I've spent a lot of time watching the 2030 class this fall, and the outside position keeps giving me new names to write down. At this age, I'm not looking for a finished hitter. I'm watching how they approach, what they do when the set isn't perfect, whether they can find different ways to score and how much of the court they can handle when they rotate to the back row. Some are already swinging with confidence, while others are starting to show the shot selection and court awareness that can separate an outside. These are a few 2030 pins whose play this fall has given me plenty to go back and watch again.

Brynn Jensen-Voeltz has an arm that gets your attention pretty quickly. She can generate pace from the outside, and when she gets into her approach and catches the ball out in front, there's pop behind her swing. I've also liked that she isn't backing away from attacking when the set gets pushed off the net. She still wants to take a swing and put pressure on the defense. Brynn's arm is the first thing that stands out, but watching her learn how to use it in different situations is what has kept me coming back this fall. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

I like watching what [player_tooltip player_id='1047641' first='Genevieve' last='Ahlberg'] does once the block gets in front of her. She isn't attacking with blinders on. Genevieve sees hands, recognizes the space around them, and finds different places to put the ball. I've watched her change her shot instead of forcing the same swing into a well-formed block, and that's a piece of attacking that takes some hitters a while to figure out. Her ability to see what is happening across the net and then act on it is what has stood out in her game. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Give [player_tooltip player_id='966573' first='Chloe' last='Koons'] an out-of-system ball, and I still expect her to make a play. That's where I've really enjoyed watching her. When the pass breaks down and the set gets pushed high or off the net, Chloe doesn't treat it like a throwaway swing. She gets herself to the ball and looks at what she can do with it. Sometimes that's attacking available court, sometimes it's using the defense, and sometimes it's simply giving her team a good ball back and another chance to defend. There's purpose behind those touches, and that's valuable from the outside. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1047631' first='Berkley' last='Pochant'] plays the outside position aggressively. She wants to attack, and you can see that before the ball ever gets to her. She works to get off the net, gets herself into an approach, and is ready to go when the set comes her direction. I like that she doesn't need everything to be perfect before she'll challenge the defense. Berkley plays the pin with assertiveness, and when she gets opportunities, she keeps coming back looking for another one. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

It's easy to watch [player_tooltip player_id='987476' first='Nola' last='Quichocho'] at the net and focus on what she can give you offensively, but don't stop watching when she goes into serve-receive. That's a big part of why she is on this list. Nola has a strong feel for serve-receive and takes pride in that first contact. She works to get her platform behind the ball and give her setter something usable, then gets herself into transition and becomes an attacking option again. She's showing pieces of the all-around game you want from an outside, and that makes her an interesting 2030 prospect to follow. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='913428' first='Emma' last='Scott'] has skill, but what keeps catching me is how she thinks her way through a rally. She reads what's developing and adjusts instead of deciding what she's going to do before the ball ever reaches her. If the set isn't where she expected it, she adjusts. When the block takes away her first option, she looks for another. And when a ball isn't there to be terminated, she understands that keeping her team in the rally can be the right play. That combination of skill and volleyball IQ gives Emma a really nice base to build from. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
