I can’t talk about top liberos without talking about Lily Lily Beckman | 2025 IA Shields of Wisconsin Ice 18 National. This Ice team has been one to watch for years with a solid core group where Shields is a definite leader. She commands the backrow, she is connecting with all of her teammates, and controls the game with the first contact whether it is with her first contact or bringing calm to the chaos. After a successful career at Newman Catholic out of Wausau, she will take her talents to Winona State where this program has had plenty of success with Wisconsin preps.

She was a 1st Team All State performer this past fall where she can do a little bit of everything for her team. She is a gritty defender and she can also put up a great ball for her attackers to terminate. The intangibles of how she can generate momentum for her team is what sets her apart.

Lily will always impress me with her play. Her volleyball IQ is at the next level, and she uses it in everything she does. She sets and swings for Newman but is an elite defender as well. In fact, she led her team in digs and assists. She also had some sneaky setter dumps that resulted in kills. Lily is smart, energetic, and very athletic. She fought on every point and was essential in this semifinal matchup today.

Shields is a true swiss army knife for Newman Catholic. But this is a staple for a small school like Newman in order to be successful. She creates great angles in serve receive and moves the ball around quickly as the setter. Shields knows just when to call her own number and when she is in the front row she hits from the pins. She’s got this tricky roll show down the line or snags the deep cross court corner. I don’t think there is an open spot on the court that is safe from Shields.

What a scrappy athlete. Lily Lily Beckman | 2025 IA Shields preps at Newman Catholic out of Wausau, WI where they were the D4 state runner up finishers in 2023 and will be looking for a big finish in 2024. Shields can play any position, but she will be heading to the next level as a defensive specialist/libero. Her ability to serve receive at a high level is what sets her apart. She has great anticipation and footwork which allows her platform to do the work. Winona State is another program who has done well with Wisconsin athletes in their program. Graduate Senior Sydney Paulsen out of West Bend West and Milwaukee Sting has had a huge career as a Warrior.

Lily could be the definition of a player with a grit factor. She is an incredibly talented setter and passer and can easily switch between setter and libero roles. Lily will make a full effort in every single play. She makes some jaw-dropping impressive plays when needed but also has great fundamentals and ball control. Lily is impressive in everything she does and seems to have infinite fight and grit.

Shields has been a key factor for Wisconsin Ice and Newman Catholic in their state championship run in 2023. She is a 5’4 dynamo that can do it all but really what you need to know is that she is a positive leader. Shields will lead the charge in a defensive pursuit of the ball and she will put serious pressure on from the service line. She can be seen play a number of roles including setter and taking swings but her primary position for recruiting is as a defender where she is relentless with the 1st contact.
