Avi Diaz, a libero with secondary reps at defensive specialist, is direct about wanting to be uncomfortable. She said being around “coaches with different experiences and perspectives can help me grow as a player,” and she’s hoping UpNext pushes her “out of my comfort zone” so she can bring new skills back to her SC Rockstar club. Avi is already thinking about the showcase as one stop in a longer development plan, not a standalone event.

Avilene Diaz is a libero who has clearly stepped into a bigger voice on her team, and she’s specific about what that looks like in practice: talking constantly, calling the ball early, directing hitters on defense, and sprinting over to high-five teammates after every play, win or lose. The moment at AAUs backs that up physically as much as vocally. Against Kairos, she went to the floor twice within three touches to keep a ball alive off the net, scrambling under the net on her knees to scoop a rebound back to her setter. She called it a refusal to let the ball die, not a single play, but a standard she’s holding herself to.
That standard extends well beyond the court. Avilene holds a 4.0 GPA, serves as Secretary for her class in the National Charity League, volunteers at weekend dog adoptions through the Lovejoy Foundation, and works with her church to prepare meals and toiletry kits for the LA Mission. She recently became CPR certified ahead of summer babysitting jobs.
This summer, her volleyball goals are just as deliberate: Saturday strength training, weekly private libero lessons, beach volleyball camps and tournaments, and camps at USC, UCLA, UCI, UCSB, and Mira Costa High School.
