Let's run it back.

We're squarely in the middle of one of the most exciting times in the yearly volleyball cycle. The high school season is quickly approaching, and athletes are already prepping for another fall campaign with their teams. This will be my first fall stint as a permanent member of the Prep Dig Kansas beat, and I can't wait to see which players, teams, and storylines emerge.

Of course, the Class of 2028 is bound to command a large chunk of that spotlight. These rising juniors are embracing leadership roles as upperclassmen while also navigating the early stages of their recruiting process. We already covered a handful of uncommitted stars from the Kansas prep scene, but this was just the beginning of the discussion.

We were overdue for a check-in with this triple-double machine. Stover is one of those classic setter-hitters who can fill every corner of the stat sheet. She put down three kills per set with Neodesha last fall while also dishing out over 350 total assists from the back row. The Blue Streaks weren't shy about moving Stover around to give her the different attacking looks in the front row. Then, Stover would help her fellow teammates soar as she ran the offense. This is an upperclassman to rally around as Neodesha builds on last year's excellent 32-8 mark.

We have recent evidence to suggest that Maka is ready for a big junior season with Chaparral High. She was an all-around force at our Prep Dig Missouri/Kansas Stock Up Showcase, producing quality reps in any situation imaginable. Maka is an exceptionally terminal outside hitter who produced 4.5 kills per set with the Roadrunners last fall, but that's not the full story of her on-court influence. Perhaps her best moments at our showcase came while Maka was locking down the middle-back area in serve-pass drills. She doesn't need to light up the scoreboard to stand out, but Maka will still do that anyway.

Let's marvel at Deiter's year-roudn influence at Silver Lake. It's hard to imagine any athlete raising the bar after what this exceptional outside hitter accomplished in 2025. Deiter's 3.6 kills per set and steady backcourt output helped the Eagles post a 46-1 mark and a Class 3A state title. As if that wasn't enough victories on the tab, this spring's 27-1 basketball campaign added to Deiter's greatness in the 2028 ranks. She now becomes the clear focal point of Silver Lake's offense during this fall's title defense.

Bring on the savvy signal-callers. Dorsey amassed plenty of high-level club experience with this year's KC Power 16-2 crew. The team defended home territory en route to a Show Me title, allowing Dorsey to expand her highlight tape at USAV Nationals. Before that, the St. James Academy junior took the reins of the Thunder offense and piled up nearly 1,000 assists as a sophomore. Such a jaw-dropping number is a testament to Dorsey ability to spread the ball around and find the hot hand. Expect similar production in Year 3.

We move from KC Power to Dynasty. Kinsella has earned a few recent shoutouts here, especially after bringing diverse ball control contributions to the Dynasty 16 Black lineup. Her high school career has treated us to her range as a setter, as Kinsella claimed the starting role as a freshman with Olathe North. She maintained her strong setting presence in Year 2, but this versatile gem has embraced a different role with Dynasty. Her stable platform in serve receive has brought a new layer to Kinsella's scouting report, and recruiters will surely take note.

Based on our recent coverage from the Missouri/Kansas showcase and beyond, Jefferson West High School has a lot to like from its group of upperclassmen. Malone should be a major torchbearer for the 2028s after she tallied over 350 digs with the Tigers last fall. Her leadership in the contrasting jersey has stood out in ways that transcend simple numbers on a box score. Malone has the unique task of patrolling Zone 6 as a floor defender, and she embraces the opportunity to command as much of the court as possible. Unconventional methods have produced extraordinary results.

Let's wrap up with a new name for our 2028 radar. We're already evaluating new database additions after out recent rankings update, and Curtis is ready to join the fray. She produced an astonishing 6.1 digs per set with Winfield last fall, but her game film reveals even more about this instinctive libero. Curtis is the kind of defender who makes difficult plays look easy. Her willingness to step in front of fellow defenders to cover rolls shots has allowed the Vikings to flourish in transition. Growth potential is massive for Winfield's emerging group of returning athletes.
