This is it. Sub-district play starts today, and that will feed into final district matchups. Class A and B join the party this weekend. Our recent features have been solely focused on players who could enjoy a postseason breakthrough, and the Class of 2028 has been particularly prominent in this coverage. However, we can't forget about the future leaders on Nebraska's prep scene.

That brings us to the underclassmen. The postseason is often seen as a venue for veterans to flex their dominance, but younger athletes know how to find their foothold here, too. We're tracking a handful of underclassmen with serious gain potential as the pressure ramps up this week.

Why not start with a new name for our 2029 database? We're already thinking about the next overhaul for our sophomore rankings, and de Koning is a sure addition to the crew. This emergent athlete may have a future as a setter in the Chadron lineup, but 2026 has brought de Koning's terminal prowess firmly into focus. She has tallied over 200 total kills to climb Nebraska's leaderboards, helping the Cardinals notch an 18-16 record in Class C1. De Koning does most of her damage on the right side and has become a valuable blocking anchor against opposing left sides. Chadron will join its western Nebraska neighbors in the C1-10 sub-district, where a quarterfinal contest with Chase County awaits.

Bring on the defending champs. Freeman has leaned on several new contributors this fall after winning the 2025 Class C2 title, but Albers Dorn is one of the vital constants. This springy outside hitter logged two kills per set during last year's championship run, but she has upped that average to three as a sophomore. Alberns Dorn has been at her best in high-profile matches, including a 22-kill outing against Johnson-Brock. The title defense goes through C2-1, where Freeman will meet second-seeded Elmwood-Murdock in Thayer Central's gym.

It's been too long since we've checked in on the Swedes. The Harvest Festival hosts have made their share of tournament appearances this decade, so we always have to keep an eye on Gothenburg's rising stars. Flesch has taken the reins of this year's offense and has played around the dial for her balanced, terminal squad. Her serving rotation has been a scoring gold mine for the Swedes this year, with Flesch delivering tough, winding serves with plenty of pace. The C1-7 sub-district is loaded, but Flesh and her team can make some noise as the No. 2 seed.

Let's get Class A in the picture. The end of this year's club season provided a strong case for Curnyn's high-impact potential at Omaha Marian. She helped anchor the back row for her Premier Nebraska crew, becoming especially effective while leading the unit at USAV Nationals. We've seen Curnyn thrive as a DS on the club side, but her skills as a setter have also flourished with the Crusaders. Her ball control finesse elevated Marian to the No. 3 seed heading into Class A districts, so postseason prospects are looking good.

We've wanted to discuss this Star City attacker for a while, and the final stretch in Class B feels like a good time to do it. Springer has found her stride on the left side as Lincoln Pius X has ascended the wildcard hierarchy before districts. She's about to eclipse 200 total kills in her debut season and has developed a wicked crosscourt shot on the pin. Springer is building off back-to-back double-digit-kill performances against Omaha Marian and Omaha Westside, proving she can excel against Class A foes, too. The Class B grind resumes as the Thunderbolts host York, Blair, and North Platte in the B-7 bracket.

Find a freshman pin hitter who can do a little of everything. Trompke has led Loomis in both kills per set and digs per set, adding some first-year flair to an otherwise experienced Wolves rotation. Out-of-system attacking has been a particular strength of Trompke's game, as she can snap on a high ball and carve angles around the block. Then, she'll rotate into the backcourt and showcase her steady platform. These skills will be tested in the D1-10 semifinal meeting with Arapahoe.

Freshman setters are a rarity at the varsity level, and ones with Bauer's numbers are even more uncommon. The first-year signal-caller has amassed nearly nine assists per set for Deshler, piloting the Dragons to an 18-9 record in Class D1. Her command of a 5-1 system has aided Deshler's balanced attack, but that's not the only place where Bauer's maturity has shone. She has been a stout frontcourt defender and has taken that same intensity to the right-back area. Look for the Dragons to continue their impressive 2026 campaign in the D1-2 bracket at Tri County.
