<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I am so excited to have gotten the privilege to talk to some of these coaches about how they're feeling going into the State Tournament as well as looking back on their seasons. I absolutely love doing write-ups about athletes, but I also think there is something really special about getting recognition from other coaches that you've competed against all season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">2A</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Denver- Coached by Phil McFee</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Current Record: 26-14</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Talking with Head Coach Phil McFee:</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We are incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to compete at the state tournament. Our team has worked hard throughout the entire season, overcoming challenges, celebrating successes, and continuously learning along the way. It has been rewarding to see that dedication and perseverance pay off. We are eager to make the most of this experience, continue growing as a team, and embrace every opportunity to learn and improve. Reaching the state tournament is a tremendous accomplishment, especially for such a young team, and we are proud to once again represent our school and community on this stage. We look forward to competing together and making memories from this experience.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I believe there are many things our team has done well this season, but what has made the biggest difference is the way they have come together as a group. Their willingness to play for each other and are committed to the success of the team above individual recognition and to play as a team. Every player has embraced her role, supported her teammates, and stepped up in important moments when the team has needed her. They continue to work hard, learn from every experience, and challenge each other to grow. That sense of unity and selflessness has been a major factor in our growth throughout the season and has helped us become the team we are today. The trust and confidence they have built in one another, from our veteran leaders to our youngest players, has been an incredible process to watch.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. What is your main focus heading into state?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I would say our main focus heading into the state tournament is controlling what we can control and staying true to who we are as a team. We want to play our game, compete at the highest level possible, and trust the work we have put in together throughout the season. Equally as importantly, we want to enjoy every moment of this experience together. Opportunities like this are special and not something every team gets the chance to experience. We are incredibly fortunate to be in this position, and we want to make the most of it by supporting one another, embracing the journey, and creating lasting memories as a team. Regardless of the outcome, our goal is to compete with pride, play for each other, and appreciate the opportunity to represent our school and community on this stage once again.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">4. Is there a different team that you've enjoyed watching this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Honestly, my favorite team to watch has been our own. It has been incredibly rewarding to see how much we have grown throughout the season and how consistently our players have stepped up to support one another. Watching their confidence, teamwork, and resilience develop over time has been one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey. But, if I had to choose another team, I would say Grundy Center. They play with great energy, compete at a very high level, and have clearly put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the season. Their passion for the game and commitment to excellence make them exciting to watch and a team we have a great deal of respect for.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>My favorite team to play so far this season was probably Waverly Shell-Rock. The match was highly competitive and consistently brought out the best in both teams. We always appreciate challenging opponents because those experiences help us grow, test our abilities, and show us what we are capable of as a team.  Waverly Shell-Rock  certainly provided that challenge. They compete at a high level, play with great intensity, and have built a strong program. We have a great deal of respect for their team and coaching staff. So, a special shoutout to their program for the outstanding work they are doing and for helping create such a memorable and competitive match.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It is difficult to single out just one player because every member of this team has stepped up at different important moments and made a significant impact when we needed it most. One of this group's greatest strengths is that contributions come from everyone, and each player has found a way to help our team succeed throughout the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Our captains, Adeana and Mackenzie, may not always receive the recognition they deserve, but their leadership, work ethic, and fierce competition have been invaluable. As leaders of a young team, they set the tone every day and exemplify what it means to compete with confidence and determination and have made a huge impact on this team.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Our middles, Mya and Aubrey, are always working hard. They consistently bring a strong work ethic and team-first mentality. They are always willing to do whatever is needed for the success of the team while continually supporting and encouraging their teammates and finding success themselves.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In the back row, Addie and Lucy have been relentless competitors. Their willingness to fight for every ball, combined with the energy and positivity they bring to the court, has often provided the spark our team needs to keep fighting.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Our pins, Lydia and Ella, have repeatedly risen to the occasion in key moments. They consistently step up when the team needs them most and have delivered on some of our biggest game changing plays throughout the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Finally, I cannot overlook the huge impact of our bench players. They are the ultimate teammates, providing energy, encouragement, and support every step of the way. They help keep us focused, motivated, and engaged, whether they are on the court or cheering from the sidelines. Most importantly, they are always prepared when their number is called and have consistently made positive contributions whenever given the opportunity. Their selflessness and commitment to the team are a major part of what makes this group so special.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">7. If you could shout out one player from another team, who would it be and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I would shout out to my club players on WSR <a href="https://prepdig.com/player/lauren-gade/" data-type="players" data-id="1053868">[player_tooltip player_id='1053868' first='Lauren' last='Gade']</a> and Dawn Meyer-Lillibridge. They are outstanding competitors who consistently perform at a high level and have tremendous understanding of the game. Their volleyball IQ is exceptional, and it is evident that they put in a great deal of work to develop their skills. Beyond their talent on the court, they have always competed with class and sportsmanship whenever we've faced them. Players like that not only elevate their own teams but also make the game better for everyone involved. They have earned a great deal of respect from our program, and it has always been a pleasure competing against them.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">8. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>My favorite part of this group is the trust we have in one another, they are selfless, and have a team-first mentality. We have supported each other through every challenge, we all pick each other up when someone is down, and consistently encourage one another to be our best. No matter the situation, this group is always willing to step up, push each other to grow, and compete together with a shared purpose. Each player puts the success of the group ahead of individual recognition, and that level of maturity is truly remarkable, especially for such a young team. The relationships they have built, the accountability they have for one another, and how they show up each day for each other has made this season incredibly rewarding. Being part of a group that plays for each other and believes in one another so deeply is what makes this team so special.