It's been a while since we've summoned this small-town motif. Let's catch up.

Hitting all of Kansas' postseason storylines will be a daunting task. This weekend will feature a three-day sprint at four different sites, from Kansas City to Hutchinson to Salina to Emporia. It's a lot to take in, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

And, like my native Nebraska, rural stars have helped form the foundation of Kansas' prep volleyball landscape. Athletes from every corner and locale of the Sunflower State have proven their worthiness for the spotlight, and there's no time like the state tournament for these gems to converge.

We have some names in mind after the championship field was pared down to eight teams per class. The group of title contenders narrowed after Saturday's sub-state slate, but the list of names to know remains vast.

It's the perfect way to cap off an exceptional career. Thomas More Prep reached the Class 2A quarterfinals after securing a pair of sub-state sweeps, and Rebel anchored the end line throughout. In fact, she's been carrying that role for a few years. Rebel is one of Kansas' most productive 2027 liberos, with just shy of 2,000 career digs heading into this weekend's outing in Salina. She makes well-placed tip shots look like free balls for her transition offense, and her passing has been just as helpful to the TMP cause. Enjoy this final reminder of Rebel's long-reaching impact on the Kansas prep scene.

We've been overdue for a check-in with Central Christian, the Hutchinson squad with ample firepower to make noise in the Class 1A-DII race. Huff has added to the onslaught, upping her average to nearly three kills per set as a junior. She takes long, winding approaches in the middle and often fools opposing blockers with her late releases. Huff's deceptiveness has grown as she becomes more comfortable on the slide in two-hitter rotations. Look for this multi-faceted production as Huff and Central Christian travel to Emporia.

The undefeated Eagles have clearly given us no shortage of terminal stars to discuss. We last featured Ritchie as she prepared for Year 3 with the reigning Class 2A champs. Now that we have a full regular season on the docket, this hard-hitting attacker clearly hasn't skipped a beat. In fact, Ritchie has brought her best while hitting for a staggering 0.491 attacking percentage this year. This junior has the unique task of teeing off on '2' tempo balls in the middle, and it's a worthy scoring strategy more often than not.

We can get used to seeing this outside hitter patrolling the Heart of America Region for a while. Rhodes announced her pledge to College of the Ozarks before the start of this fall's campaign, keeping her talents close to home. Of course, unfinished business remains with Hesston High, the No. 4 seed in Class 3A's hierarchy. Rhodes has amassed nearly three kills per set as a newly minted upperclassman, averaging a career-best 0.311 hitting percentage despite all this volume. Her breakout season could get even better this weekend.

This multi-talented athlete has remained on an upward trend since we saw her at last December's Prep Dig Exposure Tour event in Kansas City. She has been an indispensable part of Beloit's ultra-efficient offense, compiling three kills per set on a lofty 0.370 clip. But Channell's influence has been apparent in phases beyond these terminal contacts. The sophomore has also dished out a blistering serve for the Trojans while also leading the squad with 3.2 digs per set. It's a full six-rotation effort from one of the most versatile prospects in Kansas' Class of 2029. The journey continues in Class 3A pool play.

We last featured Cavenee as we discussed some sophomores due for a big surge in 2026. This Greeley County terminator has delivered on the hype. She boasts 3.6 kills per set this year, tripling her freshman output with the Jackrabbits. Cavenee's meteoric rise provided the final boost for Greeley County to take down Wallace County and Western Plains in the sub-state round. That 31-kill performance in the season opener was merely a sign of things to come.

How about a freshman leading the scoring chart for a state quarterfinalist? Bonner led this year's Tigers with 2.8 kills per set as St. John-Hudson swiped the final spot in the 1A-DI field. She made an immediate impact every time she rotated into the frontcourt and exhibited more shot variety than you'd expect from a first-year player. Her squad may be viewed as underdogs in Salina this weekend, but Bonner could provide the fearless attitude that freshmen are often known for.
