[player_tooltip player_id='1057256' first='Emma' last='Smajlovic'] and The Titans Showing Why North Oconee Is Still Climbing

North Oconee has officially moved into new territory.

The Titans defeated Central Carrollton 3-1 in Saturday's Class 5A quarterfinal to secure the first Final Four appearance in program history. The win also marked head coach Taylor Brooks' 100th career victory. It came after a straight-set Sweet 16 win over Union Grove in which North Oconee received production from nearly every part of the lineup.

What I like about this run is that the evaluation isn't centered on one dominant player. North Oconee has different personalities filling different jobs, and several of them are showing traits that matter when projecting beyond high school.

Emma is settling into the postseason with the type of control that makes a setter easier to trust. She finished the quarterfinal with 15 assists and nine digs after producing 17 assists, eight digs and four aces in the Sweet 16. The defensive numbers are important because they show how quickly she reconnects to the rally after delivering the second contact. She isn't treating setting as the end of her responsibility.

The stronger part of Emma's evaluation may be her approach to improvement. Her coaches have described a player who actively asks what she can do better, seeks extra repetitions and reflects on what the team needs from her. That's coachability in a form recruiters can actually use. At setter, adjustments happen constantly. Emma appears comfortable receiving information, processing it and applying it rather than needing everything to stay familiar. That learning mentality pairs well with the leadership responsibility already on her shoulders. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Sydney gives North Oconee a different type of problem from the pin. She posted 14 kills and 13 digs against Union Grove, and that balance says a lot about how she affects a match. She's capable of carrying attacking volume without becoming disconnected once she rotates behind the ten-foot line.

Her setter background adds another layer to the evaluation. Sydney sees more of the structure developing around a rally than a pin who has only ever played one role. That shows in the way she can remain useful when the play changes shape. She can attack high, handle first-contact responsibility and continue working through transition instead of waiting for the next perfect swing. At 6-foot, the physical profile gets attention. The broader court understanding is what makes the profile more complete. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Addie has looked comfortable accepting postseason volume. She led North Oconee with 17 kills in the Sweet 16, and there is something valuable about a senior pin who continues presenting herself as an option when everyone knows the ball may be coming her way.

What stands out to me with Addie is the repeatability of her role. She doesn't need the offense redesigned around her to have an impact. She works from the left, keeps herself available through transition and gives the setter a familiar target when the rally gets stretched away from the system. That sounds simple, but dependable pins are difficult to replace. Addie's senior experience shows in her willingness to keep taking responsible swings rather than allowing one difficult contact to change the next approach. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Lynlee is becoming more involved offensively at exactly the right point of the season. She and Miriam combined for 14 kills against Union Grove in what their coach identified as their best collective middle performance of the year. That is an encouraging development for a team that already has reliable pin production.

I like the way Lynlee's role can change the speed of a rally. When she gets off the net quickly and makes herself available, the opposing middle has less freedom to release early toward the outside. Her recruiting upside is tied to how efficiently she can continue connecting her blocking footwork to transition offense. The faster those two jobs become one continuous movement, the more disruptive she can be without needing a huge number of sets. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Miriam gives the middle position a veteran presence that looks different from Lynlee's developing physical upside. She was part of that 14-kill middle performance in the Sweet 16, but her value is also in how seriously she treats the possessions when the ball isn't set to her.

A good senior middle understands that running a route can matter even when she never receives the ball. Miriam stays involved enough to make the opposing block account for the center of the net, and that gives North Oconee's pins more room to work. There is positional discipline in that. She doesn't need to be rewarded on every approach to continue doing the work that creates spacing for somebody else. That's the type of unselfish front-row behavior that helps an offense stay connected. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

North Oconee's first Final Four run is giving us several different evaluations at once.

Emma is showing why coachability matters at setter. Sydney combines pin production with a broader understanding of the floor. Addie gives the Titans a senior attacker they can keep returning to, while Lynlee and Miriam are making the middle increasingly relevant.

That's a good formula to carry into a semifinal.
