Which Pin Hitters Surprised Us at Bellevue West Invite?

Early-season surprises are a fall staple.   We could compile a long list of reasons why we get so excited about the start of a new high school campaign. There's a special layer of pageantry and mystique that you can only get from the prep scene. But aside from this fall "aura," we're also eager to see which players are ready to make a big jump and change our perspective on the state's top talent.   And the Bellevue West Invite is a perfect venue to exhibit that growth. We were treated to some exceptional volleyball from Nebraska's elite contenders last weekend. A host of new-look lineups gave us plenty of players to scout, and we were bound to find some breakout performers. Many of those ran the show on the pins.   So, let's peruse a few pleasant surprises from the Week 1 tournament showdown in the Omaha metro.    Morris' development continues to draw headlines. We have fond memories of her early pin-hitting days as a Millard West underclassman. Now, she's a true veteran who can set the tone in any rotation. The Bellevue West Invite gave us all the pinpoint passing we'd expect from Morris, but she also took a ton of attacking volume in her frontcourt rotations. This expanding role will be fascinating to follow as the Wildcats seek a postseason return.     Koziol is far more than a ball control asset in the Millard South lineup. This multi-talented athlete has made her mark as a passer and defender in the Nebraska Juniors gym, but we also saw Koziol's right arm take command last weekend. She gets off the floor quickly and is particularly adept at working off high hands on the left side. Koziol's senior leadership will be vital for this revamped Patriots team.     The Bellevue West Invite was a big test of how well Swenson would mesh with her Thunderbird crew. Early results have landed her in our coverage spotlight. Some of Swenson's best moments have come on the Prep Dig Circuit, where her all-around skills were a perfect fit for our showcase environment. But Swenson's performance at last weekend's invite rivaled those outings. She chiseled off physical blocks and wasn't afraid to challenge open seams in the frontcourt. Bellevue West needs that fearless attitude for the Class A gauntlet.     Buechler has accomplished a lot during her club tenure with Club Legacy, and those experiences are quickly translating to prep success. She was a go-to opposite during 16 Alpha's rise to double qualification during the spring season. Buechler's sharp crosscourt shots scored against the nation's best, so this junior won't be shy about sparring with Nebraska's powerhouses. Bennington's move to Class A will further sharpen that mettle.     We already knew Callahan was a six-rotation force, but she now looks like a focal point of Omaha Skutt Catholic's future success. She dished out some of the most assertive crosscourt swings in the gym on Saturday morning. Her intensity during bracket play reminded us of so many other decorated athletes from Skutt Catholic's Class B reign. Callahan is staking her claim as the next great SkyHawk pin hitter, and Week 1 was a brilliant start.     Sure, we were acquainted with O'Connell's high-flying firepower on either pin. She was an immediate star at last year's Nebraska Freshman Showcase and put up impressive numbers in her freshman debut with Marian. But O'Connell has also taken a step forward through her willingness to mix up routes in first-ball situations. We watched this electrifying sophomore tee off on the '2' ball last weekend, making her infinitely more difficult to defend. The scouting report has expanded.     Elkhorn South is no stranger to agile, explosive pin hitters who aren't afraid to get crafty to find their kills. Thomalla is ready to uphold that tradition. She could negate any length disadvantages at the net with her strong, whippy arm and tremendous range. Thomalla has stood out in the Premier Nebraska gym for making savvy out-of-system plays, and we got another dose of that creativity at the Bellevue West Invite.     Welcome to the big stage, Class of 2030. It's fair to say that Liebsack's prep career is off to a roaring start after helping Elkhorn North earn the Bellevue West Invite title. She slotted into one of the team's left-side attacker positions and delivered indefensible heat throughout the event. Liebsack's imposing length was also the ideal complement to a technically sound Elkhorn North block. She can bear any burden at the net, and Liebsack is just getting started.     Tally another one for the freshman camp. Being a freshman left-side hitter at the varsity level can be daunting, especially while competing against big-city powerhouses on opening weekend. However, Beeder proved she could carry a spot in the starting rotation with her stacked Lincoln Standing Bear team. Aside from flourishing as a terminal weapon, Beeder is agile enough to make some incredibly impactful defensive plays as an off-blocker. Her court vision went beyond the standard fare for a freshman.
