The two-day tournament will feature 97 teams playing across three club venues in the Houston area – Willowbrook, Houston Skyline and Woodlands Revolution.
The 16s teams will all play on Saturday while the 17s and 18s, which are paired in a single division, will see the court on Sunday. We are planning to cover the 16 Division in person and bring you our lists of reports the following week, so as we prepare for the event, we’re publishing some previews for the 17/18 Division over the week.
In our opening article, we’ll present the top players of the strong Asics Willowbrook 17 Gold, the top 17s team from the Willowbrook club in Northwest Houston.
Players to Watch:
Emily Schaper Emily Schaper 6'1" | OH Cy Woods | 2023 State TX – Outside Hitter – HS: Cypress Woods – 2023
A long and athletic outside hitter with an excellent all-around game, Emily Schaper Emily Schaper 6'1" | OH Cy Woods | 2023 State TX adds a lot to Willowbrook 17 Gold in several areas of the game. She joined the club this season coming from the Houston Skyline and has proved to be a great addition as a player who gets things done at the net while also providing excellent stability on the backcourt. A 6’1” prospect, Schaper has made it to last year’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom List. She is fresh from a high school season in which she produced 222 kills, 47 aces, 22 blocks, 323 digs and 401 passes with Cypress Woods after undergoing knee surgery and ranks 87th in our 2023 Prep Dig State Rankings.
Allana Archie – Middle Blocker – HS: Spring – 2023
Willowbrook 17 Gold has tremendous depth at the middle blocker position and Allana Archie’s presence is one of the reasons the team is so solid at the net. The 6’2” middle blocker has a lot of firepower with her combination of quick feet and a heavy arm and uses it to be extremely prolific at the net. She’s also a very good blocker with her superior reading of the game and aggressive hands placement. Archie was one of the top players of her team Spring during the last high school season, registering 256 kills, 67 aces and 53 blocks.
Kylie Mueller Kylie Mueller 6'0" | OH Dulles | 2023 State TX – Outside Hitter/Opposite – HS: Ford Bend Dulles – 2023
Kylie Mueller Kylie Mueller 6'0" | OH Dulles | 2023 State TX is a player with the ability to carry any team’s offense. She doesn’t need to that with Willowbrook 17 Gold as the team has quite a few elite offensive players, but her scoring ability continue to be a tremendous asset. One of the things that make of the six-foot Mueller an excellent hitter besides her power is her ability to hit from anywhere at the net and to convert any type of set. Her backcourt game is also very solid and is good enough to allow her to play as a defensive specialist. Another member of this team to have made it to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom List in 2021, Mueller has tallied 405 kills, 452 digs, 558 passes, 35 blocks and 30 aces during the last high school season for Dulles. She ranks 54th in our 2023 Prep Dig State Rankings.
