Senior Captains: Leaving a Legacy

For seniors, the final high school season carries a little more weight. There are only so many practices left, so many matches, and so many opportunities to put on their school jersey before that chapter comes to a close. For senior captains, that final season also comes with the responsibility of helping shape what their program will look like long after they leave it.   Leadership isn't always measured in kills, assists, digs, or wins. Sometimes, the biggest impact a captain can make is in the standards they set, the confidence they instill in younger teammates, and the culture they help create inside the gym. The best leaders leave behind something that the next group can continue to build upon, regardless of a big or small school.   We caught up with senior captains from across Arizona to hear what legacy means to them, how they hope to lead throughout their final season, and what they want their teammates and programs to remember when their high school careers come to an end.   These seniors have one season left to make their mark—but the impact they're hoping to leave behind could last far beyond it.    For Kristin Sheehy, leadership has come full circle. As a freshman, she had the opportunity to be part of a state championship team, surrounded by upperclassmen who showed her firsthand what leadership and hard work looked like. Now a senior herself, Sheehy hopes to provide that same example for the younger players coming behind her.   “The upperclassmen that year worked so incredibly hard every single practice and were able to become role models for us underclassmen,” Sheehy said. That experience helped shape the player and leader she wanted to become and showed her just how much influence older teammates can have on a program's next generation.   The biggest lesson Sheehy hopes to pass down is to use your voice. In a sport built around communication, she wants younger athletes to have the confidence to speak up, share what they see, and understand that their perspective has value. “Don't be afraid to speak up, say something when you notice it, and share your perspective,” she said. “You may be able to notice something that no one else does.”   For Sheehy, that voice extends beyond the volleyball court. She hopes the players following her learn to communicate with the people around them, trust what they have to contribute, and use their voice as a guide toward success—just as the leaders before her helped her find her own.     As one of Arizona's top players, [player_tooltip player_id='603194' first='Pulelehua' last='Laikona'] could easily define her legacy by what she has accomplished on the court. Instead, as she finishes her senior year at a smaller-school program, Laikona is focused much more on the people around her and what she can leave behind for the players who come next.   “To me, legacy isn't about the records, awards, or stats I leave behind,” Laikona said. “It's about the memories I made and the people I was lucky enough to impact along the way.” She hopes she's remembered not only for the player she was, but as a teammate who cared deeply, gave her best, and made others feel like they belonged.   That responsibility has taken on an even greater meaning as a captain. Laikona knows leadership sometimes requires showing up for others even when you aren't at your best. “There are moments when you're tired, frustrated, or having a bad day, but you still have to show up for your team and be someone they can lean on,” she said. “Sometimes leadership means putting your own feelings aside just to remind someone else that they're capable.”   For Laikona, that's ultimately what she hopes remains after her final match. She wants the younger players in her program to inherit a culture where everyone feels supported and knows they have a place. Volleyball may have given her plenty of individual success, but she wants her legacy to be a reminder that the game is about much more than winning. It's about “the friendships, the memories, and the people you grow with along the way.”     For [player_tooltip player_id='827567' first='Olivia' last='Kauffman'], leaving a legacy at Horizon means continuing a standard that has made the program one of Arizona's most competitive. Championships and accomplishments may be part of her high school story, but Kauffman hopes her impact is ultimately measured by the younger players who follow her.   “To me, leaving a legacy means a lot more than any kind of ring or championship,” Kauffman said. “I want to be remembered as someone who worked hard and always encouraged others.” As a captain, she takes seriously the responsibility of being someone every player feels comfortable turning to, whether they need help with volleyball or something completely outside of the game.   Kauffman's own high school career has given her a firsthand look at what makes Horizon special. One of her favorite memories came during her sophomore season when Horizon defeated Mater Dei to win the Nike Tournament of Champions. Competing alongside and against high-level players showed her just how much fun there is in embracing big moments and competing at the highest level.   Now, she wants to make sure that competitive culture continues after she graduates. “If I could leave behind a culture full of young girls who work hard, trust each other, and play for the love of the game when no one is watching, I know that I have done my job.” For Kauffman, developing and supporting the next generation is how the Horizon standard continues—and how her impact can extend far beyond her senior season.     At Phoenix Country Day School, winning is a tradition. The Eagles have established themselves as one of the premier programs at the 2A level, with multiple state championships to show for it. But for senior captain [player_tooltip player_id='826562' first='Jodie' last='Jones'], continuing that legacy is about more than adding another trophy to the collection. She wants to leave behind a program defined just as much by its relationships and culture as its success.   “A legacy isn't solely determined by the number of awards, titles, or wins, but by the people you inspire, the relationships you build, and the exciting culture you leave behind,” Jones said. She hopes her teammates remember the friendships, laughs, difficult practices, and everything in between just as much as they remember what happened on game day.   Jones also has a thoughtful perspective on what it means to wear the captain title. Leadership, to her, isn't always about being the person taking charge. It's knowing when to listen, when to accept feedback, and even when to step aside so someone else can find their voice. “At the end of the day, the title is just a title,” she said. “You're still a player, a teammate, and someone who has to show up for the people around you.”   That's especially important in the example she sets for PCDS's younger players. Jones wants them to hold themselves accountable and become teammates others can depend on, but she also wants them to discover their own way of leading—and have fun doing it. She hopes the little things that have made the Eagles feel like a family continue, from conversations in the locker room to simply checking in with one another around school. For Jones, leaving PCDS more connected than she found it would mean just as much as anything the Eagles accomplish on the court.     