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Aplington-Parkersburg- Coached by Cadance Kleespies</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Current Record: 26-10</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Talking with Head Coach Cadance Kleepspies:</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'm feeling pretty good about our post season play so far. We finally have everyone healthy and feel like we are getting back into a really good groove.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We distribute the ball to our hitters well.  We have a lot of different girls that can put it away and our setters have been doing a great job finding us the best matchups and getting our hitters one on ones.  We also have a lot of senior leadership, along with veteran players that know what it takes to be successful night in and night out.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. What is your main focus heading into state?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Winning the serve and serve receive battle.  Like all the other coaches I'm sure.  We have to be able to serve aggressively.  We also have to be able to put a ball on our setter's head to have all the different options we want offensively.  Continued communication is another one.  When we talk, we move.  We have to stay consistent with that. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">4. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I would definitely say Dike-New Hartford. They are our biggest rival; very disciplined team and we hadn't beaten them in 18 years. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">5. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='763037' first='Adri' last='Allan'] and Kennedy Kalkwarf have been huge for us this year.  Both come back with a lot of experience from past years and have used that to lead our team. They are both very consistent players. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">6. If you could shout out one player from another team, who would it be and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:acf/evaluation-block {"name":"acf/evaluation-block","data":{"player_evaluations_0_player":["894796"],"_player_evaluations_0_player":"field_62ab9d62ecf2c","player_evaluations_0_override_profile_image":"","_player_evaluations_0_override_profile_image":"override-player-profile-image","player_evaluations_0_not_in_database":"","_player_evaluations_0_not_in_database":"field_62aba48cecf2d","player_evaluations":1,"_player_evaluations":"field_62aba7547dc44"},"alignText":"left","anchor":"acf-block-6ae53215ea839"} --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"placeholder":"Add evaluation here...","className":"text-gray-700"} --> <p class="text-gray-700">"I would have to say [player_tooltip player_id='894796' first='Ruby' last='Varney'] from Dike New-Hartford, the girl is a beast!  She covers more back row than any player we have ever played against. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This is one of the tightest nit groups that we have ever had. They play for each other. They are each other's biggest fans. We are deep this year; we have had many girls step up with injuries and get it done for us. They have stepped up in some really big games. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">1A</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ankeny Christian- Coached by Michele Quick</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Current Record: 38-2</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Talking with Head Coach Michele Quick:</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We are very excited about qualifying for state, the team has worked very hard this season and competed with some tough teams to prepare for the postseason and state.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I would have to say the team's connection with each other the chemistry, trust, and belief in each other has been a key factor in the success so far this season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. What is your main focus heading into state?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We study our opponents, learn their systems and how we can respond to their offense. We are working on our tempo to our hitters as well as aggressive serving and good receiving placement.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">4. Is there a different team that you've enjoyed watching this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>We enjoy watching all of the teams we have played throughout the season, and excited about several of them qualifying for state as well!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Grundy Center was a very exciting match for us, our defense was solid and that was a big early win for us, but our entire season was sprinkled with good opponents and we enjoy all the higher level competition.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Katelyn Weathers-she is an amazing libero, I think she can see what's about to happen before the other team knows, she is an incredible defender, very vocal, and holds the team accountable. She is very confident and in control which helps the team know she is there for them.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">7. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This is special because of their heart and commitment to trusting in God and the gifts that he has given them which is much more than just physical ability-kindness, positivity, belief and support for each other, selfless mannerism. There are so many favorite moments through the season and so many more to come at state, i'd say my favorite is their laughter and confidence in each other!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Boyden-Hull- Coached by Justine Draayer</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Current Record: 24-11</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Talking with Head Coach Justine Draayer:</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">1. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I think we've done well with our commiment to improving our game and putting the team first. We started the season with 11 healthy athletes 9th-12th. We graduated 5 seniors last year and only 2 freshmen joined the team. Many of our girls are new to varsity or playing a new position that is outside of their primary one. When players are willing to make that sacrifice you can feel the commitment and dedication that they have to the team.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">3. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?</h4> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Big crowds and competitive teams are always my favorites to play. I'm a competitor at heart and love the battle. Our NICL has that nearly every night of conference play. I believe that's what has helped many us prepare for our postseason journeys. We are used to that type of competition and environment. Outside of our conference, our regional final with North Cedar has that energy. It's how you envision the environment for a regional final. Williamsburg was also a lot of fun to play as well. They play hard and both sides that day were taking big swings and digging well. Ankeny Christian was awesome to play as well, our 3rd set finished 19-21.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">6. Wapsie Valley does and has had some standouts but our program has always competed as a team and shared the love with each other. That is something I love about our program. Without everyone doing their thing we would not be able to win. Pacyn‘s serve and consistency in the game, Kyra and Keirra's massive blocks and ability to intimidate the other teams offense, Georgia's smashes and all around energy, McKenna's hustle and desire to be great, Ari's want and will to play and be the best setter/teammate, Kaitlynn‘s ability to step in and give us great serves and calmness, and Brynn B's ability to show up big in tight situations, and Brynn S just being a team player and cheering on the girls trying to stay rock solid in that back row. We wouldn't be who we are without everyone. We are a well oiled machine and we win because we aren't depending on one person…EVERYONE plays a key roll on our team!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":4} --> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">7. I am so excited to have gotten the privilege to talk to some of these coaches about how they're feeling going into the State Tournament as well as looking back on their seasons. I absolutely love doing write-ups about athletes, but I also think there is something really special about getting recognition from other coaches that you've competed against all season.

