Who's Who: The Court Commanders of Florida's Final Four

Part III / Florida Open Division State Championships...Stats provided by Maxpreps 10/30/26

Eight teams entered. Three rounds of pool play tested their determination. Now, only four remain standing in the race to make Florida high school volleyball history. For the first time, the Florida High School Athletic Association has introduced an Open Division, bringing together eight of the state's strongest programs regardless of classification. Divided into two pools, these teams battled through three rounds of competition. Every match presented another opportunity to prove they belonged. Every point carried consequences. And after the final round, Calvary Christian, Plant High School earned their places in the inaugural Final Four.

On Friday, November 6, the spotlight shifts to Polk State College in Winter Haven. Calvary Christian and Winter Park will open the semifinal action at 4 p.m., followed by Orangewood Christian and Plant at 7 p.m. The winners will advance to Saturday's championship, where one program will become Florida's first Open Division state champion.

But reaching this stage takes far more than talent.

Behind every successful program are coaches who have spent countless hours preparing scouting reports, developing strategies, and pushing athletes beyond their comfort zones. There are parents who have rearranged schedules, traveled countless miles, and supported their children through the highs and lows of a demanding season. And then there are the athletes themselves, who have sacrificed free time, battled fatigue, and learned to respond when expectations become heavier. That kind of commitment builds more than a winning record. It develops trust, discipline, and the mental toughness required to survive championship volleyball. And while the attackers often collect the headlines, there are two positions that keep those offensive highlights possible.

The setters and liberos. The quarterbacks and defensive generals. The court commanders.

These athletes see the game differently. Setters must recognize defensive weaknesses, control tempo, and deliver hittable balls even when the first contact falls apart. Liberos have to anticipate attacks, organize serve receive, and keep rallies alive when opponents believe they have already earned the point. They may not always deliver the final swing, but their fingerprints are all over the result.

With history waiting on the other side of the net, meet the eight athletes helping lead Florida's Final Four.

Calvary Christian: The Senior Connection

Noelle Sarigumba | Senior Setter | 1,004 Assists

There is something special about a setter reaching the 1,000-assist mark in a single season. It represents hundreds of decisions, thousands of touches, and countless opportunities created for teammates. For Calvary Christian senior Noelle Sarigumba, that number now stands at an impressive 1,004 assists.

Sarigumba serves as the offensive quarterback, responsible for connecting the first contact to the final attack. Her role demands an understanding of personnel, timing, and what the opposing defense is attempting to take away. A setter must know when to accelerate the offense, when to establish the middle, and when to give a hitter another opportunity after an unsuccessful swing.

More than anything, that position requires trust.

With more than a thousand assists to her credit, Sarigumba's production reflects just how central she has been to Calvary Christian's offensive execution. As the Warriors prepare for Winter Park, the ability to maintain that connection under pressure will be essential. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

[player_tooltip player_id='770408' first='Olivia' last='Badyna'] | Senior Libero | 493 Receptions | 440 Digs | 81 Assists

Behind that offensive production is another senior putting in serious work.

[player_tooltip player_id='770408' first='Olivia' last='Badyna'] has accumulated 493 receptions, 440 digs, and 81 assists, giving Calvary Christian a substantial defensive foundation heading into the semifinals.

Those numbers speak to the volume of responsibility she carries. Nearly 500 serve-receive contacts require concentration, positioning, and the ability to deliver a usable first ball against different serving styles. Add 440 digs, and the picture becomes even more impressive.

Badyna is involved when opponents are trying to disrupt Calvary Christian's rhythm. Whether receiving a tough serve or keeping an aggressive attack off the floor, her job is to give the offense another opportunity.

The 81 assists add another dimension. When the setter takes the first contact, somebody else must step in to keep the play organized. Badyna's contribution in that area demonstrates the importance of a libero who can help extend the offense beyond a perfect passing situation. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Together, Sarigumba and Badyna represent a senior connection built around two of volleyball's most important contacts: the pass and the set.

Winter Park: Defense That Refuses to Fold

[player_tooltip player_id='519260' first='Jordyn' last='Lehman'] | Senior Libero | 590 Digs | 437 Receptions

If there is one number that immediately demands attention, it is 590. That is how many digs Winter Park senior [player_tooltip player_id='519260' first='Jordyn' last='Lehman'] has recorded this season.

Let that sink in.

Nearly 600 times, Lehman has been credited with keeping an opponent's attack from ending the rally. Add 437 receptions, and it becomes clear how heavily Winter Park relies on its senior defensive anchor. Playing libero at this level requires more than quick reflexes. It takes an understanding of attacking tendencies, disciplined positioning, and the willingness to pursue balls that appear destined for the floor. The best defenders are already reading the hitter before contact occurs. Lehman's workload reflects the kind of consistency needed to compete deep into the postseason. And when the pressure rises, those defensive contacts become even more valuable. A dig is not simply a ball kept alive. It is another chance to score. Against Calvary Christian, Winter Park will need that determination on every possession. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

[player_tooltip player_id='770723' first='Flavia' last='Sportelli'] | Junior Setter | 352 Assists

While Lehman works to keep the ball in play, [player_tooltip player_id='770723' first='Flavia' last='Sportelli'] carries the responsibility of turning those opportunities into offense. The Winter Park junior has recorded 352 assists this season, serving as an important link between the Wildcats' defensive efforts and their attacking options. Sportelli's position requires constant decision-making. She must assess the quality of the pass, identify available hitters, and determine which option gives Winter Park the best opportunity to challenge the opposing block. That responsibility becomes even more demanding when the offense is forced away from its preferred rhythm.

