Ella Koenen has always been a swiss army knife type player where she can set and attack. This past high school season, she was one of the top setters from the junior class, leading Slinger to the sectional final. She will take her talents to Illinois State, who is on the rise in the Missouri Valley Conference, always playing a rugged non-conference schedule as well. They have Wisconsin natives in Aida Shadewald (Sauk Prairie) and Olivia Baierl (Howards Grove).

I can still remember Kohnen making this stellar hustle play at the Prep Dig Gauntlet this past spring. She sprinted after a ball to keep it alive and dives into the court partition. Then she runs back to the front row to get set and makes a roll shot for the kill. She is just an explosive and super athletic player that knows how to make big plays.

Kohnen is about 5’8 but she knows how to play so much bigger. She is driven and can move the ball around with a quick tempo to either pin. Kohnen does a great job bettering the ball and using her awareness of the court and who’s on it. She can set against the flow, call her own number, and find the hot hitter with ease.

Kohnen was hustling all over the floor! First I saw her dive past the endline to save a stray ball and then she got up and sprinted back to the net to put up a block. The very next set goes to her on the right side where she uses a crafty roll shot for the kill and point.

She is a leader on the court and can run a 5-1 offense. Ella is disciplined on the court and runs a fast offense. She spreads her sets around and keeps all of her hitters involved.
