It was one of the first team camps in Nebraska at the high school level. This was a good opportunity for teams to start to see where their pieces fit into the puzzle as the season begins in exactly one month from today, on August 10th.
I watched most of the pool play games in Walz and a few matches in the field house. Here are some teams that I took notice of and could turn some heads this fall because of their improvement or their play today during pool play. Here is Part 1:
David City Scouts: Wow, I was really impressed with their level of play during pool play this morning. They ended pool play 8-0. They made the top bracket tourney and dropped a three set thriller to Seward. They are athletic and have some really good hitters that have long levers. The Scouts have a ton of experience back at key positions. They have a ton of energy and their chemistry was really good on the court. Class of 2021 #41 ranked 6’0″ OH Lauren Vandenberg Lauren Vandenberg 6'0" | MB David City | 2021 State NE who plays for VCN 17 Elite played extremely well this morning. As a 2nd team All-SNC pick, the junior had 297 kills, 32 blocks, 235 kills and 28 aces for the Scouts last year. Lauren did a really great job of transitioning and can jump out of the gym. She has a quick arm swing and hit spots all over the court against her opponents. Look for her to have a great senior season. Maya Couch will be a force for the Scouts too. She is a 6’0 senior middle who was an honorable mention SNC pick last year. Couch had 173 kills last fall for the Scouts.
Grand Island High Islanders: Under new head coach Marcus Ehrke I thought the Islanders setter did a great job of distributing the ball. As a team they had really good energy on and off the court. The bench players were cheering as loud as the players on the floor. They also got into a really great long rally in the 11:00 am match with Fullerton where both teams were digging machines. Grand Island won the point with a great middle tip behind the blocker.
Freeman Falcons: The Falcons have a good volleyball tradition and they did a great job of talking on the floor and transitioned well. Their setter Brooklyn Ideus Brooklyn Ideus 5'10" | S Freeman | 2021 State NE who is the #86 ranked players in the Class of 2021 did a great job of distributing the ball. She is a lean and long lefty setter. She gives good energy and really mixed up her short and deep jump serves. She has a really great short serve that she got some aces off of today. Ideus had 633 set assists last year to go along with 140 digs and chipped in 23 aces.
