2029 Liberos Stepping Up

Liberos are often a team's emotional engine; when a momentum-changing dig or save is needed, they have to deliver. Often the smallest player on the court, they also bring the most hype and energy, keeping the vibes high and the flow going even when they take a swing off the side of their face. It's not easy to do that as a sophomore; these players have handled the pressure and made the most of their opportunities this season.    Hurtado has surpassed the 20-dig mark twice this season for Lynnwood. The 2029 libero prospect cleaned up 22 attacks versus Cascade early in the season and tallied 23 digs in late October versus Shorecrest. She has also been busy in serve receive and is averaging 6 receptions per set this year. Hurtado handles hard swings effectively; she has a solid base and cushions the ball, keeping her setter out of the net.     White River is one of the best teams in the state this season and has a long list of quality upperclassman defenders. Haugen has seen time on the back line and has been solid when she has had her chances. She plays with grit and is willing to go all out to make a play that keeps a rally alive. The quick, determined 2029 prospect should have another big club season before being called upon next fall to step into a more prominent role as the Hornets lose eight seniors to graduation.     The Black Hills sophomore is a dynamic player who has worked hard on every aspect of her game. She has a tough lefty serve that keeps teams out of system, can set to either pin when she has to handle the second ball, and racks up digs with smart, well-positioned defense relative to the block. Call it feel, volleyball IQ, or reading- Manning has an outstanding sense of where to be on the court during any particular situation or attack, and consistently betters the ball, giving her team a chance to score.     Ursache has been handling the libero jersey for Mountain View, and the Thunder from Vancouver are right in the thick of the standings with Prairie and Kelso. The 2029 defender is handling just about 16 serve receptions per match, while posting a season high of 23 digs against Kelso and 20 versus Prairie. Ursache does an excellent job covering tips and shots from her left back position; she makes it difficult to score with anything other than a solid swing.     Wimsatt has been making late-season plays for Woodinville, handling Libero and DS duties for the Falcons. She has a hard-to-handle line-to-line serve that she hits accurately and with pace, and the 2029 defender is very capable of setting the second ball accurately with her platform. Wimsatt makes good serve-receive choices, angling her platform early when needed or confidently handling serves with her hands. Her short-space quickness and reactions are terrific; Wimsatt is a player to watch this club season.
