Avery Kohler 74 Assists in 3 Matches + 5 Setters Keeping Rhythm

Setter numbers can look deceptively simple.   Assist goes up, assist gets recorded.   What the box score doesn't explain is whether the pass was ten feet off the net, whether the setter had to sprint through traffic, whether the middle was available or whether she had to make a decision in half a second with the score tied.   These six setters stood out this week because they kept finding ways to make that second contact useful.    Avery Kohler had one of the busiest setting weekends in the state. She posted 22 assists, three digs and a solo block against Coahulla Creek, then 19 assists, five digs and two aces against South Aiken. Later, in Mount Paran's three-set win over Midtown, Avery delivered 33 assists and seven digs.   Avery had to manage different types of matches without much time between them. Sweeps demand efficiency; a tight three-setter demands patience. What I like is how her assist volume rose when Mount Paran needed more offense against Midtown. She stayed involved defensively too, which makes the setting work even more impressive over a long tournament day. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Karsynn Tucker had a strong Sept. 17 doubleheader. She produced 30 assists, 11 digs and four aces against Grovetown, then followed with 16 assists, four digs and three aces against Harlem as Greenbrier pushed its winning streak to six.   What stood out was the repeatability. Karsynn didn't just have one clean match. She kept Greenbrier moving through multiple opponents on the same night, and she was still defending and serving aggressively while doing it. That's the sort of workload where setter legs can start getting heavy, and location becomes harder to maintain. She continued giving the Wolfpack consistency. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Kami Oates finished Buford's 2-0 victory over Parkview with 16 assists, seven digs and two aces.   I like how complete that line is. Kami wasn't standing at the net waiting for passes to arrive. Seven digs meant she had to defend and then work back into the offense, while the two aces gave Buford points directly from the service line. Those are the matches where you can see a setter affecting the rhythm without every contribution ending in an assist. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Marissa Jones directed Woodward Academy to a 3-0 win over Elite Scholars Academy with 27 assists and nine digs.   Marissa's nine digs matter because they show how often she had to transition from defender back to setter. That's a part of the position that is easy to overlook. The best setters don't need every rally to begin cleanly; they find their way back into the play and give the offense something workable anyway. Marissa did that while keeping Woodward balanced enough to win in straight sets. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Sophomore Kedializ Garcia helped South Paulding come back from a first-set loss to Villa Rica, finishing with 12 assists, 11 digs and two aces in the 2-1 win. South Paulding took the deciding set 15-9.   I like this one because Kedializ had to grow into the match with her team. South Paulding didn't start well, so the setter's job wasn't simply continuing something that was already working. She had to help find a better rhythm. The double-double reflects how much she was doing between contacts, and for a sophomore, those comeback situations are valuable experience. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Ava Whittenburg has already accumulated 284 assists for a Central team that stood 22-6 and No. 6 in Class 5A at the Sept. 21 update. She also appears among Georgia's sophomore assist leaders.   Ava gives this group a slightly different angle because she's developing inside a team that has been winning consistently. That means the challenge isn't always fixing chaos; sometimes it's learning how not to overcomplicate what is already working. Central has productive attackers around her, and Ava's job is making sure they keep getting useful opportunities without the offense becoming predictable. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    Setters rarely get to choose what the first contact looks like.   They just have to solve it.   Kami, Karsynn, Avery, Marissa, Kedializ and Ava have all been doing that in different situations — tournament schedules, comeback wins, strong team runs and difficult defensive rallies. The assist totals matter, but the ability to keep the offense usable is what makes the position so interesting to watch.
