Who’s Running the Show? GHSA Setters Keeping Offense on Track

A setter can have a good statistical night without necessarily controlling a match.   The players I enjoy watching are the ones who start making the offense feel calmer. They find the hitter who needs another ball, chase down an ugly first contact without making the next touch look rushed and understand when the offense needs tempo versus when it simply needs something hittable.   Several setters from programs that don't always get statewide attention have taken on significant responsibility this season. These five have done it in very different ways.    Senior Summer Shambo doesn't fit neatly into the traditional setter mold, and that's part of what makes her useful. She has the ability to step outside the distribution role and become a legitimate attacker or defender depending on what the rotation needs.   Summer plays with an assertiveness that shows up when the match gets long. She is willing to take a swing, chase a defensive ball and then turn around and handle the next contact. That versatility can make an offense feel less predictable because opponents can't assume she's simply going to deliver the ball and disappear from the rest of the rally. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sophomore Sienna Sonke is one of the more interesting setters in this group because she doesn't think about the game from only one position. Her outside and right-side experience gives her a natural understanding of approach rhythm, attacking windows and what hitters are actually seeing against the block.   Sienna also moves with purpose when the pass takes her away from target. She is athletic enough to chase a ball and still create an offensive option rather than simply bumping it somewhere safe. As she matures, I'd like to see her continue sharpening the deception in her upper body so blockers have a harder time reading where she's going. The foundation is already there for a setter who can be both physical and creative. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Senior Courtney Quach plays with a little more edge. Her serving gives Harvester Christian an aggressive personality before she ever begins running the offense, and that same confidence carries into her setting.   What I like about Courtney is her willingness to take ownership of momentum. Some setters become passive when their offense struggles, but Courtney has other ways to pull herself back into the match. Her communication and ability to reset after a broken play are important for Harvester because the setter often becomes the player everyone looks toward when a rotation starts unraveling. She has the experience to keep the next rally from looking like the previous one. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Senior Scout Jones brings a steadier style to Academy for Classical Education. She doesn't need every set to look spectacular. Scout's value comes from getting her hitters into a repeatable rhythm and understanding when the best decision is simply putting the ball into a comfortable window.   Her experience at opposite adds another layer. Scout understands how frustrating a ball can be when it drifts too far inside or forces an attacker away from her natural approach, and that perspective shows in the way she tries to make the second contact usable. She plays like a senior who understands that setting is less about showing off her hands and more about making the players around her look comfortable. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sophomore setter [player_tooltip player_id='913815' first='Naomi' last='McPeake'] has taken on a large share of Oglethorpe County's offense, but what interests me most is how involved she remains when the rally stops being clean. Naomi has enough size to be a presence at the net, yet she doesn't play like a setter who needs to remain planted near target to be effective.   Her movement after first contact stands out. Naomi is comfortable defending, releasing toward the ball and still trying to give her hitters something they can attack. Her opposite experience also seems to help her understand spacing from the hitter's perspective. As she continues developing, the biggest jump will come from how well she disguises her decisions and uses her size to become an even more aggressive second-contact threat. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    These five don't all run the same offense, and that's part of what makes the group interesting.   Naomi brings size and athleticism. Scout gives her hitters steadiness. Courtney plays with confidence and emotional control, Sienna brings a hitter's understanding to the setting position and Summer gives Loganville Christian flexibility when the match gets messy.   The best setters don't just touch the second ball.   They make everyone around them feel like the next ball is manageable.
