Six Players Ready for the Fast Decisions of Pace-Sequoyah

Game Day: Saturday, August 29 | 1:00 p.m. | GVCA Playdate at McIntosh High School   Pace Academy and Sequoyah are scheduled to meet during Saturday's GVCA Playdate at McIntosh, giving us a matchup between two programs accustomed to playing meaningful postseason volleyball. Pace reached the Class 4A championship match last fall, while Sequoyah advanced to the Class 5A Final Four.   The current MaxPreps Pace listing has the matchup at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, while the Cherokee County Schools schedule lists Sequoyah's GVCA Playdate simply as TBA, so the event schedule is worth confirming before travel.   This could be one of those matches where the game speeds up quickly.   Both programs have lost experienced seniors from last year's postseason groups. That means younger players are assuming larger roles while returning veterans are being asked to stabilize lineups that look different around them.   These six players bring skill sets that could become especially important when rallies stop being comfortable.    Jessica enters the season as a 5-foot-8 senior setter on a Sequoyah team replacing significant experience from last year's Final Four group. That puts an important responsibility in her hands: help the next version of the offense become comfortable quickly.   What I want to see Saturday is how she handles broken first contact. Pace can create serving pressure, and the most revealing setter plays may be the ones that begin several feet away from target. Can Jessica chase, square enough to remain deceptive and still create a swing that gives her hitter options? The intangible is trust. A new-look offense becomes much easier to manage when hitters believe the setter will keep finding them after mistakes. Senior composure can go a long way toward creating that confidence. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     At 6-foot-1, Elle gives Sequoyah an experienced middle who has already spent several varsity seasons developing both blocking and offensive responsibilities. As a sophomore she was one of Sequoyah's most efficient attackers while also contributing at the net, giving her a strong base entering her senior season.   Against Pace, the battle will be about availability. Strong middles have to make the setter believe the quick is always possible, even after moving laterally to block. Elle's transition effort can determine whether Pace's middle stays committed to her or releases early toward the pins. Defensively, patience matters just as much. Pace has enough positional flexibility to punish a middle who guesses. Elle's ability to read first and move second could help Sequoyah control the center of the net. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Maria has been part of Sequoyah's varsity offense since her freshman season and enters this year as one of the program's most experienced returning pins. Earlier in her career she already showed the ability to contribute as both a scorer and back-row player, producing substantial kill, dig and serve-receive volume as an underclassman.   That complete background should matter against Pace. The Knights are traditionally disciplined enough that one-dimensional attacking becomes easier to contain. Maria's strength can be her ability to stay relevant even when she is not terminating—pass the serve, defend, transition and return as an option later in the rally. The intangible advantage is familiarity with high-pressure volleyball. She has played through postseason environments before, and that experience can help keep a team steady when a short tournament-format set starts moving quickly. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Joi is one of the new pieces on Pace's varsity roster this season, and her background as a 2028 setter gives the Knights another young player capable of influencing how the offense develops over the next several seasons. She is also part of a strong Georgia club pipeline, appearing with [program_tooltip program_id='429883' first='Tsunami' last='']'s 16-1 group and among the state's 2028 setter pool.   Showcase-style matches and playdates can test setters because momentum changes quickly and there is very little time to settle into one rhythm. Joi's opportunity is to show clarity under speed: get her feet to the ball, make a decisive choice and give the hitter a location she can trust. The intangible is ownership. Even younger setters have to communicate like the offense belongs to them. When a setter begins doing that comfortably, the athletes around her usually start looking more confident too. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Melinda's development has been moving toward a larger role for Pace. She is a 2028 middle who has also been used on the right side, and previous Prep Dig evaluation noted growth in her timing, footwork and ability to read the game. Last postseason, she gave Pace productive front-row minutes, including an efficient five-kill performance against East Forsyth.   The skill to watch against Sequoyah is how quickly she processes the rally. Middle and right-side players have to move from blocking responsibility into offense almost instantly. Melinda does not need every set to come her way to create value; staying available can hold a blocker and create space elsewhere. Her progression will become even more interesting if she continues pairing that developing footwork with the confidence to attack imperfect situations instead of needing everything on tempo. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Ansley enters her senior year as one of the returning pins in a Pace lineup that graduated several major attacking options. She has already spent multiple seasons learning the demands of the outside-hitter position inside a program where postseason expectations are normal. MaxPreps lists her as part of the 2026 senior class after varsity experience dating back to at least her sophomore season.   Saturday should test her ability to turn experience into steadiness. Sequoyah has enough front-row size to make careless swings expensive, so Ansley's value can come from managing the entire outside-hitter sequence: first contact, transition, approach and intelligent attack. The intangible I will be watching is how comfortable she looks taking responsibility when Pace needs a stabilizing point. Senior pins often become most valuable when the offense is out of system and everyone already knows where the ball is headed. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    Pace-Sequoyah may not be decided by who begins the match looking most polished.   Tournament-style volleyball rarely works that way.   The setter has to adjust to first contact.   The middle has to adjust to the opposing setter.   The outside hitter has to adjust to the block.   And everyone has to make those corrections before the shortened format runs out of points.
