A clean platform does not happen by accident. It comes from hours of footwork drills, film, and a willingness to treat every rep like it matters, even the ones nobody is watching. The SoCal UpNext Showcase brought together a group of liberos and defensive specialists who talked about their craft in exactly those terms, athletes who are actively rebuilding their technical foundation piece by piece. These are the back row players whose answers revealed a shared focus on platform, footwork, and the process of getting better.

Iyana Carter is putting real work into the technical side of her defense. She is focused on tightening her platform and footwork so she can become more consistent in serve receive and give her teammates something reliable to build around. She describes herself as hardworking, focused, and coachable, and her coaches and teammates would likely say the same, someone who brings determination to every rep. She comes from a military family, with both parents on active duty in the Navy, an upbringing that has taught her to adapt quickly to new environments, a skill that shows up clearly in how fast she reads an unfamiliar serve.

Avilene Diaz, known as Avi, has built an entire offseason around one goal, staying low and disciplined on her platform. She spent the summer combining strength training with libero-specific work on lateral movement, footwork, and reaction time, all in service of becoming more consistent under pressure. She describes herself as competitive, calm, and focused, someone who does not give up on a ball no matter how difficult the angle. Outside the gym, she volunteers regularly at a local dog shelter, a reflection of the same steady patience she brings to reading a hard-driven serve.

Penelope Nguyen wants to master her position, not just play it. She is focused on quickening her reads and sharpening her overall consistency as a libero, treating the role as something to be studied rather than something that simply comes with reps. She describes herself as a team player who puts in effort and supports her teammates, and her coaches and teammates say the same, someone they can trust when the ball is in the air. Outside of volleyball, she channels that same discipline into working out at the gym.

Julia Shi sees defense as the position with the power to change a match. She talks about the ability to shift momentum through a single big dig, and she is currently putting in serious work on her serve receive to make that impact more consistent. She calls herself scrappy, someone who gives 100 percent effort on every play regardless of the score. She jokes that she can either run on six hours of sleep or sleep for fourteen hours straight, a small detail that hints at the same all-in mentality she brings to a match.

Madeleine Saengchanh treats her passing platform like a craft still being sculpted. She is focused on refining her form and technique in serve receive while also learning to read opponents earlier and cover more ground on defense. She describes herself as someone who performs well under pressure, consistent, and an excellent passer who gets along easily with her teammates. She also trains in kickboxing and plays flag football, two pursuits that likely sharpen the same quick reflexes she relies on in the back row.

Camdyn Jensen finds her value in setting the tone before the attack ever begins. Serve receive is her favorite skill specifically because of the way it sets up her team's offense, and she is currently sharpening her out-of-system setting so she can contribute even when a play breaks down. Her coaches and teammates describe her as bringing calm, positive energy paired with real mental and physical toughness, a combination that keeps her steady under pressure. She recently stepped away from club soccer but still plays for fun, along with flag football, staying multi-sport even as volleyball takes priority.

Julianna Sanchez plays defense like every ball is worth chasing down. She talks about diving and laying out for tips and hits just outside her reach, and the energy that a good dig brings to her teammates, while working specifically on her out-of-system setting to round out her game. She describes herself as supportive, someone who keeps a steady head even when her team is down, while her coaches and teammates would call her a ball of energy and fearless. Away from the court, she bakes cookies, cake pops, and bread, finding a different kind of focus in the kitchen.

A clean platform is built one rep at a time, and the liberos and defensive specialists featured here are proof that technical growth is a habit, not a one-time fix. Chasing footwork, reads, and consistency is exactly the kind of work that gets noticed. PrepDig gives you three ways to build on that identity: showcases like UpNext put you in front of real evaluators outside of regular season play, our social media turns performances like these into content coaches and clubs actually see, and our articles start building your name around the habits that matter most in the back row.

Back row development often gets less attention than hitting and blocking, but the athletes featured here show what it looks like when platform discipline and footwork are being coached with real intention. Showcases like UpNext give your defensive players a chance to be evaluated specifically for those habits, outside of pool play pressure. PrepDig works as an extension of your program at every position, whether that means getting your back row athletes seen or building recognition for the players who make everyone else's job easier on the court. Keep your club updated with the California Club Program Database and stay connected to every opportunity we create for exposure.
