The Chargers have been sitting at the top of the rankings, and with postseason play approaching, they're certainly going to be a difficult team to knock off. But when I look at the other programs having strong seasons, I don't think winning a state championship is going to be that easy.

Dell Rapids has an impressive 19-2 record, Dakota Valley has spent the season facing some tough competition, and St. Thomas More has been putting together plenty of wins out West. Three different teams with different paths to this point, but all have reasons to feel good about their chances. What I'm excited for most is seeing how they match up when the regular-season records no longer matter and every match becomes an opportunity to move one step closer to state.

Sioux Falls Christian has earned its place at the top.

There's a reason Sioux Falls Christian continues to be one of the first programs mentioned when talking about Class A volleyball. The Chargers have established a winning tradition, and they've once again put themselves in a strong position heading into the postseason.

Two players who deserve attention are [player_tooltip player_id='746005' first='Ella' last='Fluth'] and [player_tooltip player_id='753852' first='Jayla' last='Overman']. Both stand 6-foot, giving Sioux Falls Christian some good size across the front row, but they bring different options to the offense.

Fluth is an outside hitter who gives the Chargers a presence on the left pin. Having that size available on the outside is valuable, particularly against teams with strong blockers who can make it difficult to find attacking opportunities.

Overman brings versatility with her ability to play both middle and outside. That's something I like about her role because it provides Sioux Falls Christian options depending on the lineup and the opponent. When you have multiple players who can contribute across the front row, opposing teams have more to prepare for.

The greatest challenge for Sioux Falls Christian might be handling the expectations that come with being the favorite. Every team wants a chance to beat the program at the top, and the Chargers are going to have to earn their way through some talented competition.

Dell Rapids has the record to back it up

At 19-2, Dell Rapids has done more than enough to earn a place in the Class A conversation. Putting together that kind of record takes consistency, and the Quarriers have given themselves a reason to feel confident heading into tournament play.

One player I'm interested in following is [player_tooltip player_id='729589' first='Sylea' last='Sykes']. She contributes both offensively and in the back row, giving Dell Rapids someone who can be involved in different parts of a match. I appreciate players who take on multiple responsibilities because they contribute even when they aren't getting opportunities to attack.

What makes Dell Rapids interesting is the opportunity to see how its regular-season success translates against the strongest teams in Class A. The Quarriers have been finding ways to win, but postseason volleyball brings a different kind of pressure, especially when a match gets tight late in a set.

If Dell Rapids gets an opportunity to face Sioux Falls Christian, that's a matchup I'd be interested in following. Their record suggests they belong in the conversation, and a meeting with the Chargers would give them a chance to prove it on the court.

Dakota Valley has been tested all season.

Dakota Valley is one team I wouldn't judge entirely by its 18-10 record. The Panthers have played a demanding schedule that includes Class AA opponents and out-of-state competition, and that deserves some consideration when looking at what they might bring into the postseason.

There's value in facing strong teams throughout the fall. Not every match is going to go your way, but those experiences can show players where they need to improve and how to respond when an opponent starts taking control. Dakota Valley has had plenty of opportunities to work through those situations.

[player_tooltip player_id='446330' first='Coryn' last='Kimbell'], [player_tooltip player_id='1022903' first='Tinsley' last='Sorensen'], and Ava Redstone are three players to know when looking at the Panthers' front row. They give Dakota Valley multiple attacking options, something that could become important against opponents who are able to take away a team's first choice offensively.

I'm interested in seeing how this group responds when tournament play begins. Dakota Valley has already faced challenging competition, and I wouldn't be surprised if those experiences help the Panthers prepare for another difficult matchup.

A team with ten losses might not immediately grab everyone's attention, but there's more to evaluating a postseason contender than looking at the win-loss column.

St. Thomas More is making its case out West.

St. Thomas More is another program I want to include in this conversation. The Cavaliers have put together a 27-9 record, and they've played enough volleyball this season to know what it takes to work through a difficult match.

Kaitlin Strain, Kaitlyn Birdwell, and Ella Schleiffarth are three players who give St. Thomas More options offensively. Having several athletes who can contribute is important when opponents start making adjustments, and it gives the Cavaliers different ways to find success.

One thing I enjoy about covering South Dakota volleyball is seeing the talent coming from different parts of the state. It's easy for much of the conversation to center around the programs in the eastern part of South Dakota, but teams like St. Thomas More deserve attention for the seasons they're putting together.

The Cavaliers have earned their place among the programs worth watching. Now the question is whether they can carry that success into the matches that matter most.

Someone has to take down the favorite

Sioux Falls Christian has earned the attention that comes with being at the top of Class A, but there are some interesting challengers waiting for their opportunity.

Dell Rapids has been winning consistently, Dakota Valley has faced a schedule that should have them prepared for difficult matches, and St. Thomas More has put together a strong season out West. Each team has a different story, and that's what makes the postseason worth following.

I'm also looking forward to seeing which players stand out along the way. Fluth and Overman give Sioux Falls Christian size and versatility, Sykes has an important role for Dell Rapids, Dakota Valley has several front-row options, and St. Thomas More has its own group of players looking to help the Cavaliers make a run.

The rankings give us an idea of where these teams stand today, but they won't decide who finishes on top. That's going to happen on the court, one match at a time.

Sioux Falls Christian may be the favorite, but I wouldn't be handing the Chargers the trophy just yet. There are three other programs with plenty to play for, and I'm excited to see who can make the Class A championship race a little more interesting. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Thank you, readers, for making this journey possible.
