Six Players Who Could Change the Rhythm of Cartersville-Harrison

Game Day: Thursday, August 27 | 5:30 p.m. | Harrison High School, Kennesaw   Thursday brings together two teams that have wasted very little time establishing themselves. Cartersville enters the week at 11-1 and No. 4 in Georgia on MaxPreps, while Harrison has opened 9-2 and sits among the state's top teams as well. The match is the first half of a Harrison tri-match, with Cartersville scheduled at 5:30 before both teams also see Kell later in the evening.   What makes Cartersville-Harrison especially interesting is how differently the two teams can create pressure. Cartersville has size, front-row versatility and experienced players capable of occupying several roles. Harrison counters with experienced pins, a physical middle and setters who can keep opponents guessing.   The match may turn on which team can control its rhythm first.   These six players could have a lot to say about that.    Emma gives the Hurricanes an offensive organizer who has already spent significant time directing varsity hitters. As a sophomore last season, she led Cartersville with 617 assists and also created major pressure from the service line, finishing with 105 aces.   Those numbers point toward the two parts of her game I find most interesting: tempo and disruption. As a setter, Emma can dictate whether Cartersville plays fast enough to keep Harrison's middle occupied. As a server, she has the ability to make that same job considerably harder for Harrison's setter by moving first contact away from target. The next step in her development is connecting those skills strategically—recognizing which server-versus-passer matchup can create the transition opportunity she wants to run once the ball comes back. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Holly gives Cartersville the type of right-side presence that can affect both of the matchups happening at the antenna. At 6-foot, she has the length to challenge Harrison's left-side attackers as a blocker and enough attacking experience to make the right pin an actual scoring option rather than simply a rotation Cartersville has to survive. She has played across the middle, outside and right side during her varsity career, and she enters her senior season as one of Cartersville's captains.   The skill I want to watch Thursday is how well Holly connects blocking to transition. Harrison has multiple outsides it can feed, so her work cannot end once she closes the block. Getting off the net quickly and becoming available behind the setter can punish Harrison for committing too much attention elsewhere. The intangible advantage is experience. Holly has already played hundreds of varsity sets, and a senior capable of staying patient through changing matchups can bring real stability when a set gets tight. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Blakely gives Cartersville a 6-foot-1 athlete who can move between middle and right-side responsibilities. She was already one of the team's most efficient attackers as a sophomore and finished last season with 89 blocks, so the foundation for two-way net impact is established.   Thursday's challenge will be reading rather than chasing. Harrison has enough offensive options to make an impatient middle pay. Blakely needs to recognize setter tendencies, close with disciplined hands and then immediately work back into transition. The better she becomes at making those movements automatic, the more she can influence the match without needing a huge attacking volume. Sometimes the middle's biggest contribution is simply making the opponent uncomfortable with what is available. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Leila enters this matchup as Harrison's early offensive leader, and her most recent performance showed how many ways she can contribute: 13 kills, nine digs and two aces in a sweep of Wheeler. She currently leads Harrison in kills per set.   The complete nature of that role is what makes her worth watching. Cartersville can present size at the net, so Thursday may become less about whether Leila can overpower the block and more about whether she can solve it. Attacking hands, changing speeds and producing quality swings after serve receive will all matter. The intangible is willingness to carry responsibility after opponents adjust. Experienced outsides become especially valuable when they continue asking for the ball even after the easy scoring windows disappear. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sydney is only a sophomore, but she already has two seasons of meaningful varsity attacking experience. She led Harrison with 290 kills as a freshman and has opened this season right behind Leila in the team's attacking production, including eight kills and three aces against Wheeler.   What I want to see is how Sydney handles a different kind of physical challenge. Cartersville can put length in front of her, which means this matchup should reward approach discipline and vision as much as arm speed. The encouraging part for a young attacker is that these are exactly the matches that expand a toolbox. If Sydney can recognize late hands, use deeper corners and stay aggressive after being slowed a few times, she will show another step toward becoming the type of pin who is difficult to scheme out of a match. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     At 5-foot-11, Skye gives Harrison size and flexibility at setter. She has years of varsity experience in both setting and right-side responsibilities and enters her senior season after sharing significant offensive-control duties throughout Harrison's 30-win 2025 campaign. She has also been Harrison's early leader from the service line this season.   Her value Thursday could come from keeping Cartersville's block uncertain. A taller setter who can attack or remain a legitimate front-row option forces defenders to respect more than distribution. But the bigger intangible is composure. Cartersville will likely create stretches where first contact is not ideal. Skye's ability to remain neutral, chase down the second ball and still give multiple hitters something usable could determine whether Harrison stays offensive or becomes predictable. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    This matchup has several individual battles that should feed directly into one another. [player_tooltip player_id='912834' first='Blakely' last='Morris'] and [player_tooltip player_id='808134' first='Holly' last='Dufrene'] have the ability to change attacking windows at the net.   [player_tooltip player_id='847195' first='Leila' last='Smith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='751081' first='Sydney' last='Hardy'] will have to decide whether those windows can still be exploited.   That is what makes Thursday interesting.   The best player may not be the athlete with the loudest kill.   It may be the one whose skill set forces the other team to change what it wanted to do in the first place.
