The sophomore class is making plenty of noise on the varsity court this season, with talented players stepping into bigger roles and proving they can compete at a high level. From powerful attackers and versatile middles to setters running the offense with confidence, these young athletes are putting together some impressive performances. Many have already become key contributors to their teams, racking up impressive stats, reaching milestones, and making their presence felt on both sides of the ball. With two more years of high school volleyball still ahead of them, these sophomore standouts are giving us plenty of reasons to keep watching as they continue to develop their games. I always love hearing from players, especially Minnesota athletes and I'm always looking for new players to watch and follow! Staloch is one of those versatile, athletic middles who moves around the court with ease. She is quick on her feet, has great reactions to the ball, and moves exceptionally well laterally, allowing her to cover a lot of ground along the net. Offensively, she is just as effective attacking on the move as she is swinging from middle and right pin. Her ability to adjust, transition quickly, and find ways to contribute from different spots on the court makes her a fun player to watch. This season, she has recorded 143 kills, averaging 2.3 kills per set while hitting an impressive .248. Stevens is a sophomore middle who brings a great combination of power and finesse to the court. She knows how to put away a big swing, use opposing blockers to her advantage, and recognize when to take something off her attack and place a well placed shot into open court. Her ability to mix up her shots and keep defenders guessing makes her a tough matchup at the net. So far this season, Stevens has recorded 43 blocks, is averaging 2.5 kills per set, and has added 15 assists and 52 digs. Obermeyer is a new pin hitter who has recently jumped onto my radar. The United South Central standout has put together a solid season, racking up 130 kills while averaging nearly 2 kills per set, along with 7 blocks and 113 digs. She reads the net well, knows how to use opposing blockers to her advantage, and has a knack for finding ways to put the ball down. Whether she's swinging hard or finding an opening in the defense, Obermeyer consistently finds ways to score, making her an important piece of United South Central's offense. Hayden is closing in on an impressive milestone, as the sophomore setter is expected to reach her 1,000th career assist next week. She has done a great job running the offense for Roseau this season, helping lead the Rams to a 14-7 record. With 381 assists already this year and an average of 7.3 assists per set, Hayden has proven to be a steady presence on the court. Her ability to direct the offense and consistently put her hitters in position to score has made her a key part of Roseau's success. Moore is a fiery pin hitter with an impressive vertical and a powerful arm swing that has helped her put together quite the stat sheet for Northwestern out of Maple this season. Making the transition from the middle to the pin has proven to be a successful move, as she has become a major offensive weapon for her team. Averaging 3.6 kills per set, Moore brings plenty of power to the net and isn't afraid to take a big swing. She has also made her presence felt in other areas of the game, recording 46 aces, 29 blocks, and 140 digs. Her athleticism, explosiveness, and ability to contribute on both sides of the ball make her quite the player to watch.
