The high school volleyball season officially got underway last week. The journey to crowing state champions during early November in Coralville began in earnest.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While teams will decide it on the court, predicting who they will be is a fun exercise, for me, and, hopefully, you. We love rankings!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'll be ranking teams in the state's second largest class, 4A, each Monday throughout the season. Here's how I see it one week into the new campaign:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>1. Sioux Center</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Warriors remain in the top spot despite dropping a pair of matches during two opening-week tournaments. One was a 2-1 loss to Hinton and the other a 2-0 setback to Sioux Falls (SD) Christian, a couple of good teams. On the positive side, Sioux Center defeated fellow Class 4A title hopeful Bishop Heelan as well as a good Boyden-Hull squad. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='816843' first='Maryn' last='Franken']</strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/maryn-franken/"></a>&nbsp;hammered out 65 kills in 17 sets to go with 41 digs and 11.0 blocks for the week. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='841522' first='Adison' last='Brantsen']</strong> added 31 kills and picked up a team-best 46 digs. Jorgia VanDeBerg and Stella Hietbrink combined for 45 kills. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>2. Bishop Heelan</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Heelan holds onto the second spot despite a couple of opening-week setbacks, one to No. 1 Sioux Center and the other to Hinton. The Crusaders did knock off Sergeant Bluff-Luton, a 4A state qualifier the last two years, and Southwest Minnesota Christian. A potent Heelan attack was fueled by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='493980' first='Melina' last='Snoozy']</strong>, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='493653' first='Dara' last='Mollet']</strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/dara-mollett-2/"></a> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1020654' first='Claire' last='Nelson']</strong>. Marion</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Wolves moved up one spot this week on the strength of wins against Ames, who beat previous No. 3 Norwalk, and Johnston. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='759977' first='Abbey' last='Kirk']</strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/abbey-kirk/"></a>&nbsp;racked up 58 kills in 17 sets. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='758819' first='Nayomi' last='Vasser']</strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/nayomi-vasser/"></a>&nbsp;and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1017878' first='Kaylene' last='Cordes'] each recorded 27, and Hayden Dietz and Alysin Kinney each posted 21. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>4. Norwalk</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Norwalk lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Ames on opening night, and fell to Dowling Catholic and Western Christian at the Centennial Tournament. The Warriors also defeated Cedar Falls in Ankeny. Junior <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='560368' first='Elle' last='Hatlevig']</strong>, a Michigan State commitment, put down an impressive 88 kills in 14 sets. Embry Dupont posted 29 kills, and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='758781' first='Myla' last='Brown']</strong><a href="https://prepdig.com/player/myla-brown/"></a> had 19. Assumption</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Knights move up a spot to No. 5 despite losing three matches. That's because they beat Centennial and Sioux City East. The losses were to defending 5A champ Waukee Northwest, and by 2-1 scores against Valley and Ankeny, 5A semifinalists last year. [player_tooltip player_id='694203' first='Belle' last='Cotton'] led the way with 51 kills, 29 digs and 10.0 blocks in 16 sets. Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='877691' first='Piper' last='Peterson'] had 28 kills and 12.0 blocks, and sophomore Taylor Camarena delivered 19 kills and 12.0 blocks.
