Beyond the Stat Sheet : Southern 2A Semifinal Standouts

A block touch that gives a teammate time to recover, a hitter covering an attack, or a well-placed set can change a rally without becoming the finishing play. During the Southern 2A semifinals at GV Christian on October 31, those contributions caught my attention alongside the kills and aces. These six players stood out through the details of their play and the opportunities they created for their teams.

[player_tooltip player_id='1060143' first='Kendyll' last='Zarley'], a junior middle blocker for GV Christian, stayed active at the net against Founders Classical Academy. Those touches helped take pace off the ball and gave her teammates opportunities to keep rallies alive. Her involvement on both sides of the net showed how a middle blocker could contribute beyond the finishing swing.

[player_tooltip player_id='1060144' first='Gabriella' last='Delgado'], a junior setter and right-side hitter for GV Christian, contributed through a series of smaller plays against Founders Classical Academy. She served consistently and delivered steady sets that helped her teammates stay involved in the offense. Her coverage stood out during one rally when she recovered two blocked attacks to keep the play alive. Those saves gave GV Christian additional opportunities to attack within the same rally. Delgado's performance highlighted the value of staying involved after the set and being ready when the ball came back.

[player_tooltip player_id='1060147' first='Addison' last='Burns'], a middle blocker for Founders Classical Academy, stood out through her repeated involvement at the net against GV Christian. She scored twice on quick sets, adding an offensive contribution through the middle. Her blocking drew the most attention as GV Christian created numerous attacking opportunities. Burns read the developing attacks well, getting her hands on swings for blocks and additional touches. Her ability to stay involved against that volume of attacks made her net defense a notable part of Founders' performance.

[player_tooltip player_id='1060148' first='Sophie' last='Donohue'], a senior setter and right-side hitter for Lincoln County, contributed in several roles against White Pine. In the front row, she showed thoughtful shot selection, including a tip down the line as the defense anticipated a cross-court attack. From the back row, Donohue delivered sets that gave her teammates opportunities to swing. Her defensive positioning and coverage also stood out as she moved into supporting spots and kept balls alive. She got touches on numerous attacks, helping her teammates recover the ball and build another offensive opportunity. Other contacts sent the ball back across the net, requiring Lincoln County to reset its attack. Eldridge also reacted quickly to overpasses, meeting the ball at the net and sending it back into the opposing court.