Denver- Coached by Phil McFee

Current Record: 26-14

Talking with Head Coach Phil McFee:

1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?

We are incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to compete at the state tournament. We look forward to competing together and making memories from this experience.

2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?

I believe there are many things our team has done well this season, but what has made the biggest difference is the way they have come together as a group. The trust and confidence they have built in one another, from our veteran leaders to our youngest players, has been an incredible process to watch.

3. What is your main focus heading into state?

I would say our main focus heading into the state tournament is controlling what we can control and staying true to who we are as a team. Regardless of the outcome, our goal is to compete with pride, play for each other, and appreciate the opportunity to represent our school and community on this stage once again.

4. Is there a different team that you've enjoyed watching this season and why?

Honestly, my favorite team to watch has been our own. Their passion for the game and commitment to excellence make them exciting to watch and a team we have a great deal of respect for.

5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?

My favorite team to play so far this season was probably Waverly Shell-Rock. So, a special shoutout to their program for the outstanding work they are doing and for helping create such a memorable and competitive match.

6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?

It is difficult to single out just one player because every member of this team has stepped up at different important moments and made a significant impact when we needed it most. One of this group's greatest strengths is that contributions come from everyone, and each player has found a way to help our team succeed throughout the season.

·         Our captains, Adeana and Mackenzie, may not always receive the recognition they deserve, but their leadership, work ethic, and fierce competition have been invaluable. As leaders of a young team, they set the tone every day and exemplify what it means to compete with confidence and determination and have made a huge impact on this team.

