Buford's season ended in the opening round of the state tournament, but the final result shouldn't erase what the evaluation process gives us.

Successful high-school teams give us a chance to look at players in roles where winning requires more than individual production.

These five showed different versions of value.

Hayden emerged as one of Buford's most consistent offensive options during the season. She posted 14 kills in a four-set region win over Mill Creek and had 10 in the Wolves' comeback victory over Parkview. The sophomore piece is important, but the evaluation shouldn't stop there.

I'm interested in repeatability. Can Hayden continue producing when the opposing block knows she's an important option? Does she maintain approach discipline when the pass changes? Can she recognize when power isn't the correct answer?

Young hitters often separate themselves by how quickly their shot selection catches up to their physical tools. That's the recruiting trait to follow here. The ability to terminate gets attention. The ability to problem-solve keeps a hitter on the floor when the block gets better. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Crawford produced 10 kills in Buford's comeback against Parkview and led the Wolves with 11 kills in their Senior Night sweep of Dacula. That gives us evidence of another young attacker capable of carrying meaningful offensive volume. What I like from a recruiting perspective is the competition for touches.

When a team has more than one viable hitter, an attacker has to remain engaged even when several rallies pass without her receiving the ball. Transition has to stay hard. Approach timing has to remain available. Body language can't disappear because the previous ball went somewhere else. For Crawford, continued development in those non-contact possessions will determine how complete the offensive profile becomes. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Myers gives us a different evaluation. She set a career high with five blocks in Buford's early-season win over Greater Atlanta Christian and later contributed eight kills in the sweep of Dacula. That two-way front-row impact is what makes her interesting.

Blocking production is useful, but recruiters need to understand how she's producing it. Is she reading the setter or simply reacting to the ball? Are her first two steps efficient? Can she close without creating a seam between herself and the pin blocker?

Offensively, the eight-kill performance shows she can't simply be ignored after leaving the block. A front-row player who can affect the opponent defensively and remain credible in transition gives a setter more freedom. That's real lineup value. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Mathews delivered eight kills and five blocks in Buford's four-set win over Mill Creek. For a freshman, that stat line gets attention because it shows influence on both sides of the net. But from a recruiting standpoint, the age makes the technical details more interesting than the totals.

Young blockers often rely on athleticism and reach. The next step is learning efficiency. Reading the pass. Identifying the setter's available options. Getting the first step in the correct direction. Penetrating across the net instead of simply jumping beside it.

Offensively, the same principle applies. Footwork and timing create a more sustainable attacking profile than raw explosiveness alone. Mathews already has evidence that she can affect varsity matches. Now the evaluation becomes about how quickly the technique develops around those tools. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Callender repeatedly provided Buford with defensive production, including 20 digs in the win over Greater Atlanta Christian and 21 across the Wolves' two victories during Gwinnett County Tournament pool play. Her senior evaluation is about steadiness. Good defensive players reduce chaos.

They don't need every ball to become a highlight because their positioning allows them to turn difficult attacks into usable contacts. That's the standard I'll use evaluating Callender. How early does she read? How much court does she control without creating confusion beside another passer? Does her contact quality allow the setter to stay offensive? Those are the details that determine whether defensive production translates to the college level. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Buford's 25-win season gave several players meaningful opportunities to show what they can bring to a lineup.

Hayden and Crawford showed young offensive responsibility. Myers demonstrated two-way front-row potential. Mathews made a varsity impact unusually early, and Callender supplied senior stability behind them.

That's the part of evaluation worth carrying beyond the final record.
