Own the Net: 6 Georgia Middles Recruiters Should Watch

When a match gets tight, everyone in the gym usually knows where the ball is going.   That is part of what makes evaluating outside hitters in competitive matches so useful. Outsides are frequently asked to terminate imperfect balls, handle a large serve-receive workload and remain available when an offense becomes predictable late in a set.   Tuesday's Georgia schedule produced plenty of those opportunities. Six close matches gave us another group of outside hitters worth putting in front of college coaches.    [player_tooltip player_id='1040463' first='Leona' last='Nugent'] brings one of the more college-projectable physical profiles in this group. At 6-foot-1 with experience at both middle and opposite, Nugent offers size without being locked into one front-row role. That versatility matters because college coaches are often evaluating where a prospect can create the most value within their specific system rather than simply matching her high-school position.   Nugent's .312 hitting percentage is encouraging because efficiency is especially important for middles. The position often operates on fewer swings, meaning wasted attacking opportunities become more costly. Her blocking production adds another dimension. She has shown that she can affect opposing offenses at the net while still remaining efficient as an attacker.   What recruiters should study closely is Nugent's movement. How quickly does she get available in transition? Can she run different tempos? How well does she close outside? Can she provide a legitimate blocking presence from the right side if a college staff chooses to move her? Her positional versatility gives coaches options, and options increase recruiting value. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='913810' first='Mary' last='Allen Smith'] is interesting because she is already producing efficiently while still being relatively early in her development. The sophomore leads Lowndes in both hitting percentage and blocks, two categories that speak directly to the primary responsibilities of the position.   Her .284 efficiency suggests she is learning to make productive attacking decisions instead of simply swinging hard. For young middles, that distinction matters. Being able to score through available seams, attack space and remain patient when the perfect set isn't there is often a better long-term indicator than raw kill totals. Defensively, Smith has already become Lowndes' most productive blocker.   The next step for recruiters is studying her movement patterns. Does she read before moving or chase the ball after the set? How quickly can she transition between blocking and attacking responsibilities? Does she stay available to her setter on broken plays?   Because Smith is only a sophomore, recruiters shouldn't evaluate her as a finished middle. The more compelling question is what does this skill set look like after two additional years of strength, explosiveness and technical development? Her current production provides a strong foundation. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Kiley Halton-Preston may have the most unusual positional profile in this group. She is listed across three roles — middle, setter and right side — and that kind of experience can develop a valuable understanding of the game.   A player who has set understands what setters need from their attackers. A player who has spent time on the right side understands pin-blocking responsibilities. Put those experiences together in the middle and you potentially get a player who processes the game differently than someone who has only played one position. Halton-Preston currently leads Eagle's Landing in blocks, which gives recruiters a concrete starting point.   Her long-term value may ultimately come from versatility. College programs increasingly appreciate players who allow a coaching staff to solve multiple lineup problems without making substitutions every rotation. As a sophomore, her eventual position may still be developing. That is not necessarily a negative. Recruiters should evaluate her footwork, hand contact, ability to attack different tempos and overall feel for the game before deciding exactly where she projects.   Sometimes the most intriguing young prospects are the ones whose final position hasn't been determined yet. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='1040466' first='Rose' last='Kuria'] is developing into a consistent blocking presence for North Cobb Christian. At 5-foot-11, Kuria's ability to produce at the net makes timing and positioning particularly important to her evaluation. She currently leads the Eagles in total blocks, showing that she is finding ways to impact opposing attackers without relying solely on exceptional size. That can be attractive to recruiters.   Successful middles who aren't towering over everyone often develop stronger reading skills because they have to arrive on time rather than simply reach higher. Their footwork has to be efficient, their hands disciplined and their anticipation reliable.   Those are the traits recruiters should examine with Kuria. Her junior status is also significant. She still has another offseason and high-school season to add strength, explosiveness and attacking range.   If Kuria continues developing her lateral movement and becomes an increasingly consistent transition attacker, her current defensive production could evolve into a more complete middle profile. The foundation is already visible. Now the evaluation becomes about trajectory. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='1040462' first='Nya' last='Borders']' value begins with her ability to create a presence in front of opposing attackers.   With 38 blocks already on the season, Borders has established herself as Rockmart's primary defensive presence at the net. For recruiters, the next layer is evaluating her recognition and movement rather than simply the block total.   A productive middle has to process information quickly. Where is the setter? Is the opposing middle committing? Is the ball traveling outside or behind? Can she get off the ground, land balanced and transition immediately?   Borders' production suggests she is consistently putting herself into blocking opportunities, and that is a skill in itself.   Her development should focus on becoming increasingly efficient from pin to pin. If she can continue improving her first step, closing mechanics and ability to take away an attacker's preferred angle, her defensive ceiling rises considerably.   As a junior, Borders still has developmental runway, and that makes her particularly interesting for programs looking beyond finished products and evaluating projection. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='941517' first='Karsyn' last='Baker']'s blocking production immediately gives recruiters something tangible to evaluate, but the more important question is how she is creating those blocks.   Baker plays with an assertive presence at the net and shows the ability to turn defensive reads into point-scoring opportunities. Her seven total blocks against Wheeler, including four solo blocks, are evidence of a middle who isn't simply getting hands above the tape — she is finding opportunities to terminate plays defensively.   At 5-foot-10, Baker may not have the prototypical height some programs initially search for at middle, which makes timing, lateral quickness and hand positioning especially important to her projection. Those are exactly the areas where her film becomes valuable.   She also carries MB/RS experience through M2, giving her positional flexibility. Recruiters should watch how quickly Baker transitions from blocking responsibilities into her approach, whether she can consistently close against faster offenses and how her attacking range develops.   There is also an intangible element to her game that translates well to the position: she plays involved. Middles can disappear when they aren't being fed offensively.
