Tigers Show Nation Their Teeth at Durango Classic

The Harrisburg Tigers arrived in Las Vegas as the tenth-ranked program in the country and one of the more compelling stories in the entire Durango Fall Classic field. The four-time defending South Dakota Class AA state champions came to the desert carrying a 27-match winning streak and 95 consecutive victories over Class AA opponents, a run of dominance that head coach Ronette Costain has built into one of the most sustained programs in the history of high school volleyball anywhere in the country. Making the trip from Harrisburg, South Dakota to compete against sixteen of the top twenty-five programs in the nation was itself a statement of competitive intent and what the Tigers showed over two days in Las Vegas justified every mile of it.

Pool play on Friday was a demonstration of exactly why this program has been impossible to dislodge at the top of South Dakota volleyball for four consecutive seasons. The Tigers opened against Buchanan, a California program that does not give points away easily, and edged them in a pair of competitive sets 26-24 and 25-14 in a result that showed both the quality of Harrisburg's preparation and the resolve to close out tight sets when the pressure builds. The second match tested them further. Lone Peak High School from Highland, Utah brought five consecutive state championships and a roster full of athletes to the pool and Harrisburg answered in a match that went 25-22 and 25-23 in sets that could have gone either way down the stretch. Josalyn Samuels, the Nebraska commit and Prep Dig's fourth-ranked overall prospect in the class of 2028, was at her best in those tight moments, distributing the offense with the composure of a player who has already competed at the international level and knows how to manage a game when the margin for error disappears. The pool closed with a 25-12 and 25-19 sweep of Shadow Ridge from Las Vegas, giving the Tigers a perfect pool record and a path to the championship bracket on Saturday.

Day two brought 'Iolani from Honolulu, a Hawaii powerhouse with deep national tournament experience and athletes who match up physically with anyone in the field. The match was a genuine test that the Tigers ultimately could not close, falling 22-25 and 20-25 in a result that ended their run at the championship bracket but did nothing to diminish what they accomplished in Las Vegas. Going 3-0 through pool play against a Durango field that included Lone Peak, Buchanan, and Shadow Ridge before facing a nationally competitive Hawaii program on day two is a resume that travels well from South Dakota.

The nucleus of what Harrisburg brought to the floor throughout the tournament was clear to anyone who watched them compete. Samuels ran the offense with the kind of intelligence and tempo manipulation that has made her one of the most recruited setters in the 2028 class nationally, averaging 10.8 assists per set entering Las Vegas while hitting .444 from the back row. Her ability to create one-on-one situations for her hitters out of a system that demands consistent passing is what makes this offense so difficult to defend. Sophomore Julia Masselink leads the team at 4.5 kills per set and brought the same athleticism and arm speed to the Durango floor that she has shown all season long. As I watched them play, she was routinely the main weapon they were looking for to score in big moments. Senior Bergen Stiff provided efficient attacking production alongside Masselink with a .377 hitting percentage entering the tournament, while senior middle McKinnley Munce anchored the blocking game with 20 total blocks and 13 aces on the season. Senior libero Kennedy Kokenge organized the back row with 4.5 digs per set and 100 receptions, giving the Tigers a defensive foundation that held up throughout the competitive demands of the Durango environment.

A program that wins 95 consecutive matches over in-state competition and then travels across the country to compete against the nation's best is the definition of a program that takes its standard seriously. The Harrisburg Tigers return to South Dakota with Durango experience that will help them down the rest of the season.. The rest of South Dakota volleyball is on notice.

As always stay tuned for more articles on your favorite athletes. If you have anyone you think we should watch out for, please shoot me an email with some info at Michael@prepdig.com. You can also DM me in Instagram and X by searching @CoachMikeDZ. Also don't forget to help these kids get more exposure by sharing our stories with your friends. Help us help them by simply reposting on X or sharing on Facebook. Thanks for following us, Prep Dig Family! Don't be afraid to interact with us. We love the likes, shares, and quotes/comments. Keep them coming!
