Texas Friday Showdown With a Title on the Line

The high school volleyball season is nearing its end and there are some teams and players who are making a name for themselves. This season has proven to be another great showing from our wonderful and amazing players. Let's take a look at some of the intriguing storylines from the Lone Star State as we head into the playoffs.

Westlake

Westlake entered the season as the top team in Central Texas, and it has spent the fall proving why. The Chaps are 36-8 and have already locked up the top Division II seed out of District 25-6A. Coach Miguel Saenz builds teams around elite ball control and this group is no different. Westlake beat Lake Travis in four sets and Round Rock in four sets at home to take control of the district race. Saenz pointed to his defense after those wins and the Chaps held both opponents' top scorers in check. Clayton Kelly and Geralynn Byers-Veal give Westlake two pins who can score from anywhere. Both had 11 kills in a recent sweep of McNeil. The Chaps had 14 different players record a dig in that match, which tells you how deep this roster is. Friday's trip to Lake Travis will decide whether Westlake wins the title outright or shares it. Either way the Chaps head into November with one of the best resumes in the state.

Lake Travis

Lake Travis has a chance to turn a good regular season into a great one on Friday. The Cavaliers are 36-6 and can earn a share of the 25-6A title by defending their home court against Westlake. [player_tooltip player_id='804316' first='Maggie' last='Wheeler'] gives Lake Travis a physical outside who also defends at a high level. She had 14 kills and 21 digs in the first meeting with Westlake. [player_tooltip player_id='534291' first='Gentry' last='Barker'] is the other half of a strong pin tandem and added 12 kills with 13 digs that night. Setter Tatum Wilson keeps both of them fed and runs a fast offense when the pass is on target. Libero [player_tooltip player_id='804327' first='Xyanna' last='Stephens'] is the heartbeat of the defense and was named the Most Valuable Libero at Volleyfest. Stephens posted 26 digs against Westlake and rarely lets a ball hit the floor. Round Rock and Westlake both beat the Cavs in district, so this group knows what is at stake. A home win Friday would set up Lake Travis for a serious run in the 6A Division I bracket.

As always stay tuned for more articles on your favorite athletes. If you have anyone you think we should watch out for, please shoot me an email with some info at Michael@prepdig.com. You can also DM me in Instagram and X by searching @CoachMikeDZ. Also don't forget to help these kids get more exposure by sharing our stories with your friends. Help us help them by simply reposting on X or sharing on Facebook. Thanks for following us, Prep Dig Texas Family! Don't be afraid to interact with us. We love the likes, shares, and quotes/comments. Keep them coming!