·         Our middles, Mya and Aubrey, are always working hard. They consistently bring a strong work ethic and team-first mentality. They are always willing to do whatever is needed for the success of the team while continually supporting and encouraging their teammates and finding success themselves.

·         In the back row, Addie and Lucy have been relentless competitors. Their willingness to fight for every ball, combined with the energy and positivity they bring to the court, has often provided the spark our team needs to keep fighting.

·         Our pins, Lydia and Ella, have repeatedly risen to the occasion in key moments. They consistently step up when the team needs them most and have delivered on some of our biggest game changing plays throughout the season.

·         Finally, I cannot overlook the huge impact of our bench players. Their selflessness and commitment to the team are a major part of what makes this group so special.

7. If you could shout out one player from another team, who would it be and why?

I would shout out to my club players on WSR Lauren Gade Lauren Gade Lauren Gade 5'10" | OH Waverly-Shell Rock | 2027 IA and Dawn Meyer-Lillibridge. They have earned a great deal of respect from our program, and it has always been a pleasure competing against them.

8. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

My favorite part of this group is the trust we have in one another, they are selfless, and have a team-first mentality. Being part of a group that plays for each other and believes in one another so deeply is what makes this team so special.

Aplington-Parkersburg- Coached by Cadance Kleespies

Current Record: 26-10

Talking with Head Coach Cadance Kleepspies:

1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?

I'm feeling pretty good about our post season play so far. We finally have everyone healthy and feel like we are getting back into a really good groove.

2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?

We distribute the ball to our hitters well.  We have a lot of different girls that can put it away and our setters have been doing a great job finding us the best matchups and getting our hitters one on ones.  We also have a lot of senior leadership, along with veteran players that know what it takes to be successful night in and night out.

3. What is your main focus heading into state?

Winning the serve and serve receive battle.  Like all the other coaches I'm sure.  We have to be able to serve aggressively.  We also have to be able to put a ball on our setter's head to have all the different options we want offensively.  Continued communication is another one.  When we talk, we move.  We have to stay consistent with that.

4. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?

I would definitely say Dike-New Hartford. They are our biggest rival; very disciplined team and we hadn't beaten them in 18 years.

5. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?

Adri Allan Adri Allan Adri Allan 5'9" | OH/DS/L Aplington-Parkersburg | 2027 State IA and Kennedy Kalkwarf have been huge for us this year.  Both come back with a lot of experience from past years and have used that to lead our team. They are both very consistent players.

7. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

This is one of the tightest nit groups that we have ever had. They play for each other. They are each other's biggest fans. We are deep this year; we have had many girls step up with injuries and get it done for us. They have stepped up in some really big games.

Katelyn Weathers-she is an amazing libero, I think she can see what's about to happen before the other team knows, she is an incredible defender, very vocal, and holds the team accountable. She is very confident and in control which helps the team know she is there for them.

8. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

This is special because of their heart and commitment to trusting in God and the gifts that he has given them which is much more than just physical ability-kindness, positivity, belief and support for each other, selfless mannerism. There are so many favorite moments through the season and so many more to come at state, i'd say my favorite is their laughter and confidence in each other!

A few of my favorite things from this group is their willingness to work hard and have fun at the same time. This team has great team camaraderie and a desire to compete at a high level. They love to be challenged in the game of volleyball and they have their sights set high for this week!

Wapsie Valley- Coached by Austin Shepherd

Current Record: 28-13

Talking with Head Coach Austin Shepherd:

1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?

I'm super excited for this squad. These Warriors have been challenged and faced different obstacles over the season but they've committed to the process. I believe as a team we are playing some of our best volleyball at the right time.

2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?

I think we've done well with our commiment to improving our game and putting the team first. We started the season with 11 healthy athletes 9th-12th. We graduated 5 seniors last year and only 2 freshmen joined the team. Many of our girls are new to varsity or playing a new position that is outside of their primary one. When players are willing to make that sacrifice you can feel the commitment and dedication that they have to the team.

3. What is your main focus heading into state?

Our main focus is to compete and do it with joy. There is a reason each player is out for the sport and at that foundation is a love for the game. Play for each other and the young girl who fell in love with the sport.

4. Is there a team that you've enjoyed watching this season, and why?

I haven't really been able to just watch a team to have a favorite. For me, seeing the growth from our own athletes and team is my favorite. Especially when they break through new barriers and ceilings that they didn't imagine.

