More than 150 college coaches shared this article. Join PrepDig with 30% off using code "digdakotas30."

Follow on Instagram@prepdigdakotas

This is my first time covering the Phoenix Festival Championship, and it doesn't take long to figure out why so many people talk this event up. You can feel the competition from the first games of the day. There is talent on every court, good teams in every pool, and a high level of execution in each match.

But it's the tiny margin of error that impresses me the most. Teams have to earn points through long rallies, disciplined defense, balanced offenses, and the ability to make in-match adjustments. The athletes who get noticed aren't always the ones with the most extreme swings. These are the players who stay cool, fight for every point, and keep contributing when the standard of play rises.

Some players keep showing up in my notebook, moving from court to court. Some are pace-setters. Some get it. Some entirely change the momentum of a match with their defense, their serve receive, or their ability to deliver in key moments. Here are the athletes who stand out for me on Day 1, hitting the ground running.

One of the more complete offensive performances I saw on Day 1 belonged to [player_tooltip player_id='571996' first='Naomi' last='Deckard']. What struck me wasn't so much the points she scored. It was the way she got them. She seemed never to look at the block the same way twice. One swing was deep across. The next one found the line. Then she turned around and used her hands. That made her tough to defend against, as blockers couldn't get into a rhythm.

The other thing I kept noticing was how fast she reloaded in transition. She didn't like her old swing. She was already set for the next attack, keeping her involved in the offense from the first rally to the last. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Audrianna Bernard played like a hitter who trusted what she'd been taught. Her approach and her arm swing were without hesitation. She saw an opening, and she attacked it.

I thought she did a nice job manipulating the block rather than trying to manhandle it. That's a stat-sheet skill that doesn't always show up, but it does when offenses keep scoring against disciplined defenses. She played with confidence, but it was a controlled confidence, and I thought that was what separated her throughout the day. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

One thing that kept coming back to me with confidence was how much pressure she put on the defense, even without a perfect set. Some hitters are dangerous when they're in a rhythm. When the offense wasn't great, Lizzy found ways to stayin the mixl.

She kept working through the transition, stayed available, and kept pushing blockers to make tough decisions. That is the kind of consistency that is offensive and becomes valuable as tournaments wear on. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1000042' first='Ema' last='Harris'] looked relaxed, letting the game come to her. I never got the sense she was going for offense. Instead, she relied on her eyes, relied on her setter, and took quality swings when the chances came.

What struck one was the efficiency of her scoring. She identified where the block was robbing space and adjusted without attempting to force low-percentage shots. That's a mature part of her game that kept coming up throughout the day on Day 1. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

The outside hitter position requires players to do a little bit of everything, and Rylee Villano took on that responsibility all day long. She didn't have much downtime. One point she's steadying serve and receive. Then she's hitting a hard-driven ball. A couple of seconds later, she is all in on the approach to the left pin.

The one thing I noticed most was that none of those responsibilities carried over into the next match. She was balanced throughout the match and that consistency helped her team maintain the rhythm. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Brylie Booth brought an attacking mentality that didn't really change with the score. I thought she did an impressive job being aggressive but also being smart with the ball. Not every hitter has that balance.

What really stood out was that she never seemed comfortable against blockers. She kept attacking with conviction, kept making adjustments throughout matches, and forced defenses to stay engaged every time the ball was coming her way. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Thank you to all my readers for making this journey possible.
