that looked finished. Her effort never dipped, but what really stood out was how quickly she got herself back into position for the next contact. That's a back-row habit that wins points over the course of a match. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Louisa (Lulu) Jaunich looked comfortable taking on the toughest serve-receive balls in the gym. She trusted her platform, stayed balanced through contact, and rarely let the speed of the game rush her. One thing I kept writing down was how often she gave her setter a ball that could actually be run instead of forcing the offense to recover. That's the difference between simply passing and controlling the rally. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Jojo Nguyen has the kind of footwork that gives a defender an extra step before the ball is even hit. She stayed light, adjusted early, and covered ground without wasting movement. There were several rallies where it looked like the attack had found an opening, and Jojo was already sliding into the right spot. Those instincts, which are difficult to teach, make her one of the more enjoyable defenders to watch throughout the day. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Thank you to all my readers for making this journey possible.
