Wisconsin Stock Up: The Players Who Never Stopped Working

A ball went off the court; they chased it. A hitter went up; they were in coverage. Coaches gave them something to change, and you could see them trying it on the next rep. None of that required them to be the one getting the kill.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That effort kept showing up as the day went on. If she wasn't swinging, she was underneath a hitter in coverage or getting off the net for another approach. There were reps where she never touched the ball and still did three things right. A coach gave her something to change; she listened, got back in line, and worked on it. She didn't just nod and go right back to the same thing. That's what kept catching my eye. She ran through the court, worked underneath her hitters, and wasn't afraid to chase one well outside the normal play. Irish didn't shut it down because the chances of saving the ball weren't particularly high. She got moving early and covered more court than you'd expect on several balls. One touch could pull her completely out of position and she'd turn and run to get herself back into the play. There wasn't much watching and hoping someone else would handle it, either. You could hear her calling seams, sorting out serve receive, and talking before the ball ever crossed the net. Then came the part I really liked: she backed up all that communication with her platform. She'd dig for a ball, get knocked down, and already be working herself back up because the rally wasn't finished. There was no time spent watching what happened after her touch. Thoren recovered and went looking for the next ball.