A setter cannot afford to panic when the first contact is imperfect. The next decision still has to be made, and teammates must believe the ball is coming in a location where they can make something happen. For Sportelli, the semifinal presents another opportunity to demonstrate that composure. Paired with Lehman's defensive production, Winter Park has two important pieces working to keep its offense connected through difficult rallies. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Orangewood Christian: Protecting the Perfect Pool Record

Three pool-play matches. Three victories. A place in the Final Four. Orangewood Christian has handled every challenge of the inaugural Open Division tournament so far, entering the semifinals as the only team to emerge from pool play undefeated.

[player_tooltip player_id='529340' first='Avery' last='Herman'] | Senior Setter | 467 Assists

At the center of its offensive organization is senior [player_tooltip player_id='529340' first='Avery' last='Herman'], who leads the Rams with 467 assists. Herman's role is about much more than delivering the second contact. The setter is responsible for creating attacking opportunities while preventing the opposing defense from settling into a comfortable pattern. That means understanding rotations, recognizing matchups, and maintaining communication throughout the rally.

With a championship opportunity within reach, the mental demands only increase. Every opponent has studied the Rams. Every defensive scheme is designed to disrupt something Orangewood Christian does well. Herman's responsibility is to help keep the offense functioning when those adjustments arrive. Her team-leading assist total shows the importance of that role throughout the season. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

[player_tooltip player_id='519287' first='Olivia' last='Sosa'] | Junior Libero/DS | 416 Receptions | 294 Digs

While Herman organizes the attack, [player_tooltip player_id='519287' first='Olivia' last='Sosa'] helps provide the defensive stability that allows Orangewood Christian to operate. The junior libero/defensive specialist has collected 416 receptions and 294 digs, showing her involvement in two critical areas of back-row play. Serve receive is often where offensive rhythm begins. A quality pass gives the setter options. A difficult first contact can force the entire team into recovery mode. Sosa's reception total highlights the responsibility she carries in that opening phase. Her digging production adds another layer, reflecting the work required to keep opposing attackers from finishing rallies. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

For Orangewood Christian, the combination of Herman and Sosa gives the Rams an important connection between ball control and offensive opportunity. The program has already navigated pool play without a loss. Now comes the challenge of maintaining that standard when one defeat can end the championship dream.

Plant High School: The Experience Behind the Execution

[player_tooltip player_id='827835' first='Sophia' last='Dostic'] | Senior Setter | 668 Assists

There is an art to controlling a volleyball match without ever delivering the final attack. [player_tooltip player_id='827835' first='Sophia' last='Dostic'] understands that responsibility. The Plant senior has recorded 668 assists, providing the Panthers with an experienced offensive director heading into their semifinal matchup against Orangewood Christian. Dostic brings a particularly interesting element to the setter position: the ability to manipulate timing and create uncertainty for opposing blockers. Her deceptive hands can make it difficult for defenders to identify the intended target early enough to establish a comfortable blocking position. That hesitation matters.

Even a slight delay can create a better attacking window, allowing Plant's hitters to challenge spaces that might otherwise be closed. Dostic's understanding of tempo also becomes valuable when rallies move away from the system. Rather than allowing a difficult first contact to dictate the entire play, an experienced setter can work to restore structure and provide teammates with a manageable opportunity. For Plant, having that level of direction is a significant asset as the Panthers prepare for one of the tournament's toughest challenges. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Ella Horvick | Senior Libero/DS | 218 Receptions | 223 Digs | 58 Assists

Every quarterback needs somebody capable of getting the ball into position. For Plant, Ella Horvick is one of those athletes. The senior libero/defensive specialist has registered 218 receptions, 223 digs, and 58 assists, contributing across multiple phases of the Panthers' backcourt operation. Horvick's value begins with the first contact. Whether handling serve receive or responding to an opposing attack, her responsibility is to keep Plant from surrendering control of the rally. But there is more to the position than simply making contact.

A defender has to understand where teammates are positioned, communicate responsibilities, and recognize when a play requires an immediate adjustment. The ability to remain calm while the ball is moving at full speed is essential. Horvick's 58 assists also reflect her contribution when the offense needs an alternative playmaker. Alongside Dostic, she provides Plant with another senior presence at a stage where experience, communication, and trust can make the difference between advancing and heading home. ~Sophia Jeanpierre @prepdig_fl

Four Teams. Eight Commanders. One Historic Championship.

The stage is set.

Calvary Christian brings a senior connection built around Sarigumba's 1,004 assists and Badyna's tremendous defensive workload. Winter Park counters with Lehman's 590 digs and Sportelli's offensive direction. Orangewood Christian arrives undefeated in pool play, supported by Herman's team-leading distribution and Sosa's back-row production. Plant enters with Dostic's playmaking experience and Horvick's ability to contribute in multiple defensive situations.

Different systems. Different strengths. One shared destination. Yet these eight athletes are only part of the story.

Behind them are teammates who have accepted their roles, coaches who have spent months preparing for moments like these, and families who have supported the journey long before the first postseason serve. The sacrifices are real. Early practices. Late-night film sessions. Long road trips. Injuries, setbacks, and moments when the easiest option would have been to give less. But championship teams do not reach this stage by choosing the easy option.

They arrive because they learn to respond when things become difficult. Because they trust the work. Because they understand that the next point matters more than the last mistake. And for the setters and liberos, that mentality is tested on nearly every rally. They are responsible for maintaining order when everything around them becomes unpredictable. They must communicate through noise, make decisions under pressure, and keep teammates confident when momentum begins moving in the wrong direction. The best court commanders do not wait for the game to settle down. They help create the stability their teams need to compete.

On Friday, November 6, four programs will step onto the court at Polk State College with an opportunity to move one victory closer to Florida high school volleyball history. Only two will advance. Only one will become the state's first Open Division champion.

The pin hitters brought the firepower. The middle blockers challenged everything above the tape. Now, the court commanders have their opportunity to lead the final charge.
