Setters Who Called the Shots at the Katy Cy-Fair Tournament

One of the most competitive and traditional high school volleyball preseason events in the Houston area, the Katy ISD-Cy Fair ISD Tournament took place this past weekend, reuniting 48 varsity teams on six high school campuses in the Katy and Cypress regions between Thursday and Saturday. The first batch highlights the setters who showed something special:    Trevino set for the Cy Woods team that ended the event with five wins and three losses. Backed by her talented setter hands, her playmaking was very creative and dynamic, often getting her hitters in good spots to put the ball down. Trevino used her middles fairly often and did a good job of moving her hitters around when in system, creating mismatches and catching blockers off guard. The senior did well when tracking passes off the net, too, and didn't hesitate when setting against the flow, managing to get her pin hitters 1v1 on some occasions.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/08/2J4A0039_5c11f9.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1018348" /></figure>    Thiele helped Katy Taylor produce a positive 5-3 win record over the weekend. Despite her young age, she's very mature with her distribution and makes the most of her hitters and doesn't overload any of them. Thiele stands out for her ability to move players around and diversify her offense when in system, creating difficult scenarios for opponents to anticipate. The freshman also contributes with her length when blocking at the net and is very determined and reliable on defense.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/08/2J4A0067_3bc361.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1018594" /></figure>    Stuhlmiller was with the Klein Collins side that got four wins and four losses. Her ability to turn passes off the net into hittable sets was of great value for the team and helped their offense to keep working even when serve-receive wasn't the most accurate. Stuhlmiller also thrived when in system, using her middles intelligently and showing great precision when setting the middle back and the right back positions, which opened up new possibilities for her game. Crafty and creative with her setter dumps, the senior also delivered when playing defense.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/08/2J4A0088.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1018376" /></figure>    Paxton and her Katy teammates completed their schedule with four wins and four losses. The junior did a good job of keeping their offense firing on all cylinders with her intelligent and well-balanced distribution. Paxton showed great chemistry with her middles, running different plays with them, and was very precise when delivering a quick set at the pin, getting her hitters in comfortable spots at the net. Her excellent mobility on the court helped keep her team's offense steady when she had to work with passes off the net, as she was still able to push the ball to the pin with remarkable precision. A tall setter, Schneider offered additional contributions when at the net, using her lenght and vision to take on hitting duties and score at a good clip from the right, while also providing a nice blocking presence at the pin. The sophomore also showed an interesting defensive game, combining excellent ball control and superior agility to get to tips and shots.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepdig.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/5/2026/08/2J4A0083_2cc9ab.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-1018854" /></figure>    Wimberley was one of the top players on the Mayde Creek team that secured three wins and five losses. The junior has a good touch on the ball and uses it efficiently in her playmaking, speeding things up when possible and showing good creativity to run combination plays. Wimberley's long arms also make of her a good blocker, as she gets off the floor well and is very aggressive at stopping opponents above the net.