For [player_tooltip player_id='735664' first='Isla' last='Little'] at Basha, the legacy she hopes to leave behind has nothing to do with wins, statistics, or awards. As she enters her senior season, she wants her impact to be felt through the culture she helped create and the way she made the people around her feel.   “I want to leave a lasting impact by creating a positive and supportive culture where everyone feels encouraged to grow and succeed,” Little said. “It's about building strong relationships, teaching resilience, and inspiring others to believe in themselves.” To Little, being a captain also means embracing the parts of leadership that people don't always see. Whether it's checking on a teammate who is struggling or helping resolve small disagreements before they grow, she understands that some of a captain's most important work happens behind the scenes.   She especially hopes the younger players in the program learn from the example this senior class sets. Little wants them to see what it looks like to work hard, stay dedicated, handle both success and failure, and continue being a great teammate through it all. Most importantly, she wants them to remember that one mistake will never define them as a player.   And when it comes to the message she hopes stays with the next generation, Little brings it back to something simple: don't lose the joy of playing. “Just have fun and be confident, and don't let anyone take their joy and happiness away from the sport they love,” she said. “Coming to practice every day is a blessing, not a chore, because there is someone out there that wishes to be in your position.”   For Little, leaving a legacy means walking away knowing she gave her best every day—and leaving the program a little better than she found it.     For [player_tooltip player_id='520375' first='Fara' last='Bronson'], leaving a legacy at Casteel High School means being remembered for far more than what she accomplished on the court. As she enters her senior season, she hopes the impression she leaves is one of authenticity, leadership, and pride in the program she has helped represent.   “To me, legacy means the positive impression that you leave behind,” Bronon said. “As a senior, I want to leave a long-lasting impact on the program and be remembered as an authentic leader on and off the court.” Some of that leadership happens away from the spotlight, particularly through the constant communication she maintains with Casteel's coaches and athletic staff—something she believes has helped keep the program thriving.   Bronon has already been part of a historic chapter for the Colts. Helping lead Casteel to the 6A state semifinals, the furthest the program has advanced in school history, was a moment she says helped shape her into the leader she is today. But some of the memories she hopes live on are much simpler, including the team's tradition of dancing together in the team room before home matches. “It brings the team unity and cohesiveness before big games,” she said.   For the younger players who will eventually take over the program, Bronon hopes they understand the responsibility that comes with representing Casteel. “Be genuine and personable. Carry your head high, and represent yourself well because it's a privilege to be a part of such a great program.” It's a mindset Bronon hopes to embody throughout her final season and ultimately leave behind for the next generation of Colts.     For [player_tooltip player_id='936972' first='Addie' last='Muller'] at Sunrise Mountain, the legacy she hopes to leave is centered around creating a program that feels like much more than a team. She wants every player to feel valued, supported, and like they truly belong. “If I can help build a team that feels like a family and leaves players with friendships and memories that last beyond high school, then I'll know I made an impact,” Muller said.   As a captain, Muller also wants Sunrise Mountain's younger players to see that leadership can take many different forms. It isn't always about being the loudest voice in the gym. Sometimes, it's simply showing up consistently, working hard, encouraging the people around you, and putting the team first. She also hopes they recognize that while volleyball may be a huge part of their lives, the sport doesn't define who they are outside of it.   But when they do step onto the court, Muller wants them to do it with confidence. “You don't have to be the tallest, the fastest, or the strongest person in the room to be the best,” she said. “Play like you are 6'0 and have the mentality that you are the best. Confidence is key.” It's a message Muller hopes the next generation carries with them as they eventually step forward to lead the Sunrise Mountain program.     For [player_tooltip player_id='1021418' first='Layla' last='Ulsh'] at Desert Mountain, the message she hopes to leave with the younger players in the program is a simple one: enjoy it while you can. As her own high school career begins to wind down, Ulsh has gained a new appreciation for just how quickly the seasons pass.   “Live it up. You won't be in high school forever, and soon enough you'll be graduating,” Ulsh said. “You can't play volleyball forever, and if you love it half as much as I do, that will kill you.”   It's a perspective that comes from someone who isn't quite ready for this chapter to end. Rather than allowing younger players to get caught up in the difficult practices, pressure, or small frustrations that come with a season, Ulsh hopes they recognize how special the opportunity is while they're still living it.   “I would give anything to get just one more season, so just enjoy it while you can.”   For Ulsh, that may be one of the most meaningful lessons she can leave behind at Desert Mountain: appreciate the practices, teammates, matches, and memories along the way, because four years go by much faster than you think.     For [player_tooltip player_id='879925' first='Macy' last='McLaughlin'], being part of Hamilton Volleyball means representing a program with high expectations. As she prepares to finish her senior season, she hopes the players coming behind her continue to embrace those expectations and keep Hamilton among Arizona's powerhouse programs.   “When I graduate, I hope Hamilton volleyball can continue to be a powerhouse in high school volleyball and that the athletes hold themselves to the highest standards on and off the court,” McLaughlin said. For her, continuing the program's success means understanding that the standard extends beyond what happens during a match.   But as important as competing and maintaining that tradition are, McLaughlin also wants the younger Huskies to appreciate the experience while they're living it. Her message to them is to “lean on each other, not take anything for granted, and cherish all the time they have.”   For McLaughlin, that's the legacy she hopes to leave behind: continue raising the standard, rely on the people beside you, and never lose sight of how special the opportunity is while you have it.    <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   The school season is just getting started, and we can't wait to continue following Arizona athletes and programs throughout the fall!