5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?

Big crowds and competitive teams are always my favorites to play. Ankeny Christian was awesome to play as well, our 3rd set finished 19-21.

6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?

That is really tough to pick just one. Wapsie Valley does and has had some standouts but our program has always competed as a team and shared the love with each other. That is something I love about our program. Our bench + managers play a big role as well and deserve a shoutout for the time and energy they bring to the team.

7. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

The closeness these girls have with each other on and off the court. They play for each other and don't want disappoint their teammates. The sacrifices of playing a new position for what the team needs is something incredible about these young ladies. They have a lot of trust with each other to take the risk but that comes with a lot of support that they provide one another.

West Monona- Coached by Alisha Faith

Current Record: 25-8

Talking with Head Coach Alisha Faith:

1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?

We are all very excited. Making it to state is always the dream goal, but has always been just out of reach with us usually losing in Round 3 of the regional tournament. Making it to the tournament is pretty surreal and we are all just soaking it in.

2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?

They have learned how to grow together. We have four returning starters and everyone else is new to varsity level play. They all found themselves in new roles and they all gave each other the grace to learn those roles by supporting each other. There were some growing pains, but they worked through it together and have started to really trust each other on the court.

3. What is your main focus heading into state?

Stay focused on the point in front of us. Nothing hits the floor without effort.

4. Is there a team that you've enjoyed watching this season, and why?

I know it's not high school, but I've loved watching Nebraska Volleyball because they are so dynamic and fun to watch! They definitely set an amazing example for the girls that want to play at the highest levels.

5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?

Bancroft-Rosalie was a great game for us. B-R has a very solid team. It was a reverse sweep for us coming out winning the last 3 sets of a 5-set battle. This was the first time we saw our team come together and battle for every single point. This was the first moment they realized they can do hard things by never giving up together.

6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?

I have no idea who to pick for that, we have so many key components there's literally no way we can just pick one person. We are a well oiled machine and we win because we aren't depending on one person…EVERYONE plays a key roll on our team!

8. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

They have such positivity on and off the court. They all genuinely celebrate and care for each other. One teammates success is everyone's success and it shows on the court.

Dunkerton- Coached by Brittany Weidman

Current Record: 25-11

Talking with Head Coach Brittany Weidman:

1. How are you feeling about the postseason and going into the state tournament?

As a coach I am feeling extremely proud of the girls. To not only be a part of Dunkerton's first state appearance last year, but to be able to have our team return for back-to-back appearances (especially after taking the huge losses we took with the departure of last year's senior class) is incredible. It's a testament to the passion these current girls have for the game and for the goals they set! We feel good about where we are currently as a team both in play and culturally so I think we're ready to go up there and do what we can do.

2. What has your team done well this season that's gotten them to this point?

We have done well at not plateauing and continually growing as a group. The girls have from start to finish, improved little by little in different areas on and off the court. We also excel with tough serving and touch offensive play - which has helped us in this return to state.

3. What is your main focus heading into state?

Enjoy the moment and continue to represent Dunkerton as a competitive team in the toughest volleyball areas of the state!

4. Is there a team that you've enjoyed watching this season, and why?

Definitely Union. They are tough, very well trained fundamentally and have a passionate group of girls year after year.

5. Who was your favorite team to play this season and why?

We love playing Cedar Ridge Christian and Janseville. Being tough programs to play makes the games fun - but also being conference rivals, there is always that extra emphasis on the importance of those matches!

6. If you could shout out one player from your team, who would it be and why?

I would have to shout out Mariah Boeschen. Her growth throughout this year has been amazing to watch. Being a player who never has varsity time, to being the starting setter - it was alot of pressure. She has taken feedback from coaches and teammates throughout the year and is a way different setter now than when we started. She is approaching 900 assists in one season which is a huge mark and we couldn't be more proud of her. Great kid on and off the court.

8. What makes this group so special, and what is your favorite thing about this team?

My favorite part of this group and what makes them so special, is their ability to hold each other accountable. In practice and in games, they hold each other to a standard at all times. That's allowed them to bring us to a place not many people outside of the Dunkerton Raider gym thought we would be this year - which is back up at the state tourmament and amoungst the best teams in 1A!
