3A South Semi State Players You Must See

With 32 teams remaining statewide in the four classes of the Indiana state volleyball playoff, there are a number of storylines that can be written. We're spending a bunch of column space writing about the impact players on each team at each round of the tournament, and with the semi state looming on Saturday, what better time to talk about the best of the best? Of the four remaining teams in the southern half of the 3A draw, three are ranked in the top five in the state, which should produce some of the best volleyball in Indiana on Halloween. Here are four players from the four teams remaining, and what impact each can bring to will their squad to Gainbridge next week.    I'm not one to talk about defensive specialists, since there are SO many here in Indiana. In Nora's case, multiple coaches have reached out to me personally to say how game-changing and “real deal” Nora is for the Wildcats. The Dayton commit is THE reason you should watch the first match of the 3A south semi state. Her poise in serve receive, the calm platform with active feet on floor defense, and her leadership and presence are major factors in Jasper making it this far, with a chance to go all the way.     For years, I've sung the praises of Miss Ward, and the SMU product is an absolute athletic beast when the whistle blows. Don't let that sweet smile fool you—her relentlessness, competitive nature, and ability to damage floorboards on a regular basis are reason enough to buy a ticket and watch this young lady play mature, ACC-ready volleyball. The offensive stalwart of a resurgent Bruin program over the last few years, Caroline is one of the best (period) players (period) in Indiana (full stop), and is worth your time to watch her work on the biggest stage.     Speaking of nice kids that transform once the match starts, Caroline is the offensive leader for blue-blood Cathedral, and has been for the last few years for the Fighting Irish. One of the more smooth players in this class, Caroline's ability to make the game look easy in such a lithe frame is fun to watch, and her energy looks endless. Her volleyball IQ has been off the charts for some time, and she's used that high-end knowledge to score well past 1000 points in her high school career.     Tucked away in southeastern Indiana, Madi has made a name for herself quite quickly in the last year or so. As a part-time defender last season, and now the full-time libero, Madi has a read-and-react that is above average and can turn what might be chaos into a continued play and an in-system pass. Left-back is her home base, where she has active feet when needed, and an ability to be around the ball exactly when the Bulldogs need her to be. To pull off the upset, Batesville is going to need each and every contact of hers to be spot-on—-just like they were against Evansville Mater Dei in a four-set win in the regional (32 digs!).
