The first impressions keep rolling in.

Perhaps you caught Part 1 of this feature series. It takes an exceptional athlete to make a varsity impact as a freshman, but the high school season always delivers a handful of athletes who defy expectations. This fall's campaign is our big introduction to the Class of 2030, no matter how limited that scope may be. Luckily, we already have a whole host of first-year players making moves with Nebraska's top prep powerhouses.

So, we're marching on to Part 2.

We're starting on the big-city scene with a first-year star we noticed at the Bellevue West Invite. Kerns helped the Mustangs break into the event's championship bracket, finding various ways to make an impact on the left side. We were initially drawn to Kerns' tremendous length and high contact point, but she also displayed a defensive repertoire on opening weekend. Kerns racked up double-digit digs against Waverly and also had a productive outing against Gretna in the bracket opener. Millard North has a veteran cast to lead its resurgence, but don't discount the team's underclassman influence.

Expect plenty of small-town representation in this feature. Wright leads us off after compiling a team-leading kill total through Chambers-Wheeler Central's first few matches. Her 17-kill performance in a three-set bout with Stuart was particularly stark, and Wright could see even more volume as the season progresses. CWC loves to run Wright on the '2' ball, which lets her exploit any angle in the middle of the net. This is another example of a pin-middle hybrid that is poised to dominate on Nebraska's rural circuit.

Beatrice has given us plenty of underclassman stars to follow over the past several years. Gronewold is keeping the tradition alive after racking up over three kills per set in this year's season opener against Crete. She was similarly impactful in Beatrice's first win over Plattsmouth, notching 14 kills in straight sets. Gronewold may be a newcomer, but her knack for finding unconventional ways to score is akin to a steely veteran.

We'll keep harping on the prevalence of multi-position standouts among Nebraska's small-town powerhouses. Loeffelbein could have an ever-evolving impact throughout her career with Palmer High, but she's already proving her worth regardless of role. She has dished out six assists per set through the Tigers' first handful of matches, earning victories over Nebraska Lutheran and Newman Grove/St. Edward. Loeffelbein can also take assertive swings as a frontcourt opposite, giving plenty of options for Palmer's starting rotation.

Let's give Newman Grove/St. Edward another mention. The Panthers return many of last year's standouts, but adding Patzel to the mix changes the dynamic considerably. This multi-sport star leads NGSE with 4.2 digs per set, highlighted by massive performances against Harvard and Fullerton. Becoming a defensive anchor can be daunting for any freshman, but Patzel has already taken the initiative to step in front of fellow passers and make everyone's job easier.

It's been a while since we checked on Wilcox-Hildreth, and Guthrie is giving us ample reason to fix that. She averaged over seven assists per set through the Falcons' first three matches and catalyzed sweeps over Sumner-Eddyville-Miller and Hi-Line. Her distribution is only part of the narrative, as Guthrie commands the right-back area well to keep Wilcox-Hildreth in marathon rallies. Her off-blocker work has also added defensive value in the ever-gritty playstyle of Class D2.

This won't be the last we see of Fehlhafer. The Utica native is building off a productive club outing with VCNebraska 14 Black, so she already has high-level experience on the national circuit. That has translated to instant success with her prep crew, yielding over five digs per set to sit atop Nebraska's freshman leaderboards. These numbers are simply eye-popping. A 30-dig performance in three sets against Wilber-Clatonia is an easy way to land on our coverage radar. Of course, Fehlhafer's intangible skills go beyond anything we can see in a box score, and we can't wait to cover her progress on the club scene, too.

The first impressions keep rolling in.
